Story
In 2018, writer Claire Nelson made international headlines when she fell over 25 feet after wandering off the trail in a deserted corner of Joshua Tree. The fall shattered her pelvis, rendering her completely immobile. There Claire lay for the next four days, surrounded by boulders that muffled her cries for help, but exposed her to the relentless California sun above. Her rescuers had not expected to find her alive. In Things I Learned from Falling, Claire tells not only her story of surviving, but also her story of falling.

Suddenly in the spotlight, 24-year-old Hannah Brown realized that she wasn’t sure what she wanted. After years of competing in beauty pageants, and then starring on The Bachelorette and Dancing with the Stars, she had become incredibly visible. There she was, in her early twenties, with millions around the world examining and weighing in on her every decision. She found herself wondering what it would mean to live on her terms. What it would mean to stop seeking approval from others and decide - for the first time - what it was she wanted from her own life.

Gordie Howe may have been the greatest player in the history of hockey, but greatness was never defined by goals or assists in the Howe household. Greatness meant being the best person you could be, not the best player on the ice. Unlike his two brothers, Murray Howe failed in his attempt to follow in his father's footsteps to become a professional athlete. Yet his failure brought him to the realization that his dream wasn't really to be a pro hockey player. His dream was to be his father. To be amazing at something, but humble and gracious. To be a hero.

With growing academic responsibilities, family commitments, and inboxes, scholars are struggling to fulfill their writing goals. A finished book - or even steady journal articles - may seem like an impossible dream. But, as Joli Jensen proves, it really is possible to write happily and productively in academe. Jensen begins by busting the myth that universities are supportive writing environments. She points out that academia, an arena dedicated to scholarship, offers pressures that actually prevent scholarly writing.

Sally will die in Europe this summer. George Orr dreamed that his girlfriend, Sally Wodehouse, would die on the trip she wanted to take, and he begged her not to go. But Sally did not take him seriously - how could she? She left for Europe in July 1968 with 25 other private-school kids, on "The Odyssey", a 60s version of the Grand Tour. In August 1968, only hours after becoming engaged to George via telegram, she died as he had dreamed she would, in a freak accident. Sally was George's first love, but she was also James FitzGerald's. He was drawn to her energy and warmth, a stunning contrast to the chilly emotional life of his own family.

Story
Air Force pilot Captain Carlyle "Smitty" Harris was shot down over Vietnam on April 4, 1965 and taken to the infamous Hoa Lo prison—nicknamed the "Hanoi Hilton." For the next eight years, Smitty and hundreds of other American POWs—including John McCain and George "Bud" Day—suffered torture, solitary confinement, and unimaginable abuse. It was there Smitty covertly taught the Tap Code—an old, long-unused World War II method of communication—to many POWs. In turn, they taught others, and it quickly became a way for POWs to communicate without their captors' knowledge.

Publisher's Summary
Performed by the author featuring original music by Nick Cordero.
Amanda Kloots bravely reflects on love, loss, and life with her husband, Broadway star, and Tony Award nominee Nick Cordero, whose public battle with COVID-19 and tragic death made headlines around the world.
In March 2020, Broadway star and Tony Award nominee Nick Cordero was hospitalized for what he and his wife, Amanda Kloots, believed to be a severe case of pneumonia. Entering the hospital, they had every reason to believe that Nick - a young father and otherwise healthy man - would return home. After an eventual diagnosis of COVID-19 that led to Nick’s being placed on a ventilator, Amanda took to documenting their journey on social media, showing the dangers COVID-19 posed to everyone, regardless of age. Her updates quickly captivated millions, inspiring people around the globe to dance each day to Nick’s song “Live Your Life” and offer positive thoughts and prayer. When he passed away after 95 grueling days in the ICU, the world grieved for Amanda, her infant son, Elvis, and the future COVID-19 had snatched away from them.
Live Your Life is the story of Nick and Amanda’s life together - of their beautiful relationship, of Nick’s dramatic fight for survival, of those sudden tragic months that permanently changed her world and ours - and of their interrupted future as a family. From the confusing early days of his illness to searching for signs of hope in every update from the doctors to the healing sound of Elvis’s laughter, Amanda details how she approached even the most devastating moments with the personal optimism and faith that have shaped her life. Written with her sister Anna Kloots, who was with her every step of this journey, Live Your Life explores how Amanda’s willingness to accept help from an entire community of people - friends, family, and even total strangers - played a vital role in enduring this hardship. In the process, she offers a touching meditation on how even the worst times have silver linings that deepen our connections to the world around us and to the people who matter most.
What emerges is an inspiring and unexpectedly uplifting message for life in the time of COVID, a vision of courage for anyone coping with overwhelming loss or the collective trauma of what the pandemic has taken from us. A poignant reflection on love, hope, motherhood, and the transformational power of music, Live Your Life is a love letter to Nick and a reminder that, sometimes, celebrating life today is the only path through tomorrow’s darkness.

Beautiful, sweet, heartbreaking
I was actually too scared to follow Nick’s journey in real-time. COVID had made my sister, who lives in Italy, so sick, that I had a mental break in March of 2020.
This story is so beautiful, and hearing Amanda deliver it without holding back emotion was the best way to hear this story.
However, it may make a lot of people upset. Those who had sick or dying family members in the hospital unable to visit them. Those who could not afford a private doctor, those who did not have direct access to so many other doctors that were 100% focused on their loved one, those who had friends and connections in high places that gave them opportunities the rest of us could never even conceive of in 2020.
This is an inspiring and gut-wrenching story told from a place of love & gratitude but also immense privilege. I laughed, I cried, but I also cringed thinking of the hundreds of thousands of other COVID patients and their families and their experience with losing their loved one versus this experience. Amanda does acknowledge the privilege here & there, but it felt more of a toss-in than a real understanding & true appreciation of “it’s not what you know, it’s WHO you know.”
I still recommend this book. It captures life in the time of COVID and does indeed show the amazing power of love, faith, and family.

Grace in Tragedy
Like so many people, I have followed Nick and Amanda’s story since it was first in the media. I was always amazed with the grace, strength and positivity she showed throughout the most difficult time in her life. I thought I knew their story, but after listening to Amanda tell her story in her own words, I am even more amazed.
It is such a beautiful display of grace in tragedy, from how she interacted with the doctors and staff at the hospital, to how she made sure Elvis never felt that anxiety or sadness. She and Nick will forever be in my heart.

Privilege
I am grateful that Amanda realizes the privilege she was afford while Nick was ill. If you or a family member have faced or are facing an ongoing medical crisis this is a very hard book to read, because the central theme of the story is privilege and that is so hard to miss when you are living on the other side of it. I hope that now as an author, tv personality, influencer and more Amanda can not only acknowledge how privilege played a role in her experiences, but bring awareness and change to those that are fighting the same or similar battles everyday that do not have the privilege of friends in high places, fans with lots of money and more. This story shows glimpses of a frustrating and broken healthcare system, now imagine if you were faced with that without the private medical team, a doctor on call 24/7, a huge gofundme account, and all of the amazing attention, support and help that this tragic story garnered.

Incredible story of love and loss
I followed Amanda on Instagram throughout Nick’s time in the hospital and would look for her updates throughout the day just hoping for her miracle. I so appreciate her sharing the good times with the hard through her grieving process.
Like another reviewer, I was wondering what more would be revealed since she was so candid on Instagram and like the other person, I am blown away by everything that she went through. We should all be so lucky to have a strong support system in our darkest days.

Beautiful! Soulful! A book of this time but also timeless!
Amanda Kloots along with her sister, Anna Kloots, have shared a story of love, loss and life after loss so honestly and bravely. At a time of such devastating sorrow they have created something beautiful and transformative. I laughed and cried alongside them on this journey. This is essentially an uplifting book because there is grace- the ability to see the goodness in life and people and a faith in what we can’t see but know is there - eternally. Love.

A powerful story of love, loss, family and positivity. I’m so glad the author narrated this herself. Her authentic emotions coming through in her own voice was so powerful, nobody else could have narrated this book. I laughed with her, felt her frustrations, and bawled my eyes out. I’ll continue to follow her and Elvis’ story on Instagram and pray for healing for her and her family. So glad I bought this audiobook!

I’m from France and I’ve heard about Amanda via Instagram and I’ve followed their journey since her post where she was singing from the hospital parking lot. We all heard Covid stories from everywhere but their stories is heartbreaking and full of hope in the same time!! It’s sad and beautiful in the same time!! This is my first audio book and I’m glad I chose that one because it’s very inspiring and powerful!! Elvis is lucky to have parents like them!! Very well done Amanda and thank you for the truth and honesty in your book!!

We thought we knew, but we had no idea...
so glad I listened to this book. I may need to buy the actual book to re-read again. Hearing Amanda reading the book and all the heartfelt emotions pouring out. like I said, if you followed Nick, Amanda and the whole family during Nivks fight we had no idea. the strength this woman has is amazing.
Nick was an amazing person, though I never knew him well he sure was something else and anyone who met him knew how special and caring he was.
All my love to Amanda and Elvis and both the families ♡
