Story
When Indian American journalist Smita returns to India to write the story of a young widow Meena and the murder of her husband, it’s Smita’s first time back since her family left when she was a child. Both Smita and Meena were raised in a culture where a woman exercising a basic human right - the right to love and marry whoever she chooses - is met with brutal punishment. While Meena’s fate hangs in the balance, Smita must reckon with the privilege that becoming an American has given her, as well as face the trauma that shaped her as a child and led to her family leaving.

Story
Two teenagers, a Greek Cypriot and a Turkish Cypriot, meet at a taverna on the island they both call home. In the taverna, hidden beneath garlands of garlic, chili peppers and creeping honeysuckle, Kostas and Defne grow in their forbidden love for each other. A fig tree stretches through a cavity in the roof, and this tree bears witness to their hushed, happy meetings and eventually, to their silent, surreptitious departures. The tree is there when war breaks out, when the capital is reduced to ashes and rubble, and when the teenagers vanish.

Publisher's Summary
A Reese Witherspoon x Hello Sunshine Book Club Pick
FORECAST: Storm clouds are on the horizon in L.A. Weather, a fun, fast-paced novel of a Mexican-American family from the author of the #1 Los Angeles Times bestseller Esperanza’s Box of Saints
L.A. is parched, dry as a bone, and all Oscar, the weather-obsessed patriarch of the Alvarado family, desperately wants is a little rain. He’s harboring a costly secret that distracts him from everything else. His wife, Keila, desperate for a life with a little more intimacy and a little less Weather Channel, feels she has no choice but to end their marriage. Their three daughters - Claudia, a television chef with a hard-hearted attitude; Olivia, a successful architect who suffers from gentrification guilt; and Patricia, a social media wizard who has an uncanny knack for connecting with audiences but not with her lovers - are blindsided and left questioning everything they know. Each will have to take a critical look at her own relationships and make some tough decisions along the way.
With quick-wit and humor, Maria Amparo Escandón follows the Alvarado family as they wrestle with impending evacuations, secrets, deception, and betrayal, and their toughest decision yet: whether to stick together or burn it all down.
A Macmillan Audio production from Flatiron Books
"A rollicking and hilarious family drama...One of the most endearing L.A. novels in recent memory." (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

Family, Drama, Weather
This book is a little too long for me at times but is overall a good book to discuss and analyze. The gentrification almost reminds me of colonization. Forgive my ignorance but I actually did not know that a California was once under Mexican rule. There are many metaphors, especially with broken toys and Felix running over a toy. I saw metaphors connecting the weather to things such as colonialism and the forest fires seem to represent the Alvarado family moving further away from one another.
Likes/ Loves
- Patricia Alvarado is my favourite. She is a social media influencer that seems to have the caring and loving nature.
- I like that all Alvarado sisters have completely different personalities.
- I love that despite everything, their dinners bring the Alvarado family together.
- I like the Jewish and Catholic mix/ upbringing and history of the family.
It is a well written book and it impresses me that María Amparo Escandón was able to write so beautifully in English. I could not imagine being brave enough to write something in another language. During Reese’s virtual book club meet Maria was very open and candid about her family life which I absolutely love.

DNF and wanted to return this book!
I wanted to love this book. As a native Californian Latina, I was thrilled that Reese selected this book. But unfortunately I couldn't connect with the characters, the arc of this story, any of it. I've never written a negative review before and I have over 200 tittles on audible, but I was so disappointed in this book. So many of the free stories on audible have been so much better.

Gets Political and ruins the book
I was really happy with this book it was a great family story. Struggles, love, confidence issues. Then I got to Chapter 12 and it went political and it was uncalled for and not needed to carry the plotline. This book would if been so much better if they took out all the unnecessary political BS. If I wanted a political book I would have picked up one and if this was a book advertised as a political story I would have skipped it because the political writing was terrible.

Confusing and Aimless
I’ll start with a positive, the narrator has a very soothing voice and her accent when she pronounces Spanish words is beautiful. She does a great job!
The story, however, is just so confusing and aimless. I couldn’t connect with, understand, or respect any of the main characters. It was not believable to me that three successful, intelligent women would seriously move back in with their parents and be comfortable being “sister mommies”. It felt like the author was trying to address every topical social and political issue into one story, and the political commentary, especially, was so pointless and unnecessary. The characters lack depth and many of the story lines just fall flat. Skip this one if you’re considering reading it!

Very good story, but…
I enjoyed the story very much but for me when a story goes to saving the environment and buying solar farms to save the world, a story feels a little preachy to me. And so turned me off a little bit. That’s just me.

Family Drama
This book, set in 2016, is about family, and how hard it is to keep things together.
A lot of this story made me think of a soap opera, just not as dramatic. The family struggles to keep from falling apart during LA's worst drought to date. People lied, people were selfish, and communication was constantly ignored.
While the wild fires grew close, so did the ultimate struggles they had been keeping from each other.
This was definitely not my type of book as it is 90% character driven, but the writing is beautiful and still managed to keep my attention.
For the story, it's a 3⭐, since it's not my cup of tea, but the delivery of this story is 4.5⭐. Beautifully done.
