Publisher's Summary

From the number-one New York Times best-selling author of The Darkest Minds comes a sweepingly ambitious, high-octane tale of power, destiny, love, and redemption.

Every seven years, the Agon begins. As punishment for a past rebellion, nine Greek gods are forced to walk the earth as mortals. They are hunted by the descendants of ancient bloodlines, all eager to kill a god and seize their divine power and immortality.

Long ago, Lore Perseous fled that brutal world, turning her back on the hunt’s promises of eternal glory after her family was murdered by a rival line. For years she's pushed away any thought of revenge against the man - now a god - responsible for their deaths.

Yet as the next hunt dawns over New York City, two participants seek her out: Castor, a childhood friend Lore believed to be dead, and Athena, one of the last of the original gods, now gravely wounded.

The goddess offers an alliance against their mutual enemy and a way to leave the Agon behind forever. But Lore's decision to rejoin the hunt, binding her fate to Athena's, will come at a deadly cost - and it may not be enough to stop the rise of a new god with the power to bring humanity to its knees.

Good with some flaws

I enjoyed the characterization of the characters a lot, very well fleshed out. Had some pacing issues and I wasn’t a fan of the wrap ups for some plot points but not a bad story.

The story was okay - good narrator

I feel like most of these audio books hinges on the voice and style of the narrator which is tragic.

The story itself wasnt bad but nothing special

Just...Perfect

The narrator was chosen perfectly to make each word as powerful as it was meant to be, and the story just hit the perfect target. Wonderfully wtitten, I loved every part of it!

So good!

Phenomenal book! I couldn’t stop listening to it from the moment I started it. I ended up listening to it sped up because the narration was a bit slow, but it was great! It was nice because it was one of those books where you aren’t sure what is about to happen next and it keeps you on the edge of your seat. Highly recommend!

Fast Paced And Really Enjoyable :D

OHHH man, this book guys .. this book .. it was really gruesome and bloody to the core, yet I enjoyed it ALOT :D, so excited that I am among the first who read this book
So the story is kind of complicated but I will simplify it as much as I can .. so we have 9 Greek gods led by Zeus .. these gods abused their powers on humanity to punish them Zeus decided to make an Agone, it's a competition for a week, during this week these gods become human and actually can die by special people called Hunters and these are people who are descendants from legendary Greek heroes, and once one of them kills the god the person who killed him\her gains their power and honors his family and this has gone on for 1400 years .. So this year the Agone began and we are following Lore who is the last of her bloodline as she tries to avenge her family from the one who killed them by working with Athena who is a god *GASP* and the whole book is set during the week of this time's Agone

For the people who said there was no romance in the book .. EXCUSE ME ???? did you say no romance ??? what part of Castor and Lore's relationship is not romantic in your opinion??? .. literally every time they are together they are moony eyes for each other .. I really REALLY enjoyed this book and it's the second 2021 release that I enjoyed this much .. yaaayy so excited, this book got me in such a good mood with it's brutality :D

the narrator was the worst part of the book, she didn't have a huge voice range and at some point everyone sounded the same to me .. that's why I had to read the physical book most of the time to keep up with the adventure

Excellent Story!

This is an excellent story based on the lives of the Greek gods. It introduces a new story of the Agon, a battle the gods and mortals have been locked into for centuries. I couldn’t step away! Narration was also excellent and proved that there are indeed narrators that can make me want to keep listening.

Chapters didn’t match up

My only complaint is that the chapters didn’t match up with the book. I go back and forth reading out of the book and listening to it so this made it very confusing.

Olympian Hunger Games in NYC

Not much else to say here. The characters were frequently cringey but usually due to immaturity (since they are teens). And I didn’t feel that this author’s version of the Olympian gods dovetailed with the meta messaging in the actual myths. But on the surface the representation made sense. And I did appreciate the LGBTQIA inclusion.

awesome plot twist

this book starts a bit slow but when it starts to pick up it's just hits the ground running! I'm so used to predicting the twists regular stories throw at you but this one caught me by surprise several times. the narrator does a great job with the different voices so you can always tell whose talking which I really appreciate. Also if you know a good bit about Greek mythology you'll feel right at home and really love that the book doesn't waste time giving detailed recounts of popular myths, it gives enough context incase you don't know the original story but also doesnt talk down to the reader. I definitely recommend giving this one a listen.

Narrator made this story unlistenable!

I am going to assume the story was good, because I never finished listening to it! The narrator’s voice lacked a draw to continue to listen. I was literally bored just listening to an almost monotone voice! Maybe you should consider changing the narrator. I could not listen to her any longer!

Such a brilliant idea but sadly falls flat immediately by being set in modern day New York

This idea has such a fantastic merit to it the book itself I find is unreadable/unlistenable completely due to the fact they attempted to merge two worlds that just cannot mix to any extent. You’ll begin into this lore about Grecian gods turned to modern day New York absolutely takes you out of this literally around every turn. The story has no real up or down. The modern day setting removes the fun of this story. If this book had just embraced the actual backdrop of the story maybe this book would have been what was expected but frankly this feels like a child’s attempt at a book and it frankly is one of the worst things I’ve ever even ingested.

ALL CONSUMING AND ENGROSSING

This book was everything I’ve been missing since I read Circe years ago. A beautiful and powerful reimagining of Greek mythology in modern times.

Read it. You won’t regret it.

A Must Read!

This may have been the best book I've read in the past year or so. I loved every moment! If you like action, mythology, and/or strong female protagonists...than this book is for you!

Percy Jackson meets Hunger Games

A cross between Hunger Games and Percy Jackson, this book had me hooked from the start. I had to rush through it to get done for book club, but this is a story I couldn't put down so it was easy. Another of stories lately I feel have good plot but terrible writing or cheesey romances. This was an exception. Probably my favorite book since SJM. It would have been really easy for this book to fall in the category of rip offs, but it held its own beautifully. It kept a beautiful pace, had a cute believable romance, well rounded characters, and a story line that actually made sense. Tgere were deffinitely some themes in here: womens rights, trauma, sexual abuse, and coping, they all realistically lended themselves to the story without making me feel like i was having politics shoved down my throat, a concept which is increasingly hard to find. I will definitely be reading any other books in this series or by this author.

*note: I switched back and forth between audio and text and enjoyed both, which is unusal, in a good way. The narrator was fantastic!
