Publisher's Summary

With Paul Noble’s simple, relaxed approach you will learn in a way that suits you – without having to memorise long lists of words you won’t use, scribbling notes as you listen, or feeling frustrated. Instead, Paul will introduce you to the basics of the German language and guide you through over 12 hours of everyday scenarios – from simple situations like asking for directions and eating out to talking about yourself and how to master the different tenses – that are practical, fun, and applicable. Just listen, interact, and learn wherever you are.

Whatever your experience with languages, whether you’re an absolute beginner or someone with basic knowledge who wants to improve their ability, this is the course to get you speaking German quickly, confidently, and with no chance of failure.

A native-speaking German expert will help you to perfect your pronunciation as you progress through the course. You will learn a huge range of vocabulary in no time at all, and be able to quickly make your new knowledge work for you in a variety of everyday scenarios. A downloadable booklet is also included to use as a reference and revision tool.

Paul Noble left school unable to speak a language – having found that the traditional learning methods left him feeling ‘confused, incapable and unable to really say anything’. Determined that there must be a better way to learn, Paul spent years devising his own unique method of learning languages which cuts out all the grammar, all the memorisation, and all the stress. He began using his method to teach in his Language Institute and, thousands of students later, he prides himself on never having had a student fail.

This download contains the entire course – Parts 1, 2, and 3. To continue your language learning journey once you’ve completed this course, download Next Steps in German with Paul Noble for Intermediate Learners – Complete Course.

Good idea but bad execution

Initially I was super excited about this as the guy who introduces it is very clear and the concept sounds great. However, then they introduced the German speaker who you need to mimic and she is terrible. Not clear at all. Not sure why they decided to use her voice. I am sure it sounds great in person but for someone who wants to learn German her voice does not clearly sound out all the words properly. Its like torture to me because I think this could have been an amazing product otherwise.

Easy step-by-step method

Since I lived for a year in Vienna this material is not new to me. I like though the no-memorization approach based on frequent and random recall . I know from sad experience that native German speakers tend to sometimes "swallow" their endings - unfortunately the native speaker on this recording is no exception. The word "links" (left) is at first pronounced as "linns", with the "k" so soft, that it is practically absent. More seriously the "e" in "einen" is absent and "ein" differs from "einen" only by a slightly longer "n".This is no good in teaching environment, no matter how authentic it is. Warning for North American listeners: Mr Noble speaks with British accent omitting his "r"s, also the vocabulary is British ( "Car Park" for "Parking" etc). Those little issues notwithstanding it is a good course - recommended.

Begin from a right place to learn German

To some, the book might appear tedious at the beginning because Paul likes to go through the same words, word groups and examples over and over again but it pays off in the end. One of the hardest things to grasp in German, is how cases, certain prepositions and situations change artikles of nouns. Der becomes den or dem, die becomes der all the while the gender (a grammatical cathegory) stays the same! In this audiocourse, Mr Noble has masterfully shown these transitions without going into difficult grammar rules. You understand it how it is. Also, I especially liked parts where he explains the similarities in German and Enhlish, the consonant swaps, subtle differences in saying the same thing e.g. German way of asking the price "Was kostet es?", literally what costs it?
I recommend it to all A levels!

Fantastic Intro to German

I am being relocated to Germany for work and only had a couple of months to prepare. I've tried duolingo and a few other resources but without a doubt, this book taught me the most. Listening while working out and walking to work naturally had me absorbing the language. Even after finishing the book I go back and listen to refresh, this will be a resource I listen to for a long time.

Most important part is squeezed in the last part

Very nice and easy to follow... A bit too basic for a "complete course" though. If you're starting German from complete scratch, it's definetly a great starting point

Easy to follow

This method is unique as it teaches German language based on English. the instructor is very eloquent and the German speaker Katrina is really the best in the course as she speaks clearly and very easy to follow.

Highly Recommend

This is an excellent supplementary asset to learning German. The book does a great job of utilizing spaced repetition while also teaching vocabulary and (some) grammar. I highly recommend this book if you're learning German. I've already bought the next book.

Here are some recommendations for Paul and their team:
- The last chapter is probably the most important and unfortunately, it's too rushed. Even if I immediately knew the sentence that was to be repeated, I'd get cut off frequently.
- Names of chapters would be fantastic. That way I could easily go back to a topic that I'd like to practice.

First review worth making

I never in my life have been able to finish a language book that I purchase. This one is the first exception ever, and I think that Paul Noble is one of the best language course creators out there. I loved how Paul was able to break everything into digestible pieces. About to go use a credit on the next book.

Exceedingly helpful!

I learned so much from this course! It helped fill in some of the blanks I had when doing the Duolingo German course. Mr. Noble's way of teaching definitely worked for me. I have purchased the next book in his Learn German series and can't wait to start learning even more!

Best Teacher I have found

I have tried memrise, rosetta stone, and several other ways for learning German. All have some positives, but I found Paul Noble's approach to be the best for me. I am middle-aged and though I love the immersive experiences the others have, sometimes I just need somebody to explain why instead of waiting for me to figure out the pattern. He explains "rules" like you were used to in grammar class growing up and the gives you a lot of practice in practical, but non-boring ways. Plus you gotta love his British accent. He is very encouraging too....

I loved learning German from Paul Noble!

I really loved learning German from Paul Noble. It's a jump-start, no-nonsense way to learn German. Rather than bogging down in verb conjugation like many formal language classes, Paul starts with the basics. "Ich, Ich kann, Ich kann beginnen." You learn how to say basic things about yourself, order food and drink, get a hotel room, and find directions. Paul also does a great job of comparing English words with German words, and explaining how German grammar is more similar to King James English grammar than modern English grammar.

I have two complaints about this book though: First, you never learn spelling. Speaking German one thing, but as soon as you start to read it, you realize you have mostly no idea to spell anything you just learned. Second, I had a very hard time catching the differences between many similar-sounding words. Paul and the German lady both used dynamic microphones, so they didn't get the crystal-clear dictation from a condenser microphone, which is critical to people learning a new language. That also added to my spelling frustrations. It was hard to parse when to use den mann vs dem mann, because they sounded exactly the same through the recording. Also trying to learn "excuse me" was a mess - I left thinking "enshoilitten zie? emshoiligen zie?" when the correct word is "entschuldigen sie."

I also didn't get a great lesson from the numbers and alphabet, but I've since learned them from children's YouTube videos.

EDIT: This book now comes with an accompanying PDF to teach you how to spell. Great!

If only schools taught like this

I had never studied German before listening to this audiobook, I was quite sceptical to what a few hours of lectures could do but I am truly impressed. I can now grasp the gist of several discussions and can communicate basic sentences.

Good introductory material

It structures how the logic of German language works in plain way. However it does not introduce a lot of new words. If you expect to speak German after this, then you will not be able to do so, however of you expect to learn the logic behind the language this is perfect.

amazing

I have been trying to learn german, for years. this course not only teaches you what to say, it explains why it should be said, that way. Your not just memorizing key phrases, your learning how to formulate your own thoughts into a proper German sentence. I absolutely loved this course.

without a doubt. the best way to a new language

If you think that learning a new language is "too hard", "too complicated" or "too overwhelming." you're wrong. After buying Paul's course. I am absolutely confident that I can not only learn a second language. but its also possible to learn a 3rd, 4th or even 5th language. simple, well produced and it works.

Agonizingly slow

Paul talks to the listener as though we were all five-year-olds. He repeats himself over and over and over, speaks sooooo slowly, wastes insanely long periods of time explaining mundane concepts over and over and over and over again. If I listen for 20 minutes on my way to work I might learn one new word. The rest of the time I am listening to Paul explain something fairly obvious in the slowest way possibly ten times in a row, and repeating things from the first lesson for the thousandth time. It’s infuriating!
