Publisher's Summary

Comedian and cult hero Chris Gethard performs his laugh-out-loud, kick-in-the-pants self-help narrative for anyone who ever felt like they didn’t fit in or couldn’t catch a break, showing us how to get over our fear of failure and start living life on our own terms. This audiobook edition of Lose Well concludes with exclusive bonus conversations with Chris Gethard and special guests who are referenced throughout the audiobook: Gregg Gethard, Mike Dolan, Todd Tondera, Danny Tobia, Mark Moran, Frank Piegaro, and Jeremy Redleaf.

Let’s face it: we all want a seat at the cool table, a great job, and loads of money. But most of us won’t be able to achieve this widely accepted, black-or-white, definition of winning, which makes us feel like failures, that we’re destined to a life of loserdom. That’s the conventional wisdom. It’s also crap, according to comedian and cult hero Chris Gethard, who knows a thing of two about losing. Failing is an art form, he argues; in fact, it’s the only the way we’re ever going to discover who we are, what we really want, and how to live the kind of life we only dreamed about.

Setting flame to vision boards and tossing out the "seven simple steps" to achieving anything, the host of the eponymous TruTV talk show and the wildly popular podcast Beautiful Stories from Anonymous People illustrates his personal and professional manifesto with hilarious and ultimately empowering stories about his own setbacks, missteps, and public failures, from the cancellation of his Comedy Central sitcom after seven episodes to rediscovering his comedic voice and life’s purpose on a public access channel.

With his trademark wit and inspiring storytelling - a cross between David Sedaris and Jenny Lawson - Gethard teaches us how to power through our own hero’s journey, whether we’re a 15-year-old starting a punk band or a 50-year-old mother of three launching an Etsy page. In the process, he shows us how to fail with grace, laugh on the way down, and as we dust ourselves off, how to transform inevitable failures into endless opportunities. It might get a little messy, but that’s exactly the point. Because the first step in living on your own terms is learning how to lose well, and more often than not, the revolutionary act of failing lets us witness firsthand what awaits us on the other side.

Not just funny, also helpful

As a fan of Chris Gethard, I knew he was funny, and knew he was a good writer, but this book is incredibly insightful. He somehow managed to make a self help group that doesn't use fluffy positive messaging or recycled eastern philosophy. I recommend this book to anybody who aspires for something better in life.

Chris kills it if course, enjoyable book with great take away lessons. I'm not even done yet but since it's a new book I wanted to rate so that people will buy it!

Chris Gethard is Awesome.

One time I was sitting alone at the bar of a Boston Pizza and went looking for a new podcast. Beautiful Anonymous was one of the first hits in the comedy genre and on a whim, I decided to check it out. That day changed my life for the better. With every new episode I learn more about who this guy is and what he stands for. For months I heard him plug his show, and though I did look it up and have watched a handful of episodes with my main reaction being “What the hell IS this?” I began to become more of a fan of the man who was running it. Through listening to this book, BA, a handful of other podcasts that Chris has been a part of, and watching a few awkward hours of TCGS, I have begun to think of Geth as a huge inspiration for following my heart, my dreams, and traffic lights.
Thank you.

Chris Gethard is the Best Friend I Never Had!

This is one of those special books that you just have to listen to audio style! In fact, I placed my local Chapters with this book debating whether I should go hardback or audio. I'm really glad I chose the audiobook.

Like the headline says, Chris provides the loving, yet realistic perspective to following your dreams that only a true bff could provide.

I really want to be able to download it so by partner can give it a listen too, but I don't know if the Audible demigods allow for such downloads.

Give it a listen, I think you'll like it!

WHAT A LOSER

Its okay to LOSE? Really? Lose well, do tell? So I began chapter one... and on to chapter two etc... Ive purchased hard copies for friends and gifted the audible. Its entertaining and life changing. I am a proud loser with some wins along the way. Inspired, I'm ready to go back out there and lose until I win. Respectfully, Mr. Gethard, what a loser. Thank you for sharing and inspiring wins yet to be and may many more wins be yours.

Beautiful UNanonymous

I am an avid Beautiful Anonymous listener (Chris Gethard's podcast). This book felt like it turned the call around & allowed him to tell his story in a raw & inspiring way. Chris really is in touch with how he got where he is, and tells his story that resonates with many of us underdogs & "weirdos". I loved this book so much. I had to stop & cry a few times, but overall it helped me take stock of my hopes and dreams.

Love Chris. Love Beaitiful Anon. But this book is

just like listening to him talk about himself on podcast.only nonstop.
I just can't do whole book of it. sorry know sounds brutal. Its just repetition stuff us original hardcore podcast/Gethard fans already know.

Chris is the best

Great follow up to A Bad Idea I’m About to Do. Chris is the best and this book can be read as either a fun read or motivation to get your ass in great to do the thing you keep pushing to the sidelines out of fear of failure.
The narration from Chris makes this what it is. Couldn’t recommend this enough!

Best book written by a comedian

It’s ridiculous to rate a book on a 1 to 5 scale.
If War and Peace is a five I guess this book would be -24.
But if War and Peace is a gourmet meal it a 5 star gourmet meal.
This book is a 5 star healthy protein bar. It’s definitely one of the best books written by a comedian that I’ve read. Most of the time I can’t even finish them, they are do trivial. Usually comedians can’t write well. Chris is a good story teller.
I don’t quite think he is in a league with David Sedaris , Dave Barry or Spaulding Gray...but I think he could be a great writer / story teller... if he wanted to...
As far as this book is concerned really like his stories (if that was not clear)I was a little board by the life coaching but other people might like that part. And it would have been easy for me to skip those parts if I liked.
If this book were longer I would have stayed with it. And he seems like such a mensch, you have to like him.
Chris seems like a fun interesting guy, someone I’d like to hang out with (don’t worry I’m not a stalker).
The reason I listened in the first place is because I love the HBO show. It’s interesting to see a guy like Chris do a bunch of things some I love like the HBO show, some I like such as this book. Some I’m on the fence with like the podcast and some I hate like the Chris Gethard show. But whatever he puts out I’m going to at least try. I’m a fan.
I just downloaded “A bad idea I’m about to do”

Beautiful Anonymous Fan Who Wanted More

I discovered Chris Gethard from his podcast Beautiful Stories from Anonymous People and found the podcast to be completely captivating. When I found out he wrote a book I was instantly intrigued so I used a credit on this as soon as I could. The audio version narrated by Chris would be the only way I'd even consider this book so props for that. What I enjoyed most was his animated recounts from his childhood and early adulthood. The "self help" part of the book was just okay. It was better than a traditional self help book for sure. I appreciate his encouraging readers to embrace failure as part of success, and listening to the book definitely brightened my day. I just so happened to like the other parts better. Worth the use of the credit overall.

So thankful. It’s worth the purchase.

I’ve become a fan of Chris Gethard through his podcast, Beautiful Anonymous. It’s no surprise that I then became a fan of all of his work. This book is fantastic and though I’m not an artist it still provided valuable advice, encouragement, and insight.

I listened to on audiobook because I wanted to hear it first from Chris’ point of view. I do plan on buying a paper copy and making everyone I know read it.

It’s worth the purchase.

Fun and instructive

This book was fun and positive. it did feel a little meandering at times, but then again I typically like straight up self help books, so it was just a very different place. A little bit more vulgarity than I'm used to I felt was in contexts that were more historical than anything. would recommend to anyone looking for some fun and positivity who also struggles with perfectionism.

Hilarious, Thoughtful and Motivating!

I have been a Chris Gethard fan for a few years or so and was extremely excited for his latest. It did not disappoint. Chris is as honest as ever and tells a number of funny inspiring tales in which he chases his dreams despite crazy odds.

The audio version also comes with bonus content and interviews which make it all the more endearing.

Stunned but not surprised by this gem.

Geth is eloquent, thoughtful, and impactful as ever. Fantastic to hear expanded stories I’ve only otherwise picked up on anecdotal reference to. Amazing additional content for the audiobook. Will continue to support this dude forever and recommend everything he does to everyone I know.
