Publisher's Summary

Life is not easy for the poor relations of England’s upper crust, but fate and clever schemes bring them together. Lady Fortescue and Colonel Sandhurst hatch a plan: What if they were to transform her decrepit Bond Street home into a posh hotel, offering their guests the pleasure of being waited upon by nobility? With the help of other down-and-out aristocrats, they do just that, and London’s newest hotel, The Poor Relation, is born.

The establishment is an immediate hit with London’s most illustrious citizens, save the Duke of Rowcester, Lady Fortescue’s nephew. Rowcester believes that his aunt’s entry into the trade will denigrate their family name and is determined to shut the hotel down - until he meets Miss Harriett James, the lovely young woman who accepts Lady Fortescue’s offer to become The Poor Relation’s chef after the death of her parents and the loss of her fortune. Rowcester moves into The Poor Relation for the season - ostensibly to keep an eye on his aunt’s business.

Such a great story! Ms. Davina Porter brought life to the characters, so much so that I giggled…at the ‘mannew in which one uppew cwass chawactew spoke’!

Fun listen

As a friend referred to it, this is a cozy regency romance that is fun to listen to. I was most amused at how scandalized some of the characters were about another taking a bath.

A bright little Regency era story.

I loved this simple, lively little book and Davina Porter's narration is spot on. She made the Regency era come alive. I am looking forward to the entire series.

Love the story and the excellent narration!

I am so glad I came upon this series! I laughed so much, felt so many emotions as each main character joined the story with their respective struggles with poverty and loneliness. Instead of meekly accepting their lot in life, they banded together and collectively and boldly started a hotel business. I love their diverse characters and common emotional vulnerability. I feel sad with them, excited and elated with them. Davina Porter’s narration made the story so much more enchanting!
