About this listen

Audie Award Finalist, Original Work, 2016

Based on the best-selling, award-winning graphic novel series Locke & Key - written by acclaimed suspense novelist Joe Hill (NOS4A2, Horns) and illustrated by Gabriel Rodriguez - this multicast, fully dramatized audio production brings the images and words to life.

A brutal and tragic event drives the Locke family from their home in California to the relative safety of their ancestral estate in Lovecraft, Massachusetts, an old house with powerful keys and fantastic doors that transform all who dare to walk through them. As siblings Tyler, Kinsey, and Bode Locke discover the secrets of the old house, they also find that it's home to a hate-filled and relentless creature that will not rest until it forces open the most terrible door of them all....

Featuring performances by Haley Joel Osment (Entourage, The Sixth Sense), Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black), Kate Mulgrew (Orange Is the New Black, Star Trek: Voyager), Joe Hill, Gabriel Rodriguez, and Stephen King (The Stand, 11-22-63), as well as a cast of more than 50 voice actors, this audio production preserves the heart-stopping impact of the graphic novel's astounding artwork through the use of richly imagined sound design and a powerful original score.

*Locke & Key contains explicit language and adult situations.

Great story, excellent cast, and narrator. This audio
book was so engaging the only thing I didn’t love was the long musical interludes they were in places that made sense just too long..

Bravo audible!

A novel that I could not stop listening to.
The narrator was a perfect match to read Locke & Key.

A very imaginative novel

It seemed to be a series of unfortunate events for the heck of it. At one point it just straight up clicked in my brain that I was not enjoying the listen - I was listening with the expectation of eventual satisfaction.

Look, I'm all for dark themes, but this series is mostly problem after problem with unsatisfactory resolutions given that part of the cause of the original problem is the incompetence/ignorance of the characters and thus their sudden victories seem entirely contrived. Okay, maybe I can't handle the only smart and/or detailed main character being the villain and the kid. Either way, I was not enjoying a lot of it neither intellectually nor emotionally.

The setting, mystery and background of the story are quite wonderful. There are parts that are quite the masterpiece. I just didn't like the in between bits. I wish they fleshed the good parts out more.

Joe Hill has worked on the Dark Tome podcast before, and I enjoyed their story in it much more wholly than Locke and Key. That podcast sent me here, in fact.

The performance is exceptional.

Too inconsequentially heavy

I listened to the audiobook while reading along with the comic and really enjoyed the experience! The voice actors and music bring the comic pages to life in a multimedia experience that keeps true to and on pace with the pages.

Do be warned that there are some parts where you have to do some flipping back and forth in the books if you are trying to follow this version, because the audio tries to keep plotlines together and in as linear an order as possible. There are some awkward parts where the visual gags/information just aren't captured in audio and vice versa and some the audio drags on awkwardly trying to describe some of the splash pages/silent panels. Some language from the page is also modernized in this version.

But overall, the performances are stellar enough that I would combine the audio and visual formats again if I were to reread.

Listen while reading the comic!
