One year ago, Isabelle Drake's life changed forever: her toddler son, Mason, was taken out of his crib in the middle of the night while she and her husband were asleep in the next room. With little evidence and few leads for the police to chase, the case quickly went cold. However, Isabelle cannot rest until Mason is returned to her—literally. Except for the occasional catnap or small blackout where she loses track of time, she hasn’t slept in a year. Isabelle's entire existence now revolves around finding him, but she knows she can’t go on this way forever.

Now reduced to a schoolyard chant, the Hope family murders shocked the Maine coast one bloody night in 1929. While most people assume seventeen-year-old Lenora was responsible, the police were never able to prove it. Other than her denial after the killings, she has never spoken publicly about that night, nor has she set foot outside Hope’s End, the cliffside mansion where the massacre occurred. It’s now 1983, and home-health aide Kit McDeere arrives at a decaying Hope’s End to care for Lenora after her previous nurse fled in the middle of the night.

Publisher's Summary
"Wildly entertaining."--New York Times Book Review
From the bestselling and award-winning author comes a wickedly clever and fast-paced novel of greed, revenge, obsession—and quite possibly the perfect murder.
Simon and Vicky couldn’t seem more normal: a wealthy Chicago couple, he a respected law professor, she an advocate for domestic violence victims. A stable, if unexciting marriage. But one thing’s for sure … absolutely nothing is what it seems. The pair are far from normal, and one of them just may be a killer. When the body of a beautiful socialite is found hanging in a mansion in a nearby suburb, Simon and Vicky’s secrets begin to unravel. A secret whirlwind affair. A twenty-million-dollar trust fund about to come due. A decades-long grudge and obsession with revenge. These are just a few of the lies that make up the complex web...and they will have devastating consequences. And while both Vicky and Simon are liars, just who exactly is conning who? Part Gone Girl, part Strangers on a Train, Look Closer is a wild rollercoaster of a read that will have you questioning everything you think you know.
What the critics say
"I’ll tell you what—Look Closer is James Patterson’s Book Club selection. You won’t forget this novel, and these characters—good and bad—for a long time."—James Patterson
“Serpentine revelations will surprise even the cleverest mystery readers. This complex tale of triple-crossings and devious revenge should win Ellis new fans.”—Publishers Weekly
“Twisty, intricately plotted…. Even seasoned mystery readers won’t be able to predict all the knots in Simon and Vicky’s tangled web of deception. A roller-coaster ride full of unexpected twists and turns.”—Kirkus Reviews

Definitely lots of twists and turns
I thought this was overall an entertaining listen. The first part is excellent and is like a neo noir thriller. It is very unpredictable and liked the character development. I wasn't too crazy about the narration. The lack of voice differentiation made it difficult to figure who was saying what. I also felt the the last part of the book was not so clever but more so far fetched and improbable.

Terrible Book
Things to know about this book:
1. the narrators speak in first person
2. It jumps around to multiple characters. including a characters journal entries.
3. the narrator who does simon does ok until he tries to do other characters... it gets super cringey
4. all of the characters are awful
5. the author is clearly misogynistic. A couple of times, I thought to myself, "Did he actually write that!"
6. it's long and filled with a ton of filler that does not contribute to the story
7. It's predictable and filled with old, tired tropes.
Honestly, just skip it and save your credit!

Disappointing
This book is hampered by some weak narration. The two female narrators are terrible, but the voice of Vicky is by far the worst. The actor voicing Simon is great, the narrator voicing Christian is meh, he sounds like a Brit attempting American accents.
The story wasn't "wickedly clever and fast paced", instead it was crass, juvenile, and mind numbing.
The story becomes tedious and boring in the second half. It didn't really hold my attention.

So much going on
I finished this book, but it wasn't easy. There were so many. characters intertwined with each other that. It wasn't hard to follow exactly, but I had trouble keeping up with everyone. The narrators did an awesome job....Loved them all. I did manage to figure out who done it.... and that was a good twist in the story. The last part of the book was interesting, but overall I though it was way too long,... not in hours, just too long in general

It’s the stereotype of an airport novel
A multi perspective story that falls apart when you try to understand the choices that certain characters make who aren’t covered in the story. A big pet peeve when you follow the thoughts of characters and the author deliberately lies about their own thoughts and intentions until they are ready to reveal the twists. Speaking of twists, I found the core elements behind character motivations predictable a little more than halfway through and they try to throw so many twists at you that it completely loses the sense of realism it’s trying to create as everything is way to cleanly constructed. Felt very aware I was reading a book that was outlined and pieced together rather than an immersive story.

Wasted Credit
Horrible experience. The narrator's were absolutely horrible. Long, confusing chapters with too many characters and too much going on.

Second time listening!
This story has it all! Second time listening and it was just as good as the first time I learned!

So good and twisty
I really enjoyed this book. I could feel the characters in a very genius plot with many juicy twists. Recommended.
