amazing book, it's a beautiful story of horror and resilience, and weaves history with magical realism - though I hesitate to even call it magical realism for risk of minimizing the spirits and what they mean to the story. this is the first novel by Ward that I've become familiar with, and I'll absolutely be seeking out more from this author. I love hearing authors read their own stories, and her performance is stellar.
