Publisher's Summary

The fifth entry in the CWA Gold Dagger-winning Slough House series featuring Jackson Lamb.

London Rules might not be written down, but everyone knows rule one: Cover your arse.

At MI5 headquarters Regent's Park, First Desk Claude Whelan is learning this the hard way. Tasked with protecting a beleaguered prime minister, he's facing attack from all directions himself: from the showboating MP who orchestrated the Brexit vote and now has his sights set on Number 10; from the showboat's wife, a tabloid columnist, who's crucifying Whelan in print; from the PM's favorite Muslim, who's about to be elected mayor of the West Midlands, despite the dark secret he's hiding; and especially from his own deputy, Lady Di Taverner, who's alert for Claude's every stumble. Meanwhile, the country's being rocked by an apparently random string of terror attacks.

Over at Slough House, the MI5 satellite office for outcast and demoted spies, the agents are struggling with personal problems: repressed grief, various addictions, retail paralysis, and the nagging suspicion that their newest colleague is a psychopath. Plus someone is trying to kill Roddy Ho. But collectively, they're about to rediscover their greatest strength- the ability to make a bad situation much, much worse.

One more success

So, I am now convinced this is one of the best series I have listened to on Audible - and I’ve listened to my share. It’s the narrator with the story filled with great characters- have already purchased the next in series.

The latest and best of a great series

I found the Slough House series a few months ago and have read them all. Some of them twice. This is the latest and the best. There is humor - the sly, English variety - in all of them, but this one has more than usual and it adds immeasurably to the book.

The characters are fun - they are interesting and, while they could be paper doll flat - the author is able to bring these disparate and quirky people to life. Moreover, he makes them likable. You want them to do well. You want them to triumph. You want to have them come back and save the day again and again. You want to read about them in a whole lot more books - I'm waiting for the next one already.

These are spy books, with some mysteries involved. They also are adventures, of a sort - and they are immensely entertaining. More, bring me more.

Best Mick Herron yet!

Mick Herron continues to entertain and improve on his franchise series at Slough House. The stories are interesting and unpredictable, the characters are unique and interesting and the narration is world class. Bravo Mick, your next installment in the Slough House Series can not come soon enough!

The funniest of Herron's Slough House books

Clever and engaging, with great narration by Gerard Doyle. This is the 5th Slough House novel and the series appears to be getting better with each one. It is satirical and contemporary, with subtle digs at Trump and unsubtle satire about the bigoted Brexit folks. The point of view slips easily and believably in and out of different characters' heads without losing its focus. The new kind of terrorist in this novel comes in the form of a small group of young North Korean men on a violent assignment. Herron manages to make them three dimensional. Roddy Ho's cluelessness is what sets this story moving, and it's really very funny. My only disappointment -- and it's a small one -- is that River Cartwright is barely a presence in this story. Even though Herron has called these the Jackson Lamb novels it has never felt that way to me. In the first book, Slow Horses, River is the protagonist and in the most recent one, Spook Street, his is the leading role too. I think he should stay at the forefront. Lamb is a great character but never changes and the descriptions of his slovenliness are getting a little old. That said, this is an excellent listen. I highly recommend it.

It doesn’t get any better

This is a great book with great characters. For once he didn’t know what was going to happen and that’s mystery. The characters are fantastic it’s a wonderful satire have spy novels and of the English political system. It has also elements that would satisfy Nassim Taleb readers with unknown unknowns and false conclusions.

In retrospect, top of series

First listened in 2019, gave it 5 stars across the board. Now -2 years later - listening again, wish I could give it 10. Plot, characters, pace, voicing - perfection. In light of 2 more years of human craziness, aspects of the work seem prophetic. In a Jackson Lamb way, profane, sulfuric, profound.

These Are As Good As It Gets

This whole series is outstanding. Mick Herron is simply the Best author writing on the British security services since LeCarre ( whom he owes more than a tip of the hat to) and this series is the best thing done on the Intelligence services since George Smiley. Like LeCarre, what sets Herron's work apart is not only his 'spot on' feel for a certain kind of UK and certain kinds of class structures, but also the fact that any one of these books read alone is also a fantastic novel in and of itself. You can read any one of the Slough House books as a 'stand alone' but - that having been said - you'll probably enjoy them more if you read them in order since, as with the Smiley books, there is a consistent, and wonderful, cast of characters whose lives interweave and whose stories develop and evolve through the series. Herron writes beautifully, with doses of humor, and poignancy that never tip over into melodrama. Gerard Doyle is also a great narrator, and, on top of it all, the stories are terrific. Give Slough House a try. You won't be sorry. MORE Than Worth The Credit!

Best one yet!

Fans of Jackson Lamb and his band of MI-5 f***-ups will laugh out loud, but the book also has a poignancy and an unwavering respect for its flawed characters. I want to reread the whole series from the beginning.

Love this series

All the books in this series are enjoyable. I love all the damaged characters because really, they are all of us, trying to figure out what’s next, what’s right, what’s wrong, et seq....and we all need a version of Mister Lamb in our lives.

Great!!

I’m so excited about what is, to me, a stupendous new series. Great characters, interesting story line, wonderful style. And quite frequent humor that nevertheless does not jar against the strength of the story and character development. LOVE this series. Also, the narrator is a skilled actor, too. His female character voices are very good, not that fruity mocking “female” voice other male narrators use that often ruins a book recording. I highly recommend this entire series of books and of recorded books.
