À propos de cet audio

From USA Today best-selling author Sydney Jane Baily

From the lush English countryside to the glittering society of Victorian London, and the shabbier side of its gambling hells, Lord Despair thought he'd left the worst behind in the Burmese jungle. He was wrong.

Lord Simon Devere returns from the Burmese War haunted by the vivid memory of his slain cousin and powerless to know reality from dreams. Unable to sleep lest he awaken in the cell of his nightmares, he sits in the dark, incapable of believing he is truly home - and safe - in England.

Jenny Blackwood is determined not to let her mother and sisters succumb to an unkind fate. With a head for numbers, she becomes the skilled bookkeeper "Mr. Cavendish". One unexpected client is the nobleman cruelly named by gossips as Lord Despair.

With the estate's coffers mysteriously dwindling, Jenny goes where others fear to tread: into the darkened room of the unstable earl. Encouraged by her tenacity, Simon believes he can become the man he once was. However, as friendship quickly sparks into passion, they discover the greatest danger lies ahead of them, and the biggest threat to Jenny may be Lord Despair himself.

This is a beautiful story about the struggles of mental health and how the power of love has the ability to help others heal.

Wonderfully Written

The love story is cute (with nothing graphic). The financial issue was anti climatic. It’s like figuring out the problem was good enough and then with a quick snap of the fingers, everything is well. But then the PTSD arc was stretched out more than necessary to create more drama that could’ve been achieved with the financial arc. Or maybe I was just disappointed because my imagination had more flare?
I haven’t fallen in love with the other characters, so I will not continue unless they become free.
I did enjoy the narrator and might look into that instead.

Entertaining but missing the mark

The story line was enjoyable but it was not developed fully , there were many lose ends. There were no points on mentioning incidents that left unresolved. Such as why the widow of the cousin has sold his husband holding and uninvited moved into the main character house, or what was the role of math tutor and his secret meeting with the widow and why Jen tried to sneak into her house, and all the questions she asked and remained unanswered. and why Simon didn’t confront his uncle for the gambling debts. And what is the point of proxy gambling if you don’t gamble yourself how can you enjoy a someone else gamble for you and you are constantly losing other people’s money.

Good story line, but immature and not developed fully.
