Story
Thousands of people have had near-death experiences, but scientists have argued that they are impossible. Dr. Eben Alexander was one of those scientists. A highly trained neurosurgeon, Alexander knew that NDEs feel real, but are simply fantasies produced by brains under extreme stress. Then, Dr. Alexander’s own brain was attacked by a rare illness. The part of the brain that controls thought and emotion—and in essence makes us human—shut down completely. For seven days he lay in a coma. Then, as his doctors considered stopping treatment, Alexander’s eyes popped open. He had come back.

Story
For years Brian Weiss, M.D. has focused on leading his patients into the past, yet some of them experienced spontaneous pre-cognitive moments. When developing regression into past lives, one man went forward into the future rather than backward. He entered into an idyllic future life - a passage which helped him emotionally. At that moment, Dr. Weiss recognized that past, present, and future are one. What happens in the future can affect the present, just as the past also influences it.

Suffering from severe spinal and head injuries, Rynes knew she was dying. At that moment, she underwent the first of two life-changing near-death experiences - her consciousness split between her frightened, injured self lying on the road, and an impartial, peaceful observer-consciousness who watched as first responders fought to keep her alive. Her second, more lengthy near-death experience came days later, during the surgery that attempted to repair her traumatized spine.

Publisher's Summary
Dr. Eben Alexander, author of international phenomenon Proof of Heaven, shares the next phase of his journey to understand the true nature of consciousness and how to cultivate a state of harmony with the universe and our higher purpose.
In 2008, Dr. Eben Alexander's brain was severely damaged by a devastating case of bacterial meningitis, and he lapsed into a weeklong coma. It was almost certainly a death sentence, but Dr. Alexander miraculously survived and brought back with him an astounding story. During those seven days in coma, he was plunged into the deepest realms of consciousness, and came to understand profound truths about the universe we inhabit. What he learned changed everything he knew about the brain, mind, and consciousness and drove him to ask a question confounding the entire scientific community: How do you explain the origins of consciousness if it is not a byproduct of the brain? His challenge relates to a revolutionary shift now underway within our modern scientific understanding. Ultimately, direct experience is key to fully understanding how we are all connected through the binding force of unconditional love and its unlimited power to heal.
In Living in a Mindful Universe, the New York Times bestselling author of Proof of Heaven and The Map of Heaven shares his insights into the true nature of consciousness. Embracing his radically new worldview, he began a committed program of personal exploration into non-local consciousness. Along the way, he met Karen Newell, who had spent most of her lifetime living the worldview he had only just discovered was possible. Her personal knowledge came from testing various techniques and theories as part of her daily routine. With Living in a Mindful Universe, they share techniques that can be used to tap into our greater mind, explore how the power of the heart, and discuss how both can enhance healing, relationships, creativity, guidance, and more. Using various modalities related to meditation and mindfulness described herein, you too can gain the power to access that infinite source of knowing so vital to us all.

Thoughtful and inviting
I particularly enjoyed the philosophical and scientific aspects of the book. I am able to hear many experiences of people' near death experiences but very little regarding the journey of the soul. I hope your next book will go into greater deaths.

Medical terms
Eben Alexander is a great author and narrator. I found this book more in medical terms. Hard to understand. Great book for the doctors out there.

thought provoking; narration was meh
Just finished listening to this book. I enjoyed the appendices the most, especially appendix b (in which all things quantum are discussed, briefly… the appendices in their entirety amount to less than 40 minutes of the book).
It was interesting to revisit some of this material. I’ve read Proof of Heaven from this author and this book continues the conversation, a conversation I’ve read about (and, frankly, experienced some of it personally) in many other books in my bulging library, from various points of view.
The recording was okay - the female narrator’s reading voice was flat and lifeless, sort of nasal. Would have preferred for the male narrator to just do the whole thing, since the transitions between the two reading voices were jarring (to me) and sort of bumped me out of the immersive listening experience.
The appendix brought to mind the question on the whole issue of whether reality really is extant without it being observed (if indeed reality is affected directly by being observed). How much intrinsic control *do* we have over forming it? How do opposing wills focused on the same subject achieve individual but differing results? It is all very interesting.
Anyway… I also made a tiramisu, for tomorrow’s dinner for my family.
I think we can all agree that tiramisu is a collectively agreed upon positive outcome insofar as dessert goes.

Great book!
I loved the book and the voice were great as well. I would have liked the chapter section to have the complete chapter titles, this would be easier when searching for a specific chapter.
