Publisher's Summary
A client savagely kills a man to protect a friend. A lawyer with secrets must prove it was justified.
Attorney Nate Shepherd left a big firm to go out on his own. He sees nothing but opportunity when an out-of-town lawyer wants to hire him as local counsel on a high-profile murder case. Though his family worries that the case hits too close to home, Nate joins the defense team.
When circumstances force him to take on a bigger role, Nate ignores his family’s fears and throws himself into his client’s defense. But as he digs deeper, every aspect of the case raises memories of a terrible event that Nate has tried his best to bury.
Battling an aggressive prosecutor in court and a dogged reporter outside it, Nate fights to prove that his client’s brutal, bloody slaying of an evil victim was right. But when Nate’s own story is exposed, it threatens his client’s freedom...and Nate’s carefully constructed life. Can he fend off his own demons long enough to save his client?
This is the first book in the gripping Nate Shepherd Legal Thriller series. If you like razor-sharp dialogue, iron-willed characters, and slippery moral quandaries, then you’ll love this fierce courtroom drama.

Was great
Good balance between relatable characters and entertaining lives. Not too much suspense where you want to read spoilers ahead of time, but just the right pace needed to do laundry and dishes. Will be buying the next book for sure.

So-So
Narrator was entirely too flippant, which took away any sense of depth to the main character. Good enough story though.

Intriguing from beginning to end!!
My first Michael Stagg read, I’m hooked, captivating legal thriller from beginning to end. Narrator George Newbern is the best I’ve heard to date, amazing!

Aaah, a true legal thriller!
I love the courtroom drama! Performance is not quite up to a Grisham audiobook level but still, I am anticipating the next book in the series. Long may Nate practice law.

Good courtroom story that takes place in a small town. Well written and easy book to listen to.

Excellent “read”!
I was fully engaged with the story. I love a good mystery. Never quite sure eat was next. I guess I’ll have to look into more books by this author.

Outstanding legal thriller
An unwinnable first degree murder case falls into the lap of a civil law attorney. He is forced to defend a man who readily admits he killed someone who he believed was going to hurt his friend. Author Michael Stagg writes a great legal story that is realistic and credible. Protagonist Nate Shepherd is likeable without being overly heroic. George Newbern does a fine job of narrating. I just purchased the next two audio books in the Nate Shepherd series.

Fantastic
I don't leave reviews very often, mainly because I'm right on to my next book. I'm leaving a review for Lethal Defense, because it was riveting. I was hooked from chapter one and it never slowed down. The narration was epic, the characters superb and the story was enthralling. I'm so looking forward to the next book in this series!

Spectacular
This new series was a fantastic find! Just found this author while looking for books narrated by George Newbern. I liked it very much and listened to the whole book in only a few nights. The writing flowed well, and the characters were excellent. The author makes the book interesting while throwing in just the right amount of humor. Michael Stagg's new series is binge-worthy material. I will begin listening to "True Intent," the second in the series tonight. George Newbern's narration was exceptional for this book.

Lethal Defense
I did not care for this book. Do not enjoy books filled with cursing. Plot was poorly developed. Character development as almost nonexistent. I will be returning this book. Not worth the credit

Just Blah
NO SPOILERS!! I was hoping for something more riveting but it was very hum drum. The only thing spectacular was the narrator and if it wasn’t for him I would have quit.
You will like this book if you like legal dramas... I would not consider this a legal thriller.

Good courtroom drama
A good first experience with this author and reader.
A few criticisms:
The writer's stylistic choice of almost always using "I did" or "he didn't " as responses instead the more commonly used "yes" or "no" would have sounded more natural.
Some elements of the plot beggared belief, but OK.
RE the narrator: he was easy to listen to but could have done better on women's voices. He did on a couple, so why not on the others?

Just ok
Story was enjoyable but unrealistic. The reader was absolutely detrimental to the story. His flippant tone throughout was distracting and annoying. Not sure if I’d be willing to invest any more time in subsequent books.

This was actually a pretty good listen. It took me awhile to get into it and sort out the characters but glad I finished it. Narrator was good.

Perfect legal thriller …
… finally the real thing! A legal thriller that is worth its name, undiluted by any action outside the courtroom and the law office. The reader finds out about the crime through the proceedings in the courtroom. The story unfolds slowly and character take shape as well throughout the course of the story. I also loved the tone of the narrator. In short, the perfect legal thriller.
