À propos de cet audio

In Lolly Willowes, Sylvia Townsend Warner tells of an aging spinster's struggle to break away from her controlling family - a classic story that she treats with cool feminist intelligence, while adding a dimension of the supernatural and strange.

Warner is one of the outstanding and indispensable mavericks of 20th-century literature, a writer to set beside Djuna Barnes and Jane Bowles, with a subversive genius that anticipates the fantastic flights of such contemporaries as Angela Carter and Jeanette Winterson.

At least, it seems to be in Canada, and is not even available at my local library. I stumbled upon a reference to this book in a Guardian article about novels that feature forests. It is a complete delight and somehow feels both classic and fresh. Sarah Nichols' wry delivery is perfect for Townsend Warner's bracingly precise English and slightly weird sense of humour; I laughed out loud at "Fuseli, pronounced Fuseli" and plenty else!

A hidden gem

The narration is excellent but the story itself is horrible. The main character ends up making a pact with satan and turns herself into a witch so be warned this is not a conventional story.

Excellent narration but terrible story
