Story
A lot had changed in "The Holy Sky" School during the six weeks that Hadjar Darkhan was away. Everyone who was in the capital at the time became much stronger, thanks to the regular skirmishes along the Imperial road. By the emperor's decree, all the disciples of the Imperial martial arts schools were allowed to visit the infamous and highly coveted Wastelands. "The Holy Sky's" disciples were especially fortunate - they'd been given a two-week head start to find the map leading to Emperor Decater's tomb, as well as the key that would allow them to enter his chambers.

He left behind the Northern Kingdoms, tired of their wars and schemes. The golden waves of the Sea of Sand didn't drown him in fire, but the Evening Stars ultimately didn't bless him with their light. Finally, Hadjar Darkhan and his friend, Einen the Islander, reached the capital of the Darnassus Empire - Dahanatan.

Story
His indestructible will cracked, his advance that no army could've stopped faltered, his sword, raised against the gods themselves, was brought low . . . Who was he? Where was he going? The Ruby Mountains were right in front of him, and his path was clear, but his very soul had been plunged into utter darkness. Will Hadjar be able to find a way out? Will he be able to come back to the light? Or will the endless abyss devour him? His dragon heart was beating slower and slower . . .

Becoming the Hero of the Dragon Lands isn't easy. You have to survive a ruthless tournament. However, even after his victory, one he'd earned with sweat and blood, Hadjar's deadly adventure had just begun. His duty is to escort the dragon Princess to the Ruby Mountains, the dwarves' homeland. But the wreath isn't what it appears to be. And the path that leads to the mountains runs through the Red Mist Lands, place only a chosen few could survive.

Story
In the first book, Hadjar lost it all. His body ruined, parents dead, and his title of Prince replaced by a slave collar. It seemed like Primus had deprived him of everything. But no one can take away a man's will to fight. Even if his heart turns into a bleeding stone due to endless grief and suffering, it won't matter. The most important thing was that he still had the will to go on. The thought of taking revenge on his family's murderers gave him the strength to survive.

Publisher's Summary
His name is Hadjar Darkhan, and he still follows the call of his dragon heart.
The War Games ended a few months ago, and the various generals of Darnassus, led by the emperor, realized that just the disciples of the best martial arts schools and even the smaller, lesser schools wouldn't be able to strengthen the Darnassian Army enough to prepare it for what was coming. A war was on the horizon, and every weapon would matter, so losing even the most inexperienced warriors was an unthinkable prospect.
The Empire had never prepared for battle on such a massive scale before. They'd gathered tens of thousands of Spirit Knights and hundreds of thousands of Heaven Soldiers in just a short time. But would that be enough to combat the countless hordes of the enemy? Or were these just the death throes of a once vast Empire?
Hadjar, whether he wanted to or not, would be part of this upcoming war. Moreover, his role might end up being far more significant than he'd originally assumed.
Before a decisive battle begins, he must plunge into a maelstrom of war preparations, which doesn't bode well for him....

Best Book 2021
If you haven't realized already, this is easily one of the greatest books of this year and a series that will make you question the talent of other authors. If you are looking to be just entertained for a while, this series isn't for you.
If you are looking to dive in to a world as complex as our own and character progression the likes of which is rare, you have found your next obsession. No pointless deaths, unnecessary sex, two dimensional characters, and skip worthy chapters.
For a lot of people, especially the ones who project modern culture onto fictional worlds, this is a brutal and unforgiving story that seems to just want you to be upset.
However, if you can let go of your biases and modern sensibilities and simply let your mind and heart be embraced by a magnificent adventure you won't look back with regret but look forward with excitement for the next chapter.

love the series, but not my #1. still great though
Really enjoying this series. It continues to have a great story line, with unique support characters and an enjoyable path for the MC. I hope that Kevin Collins stays the narrator of this series as he's done such a great job so far. I do wish the opposition characters had a little more variety in the "I'm mad, let's fight" voices. The "lower your voice and yell" voice that's associated with everyone makes it tough in larger fights. It would nice to hear more variety. That said, I'm certain none of us can really understand how difficult narration is and I hope Collins continues to be the narrator of this and many other series.
** I admit I'm doing a copy/paste on this series. I didn't review them when I listened to them but felt these books deserved a review.

I have been able to put these books down. Klevanski really out did himself this time. The training flashbacks were amazing. My only complaint is the lack of detail continuation when Hijra was thrown into the pool with female disciples. Please keep the books coming; I’m hooked.

Book 9 is great.
I believe the negative reviews are by wannabes or over educated stiffs who correct people's grammar because they can. Only one issue with Audio version of book 9 and only saying this in case book 10 is similar... Please add a note like "Storm Mountain 6 months ago..." it was a lot of reminds to catch up on Hadjars location in time and space. Thanks for all the hours of great listening.
