Publisher's Summary
From the scion of Hollywood royalty - son of Michael Douglas, grandson of Kirk Douglas - a moving, often shocking, ultimately inspiring memoir detailing his struggle to regain his dignity, humanity, and place in society after many years of drug abuse and almost eight years in prison.
Cameron Douglas is born into wealth, privilege, and comfort. His parents are glamorous jet-setters, his father a superstar, his mother a beautiful socialite, his grandfather a legend. On the surface, his life seems golden. But by the age of 30, he has taken a hellish dive: He's become a drug addict, a thief, and - after a DEA drug bust - a convicted drug dealer sentenced to five years in prison, with another five years added to his sentence while incarcerated. Eventually, he will spend two years in solitary, where he manages, nonetheless, to hold fast to the brutal ethos of prison survival... until: he begins to reverse his savage transformation, to understand the psychological turmoil that has tormented him for years, and to prepare for what will be a profoundly challenging, but eventually deeply satisfying and successful, reentry into society at large.
Sparing no one in his sphere - least of all himself - Cameron Douglas gives us a raw and unstintingly honest recounting of his harrowing, remarkable, and, in the end, inspiring life story.

Excellent book!
I started it as soon as it appeared in my pre ordered downloads on Tuesday morning and was unfortunately finished by Saturday morning. I I feel like i have spent the week with Cameron and very sorry it had to end!
Great story about someone's decline. A peak inside life as a celebrity child, drug addict and dealer, then life behind bars and how he survived it.
it was well written, totally engrossing story. Very raw. it's a different story of addiction in that he had so many opportunities to make a different path. Highly recommend!

Not There Yet
Cameron Douglas is to be commended for two things: After many false starts, he is off drugs and ultimately, in his late thirties, finally takes his father's advice upon prison release and immediately write this book. If the author is really serious about helping other teenagers take a path opposite his own, he should revise some of the language and remove some content not appropriate to school-age children. With that said, this book is a must read wake-up call and warning to teenagers and young adults from all walks of life, not just those of privilege
My primary criticism is that it is not until the very last chapter that Cameron addresses what experience tells me to be his greatest impediment toward achieving life-long sobriety. As a parent of three adults about Cameron's age, feeling "entitled" is one of the core roots of such erratic behaviors as he describes.
At the end of this essay, the author is at last considering the impact of that entitlement on his decisions. He is still contemplating his own comfort and relaxation. He is still making questionable decisions, such as fathering a child soon after being granted freedom. He still depends heavily on his wonderful parents, and is just now learning his former "party scene biosphere" might not be in his best interest. His father is "cautiously optimistic" about his son's continued progress and his mother is very doting and forgiving. This reader is also "cautiously optimistic" for Cameron's future success and sobriety. I feel he will always need to be cognizant of limits and dangers. He is definitely on the right path.

A must read
For anyone that has struggled with addiction or felt that they have been treated differently ( good or bad) based solely on name this is a MUST read. Cameron was brutally honest regarding everything that he went through and the emotion is Raw and Real. As a recovering heroine addict I completely identified with this book. Feeling both sorry for and frustrated with the Author. It’s hard to put down and anyone dealing with this addiction needs to read. Thank you Cameron Douglas for opening up!

It’s Complicated
It’s hard to suspend judgement about such a privileged person. He does come off as a seriously spoiled drug addict with a penchant for spectacular lies and bad behavior. That said, I think it was brutally honest told in his voice and I was riveted. I hope he continues to stay sober. He has so much to live for but he might just be too addicted to drugs and his old life. I hope I have to eat those words. I just want to shake him because as I said he is so privileged and clearly has some talent. He also has an amazing support system. Just goes to show what a beast addiction is.

Good listen.
Very interesting. I agree with another review about some of the subject matter should've been left out. He does go into detail about what the prison life is like. I can't help but to feel that he was still very privileged because of his unnecessary joke about not having many teeth left, when the facts are that most drugs do damage teeth, and the majority of drug users can't afford all the dental work that is required to keep your teeth good while using drugs for extended periods of time. Not wanting to give anything else away, I will say it was an interesting listen into his life of what it's like being in prison, being an addict, and his life as the son and grandson of such big celebrities.
