Publisher's Summary

"A tour de force...London tracks the history of the English capital from the days of the Celts until the present time.... Breathtaking." - The Orlando Sentinel

Here is Edward Rutherfurd's classic novel of London, a glorious pageant spanning 2,000 years. He brings this vibrant city's long and noble history alive through the ever-shifting fortunes, fates, and intrigues of half-a-dozen families, from the age of Julius Caesar to the 20th century. Generation after generation, these families embody the passion, struggle, wealth, and verve of the greatest city in the world.

Love the story but the narrator ???

I am 81 years old and still not needing a hearing aid but this narrator drove me to distraction. I have read all of Rutherford’s novels and this is the best. However, the narrator has a terrible habit of ending his sentences in a whisper which I cannot hear. In doing this I’ve lost a good part of the story.

I stuck it out to the end because it is a great epic but the narrator ruined it for me. One day I’ll go back and listen again and maybe pick up more of the story....or read it for myself.

can't hear the story

the narrator is so over the top that I'm missing the story.
it's like he's relaying a memory of a jarring event instead of reading a book. not for me

Narration totally ruins the book for me!

Always enjoyed his books. But this narrator ruins it for me. Tries to hard, not natural narration, ok when he is not impersonating a protagonist but otherwise ..aah I wonder if I even will get to half the book let alone the end .

Satisfying immersive experience

I enjoyed both the performance and the epic and layered story about a fascinating city.

Too ambitious

I had à hard time to follow what was going on with too many characters over too long time. I found this book really boring. I finishéd it but it was as a, duty, no enjoyment.

Everything was great. This is the second time I've read it. Timeless mysteries abound.

Love this book

I was born within the sound of Bow Bells making me a Cockney so it’s probably no surprise that I’ve read this book three times. Listening to Andrew bring the saga to life with his interpretation of the different characters throughout the ages the book covers was faultless. I am now looking for other books narrated by him!

Simply the best

I have read/listened to hundreds upon hundreds of books, and this is by far my favorite I have ever read. The way author intertwines the families evolution throughout the centuries is spectacular and if you are a fan of British history it gives you a whole perspective of everyday life in London throughout its entire history viewing life through the eyes of different classes and stations. It covers from the mundane day to day activities and behaviours to seemingly first hand accounts of significant events that shaped the city, country, and world. A long go but the narrator keeps things exciting and is a welcome change to the dryness of most other narrators of historical stories. Worth every second. Could listen again and would highly recommend.

wonderful

I enjoyed the pictures of London's history forever imprinted in my memory. I wish there was a picture of the family tree to go with the story.
