Publisher's Summary

In the wilderness, one false step can make the difference between a delightful respite and a brush with death.

On a beautiful summer afternoon in 1998, Dan Stephens, a 22-year-old canoeist, was leading a trip deep into Ontario's Quetico Provincial Park. He stepped into a gap among cedar trees to look for the next portage - and did not return. More than four hours later, Dan awakened from a fall with a lump on his head and stumbled deeper into the woods, confused.

Three years later, Jason Rasmussen, a third-year medical student who loved the forest's solitude, walked alone into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness on a crisp fall day. After a two-day trek into a remote area of the woods, he stepped away from his campsite and made a series of seemingly trivial mistakes that left him separated from his supplies, wet, and lost, as cold darkness fell.

Enduring days without food or shelter, these men faced the full harsh force of wilderness, the place that they had sought out for tranquil refuge from city life. Lost in the Wild takes listeners with them as they enter realms of pain, fear, and courage, as they suffer dizzying confusion and unending frustration, and as they overcome seemingly insurmountable hurdles in a race to survive.

Struggled to finish

I had a hard time staying interested with this one... The stories were good but the bouncing back and forth between the two was frustrating. Wasn't my favorite narration either.

Painful (minor spoiler)

I finished this audiobook only because I hate not finishing books, and wanted to know the ending, as it's based on true events. But it was a close thing; the writing is not great--between his overusing various words (you could make a drinking game out of "reconnoiter" alone), insistence on attempting to describe urination poetically at least 3 times (once is too much), and beating the reader/listener over the head with imagery (e.g. when they find the tent--we get it, they all thought he was dead), and for many other reasons, it was hard to get through.

The narration was no better. He made the dialogue sound as though it were entirely given in bullet points, jerky exclamations that meant I couldn't connect with any character. Worse was the voice--or I should say voices. His regular voice was overly dramatic, like listening to a movie trailer announcer reading a novel--but his character voices were awful. Women all sounded like fluffy-headed idiots, and regional accents were terrible.

The most enjoyment I got out of this audiobook was yelling at it, so I really can't recommend it. Find the news stories and read those instead.

Very suspenseful!

This book was very suspenseful from beginning to end! I was on the edge of my earphones more than once and cried several times due to the different outcomes! Wow! It's amazing how easy it is for Mother Nature to play with us like a cat with a little field mouse in her paws when she wants to! Roger Wayne was spot on with his narration in all ways that were very engaging as a listener. Loved it and am going to listen again.

Great for the outdoors lover

Excellent stories and gripping insights to the beauty and harshness of mother nature. Although trying to illustrate a scene and an emotion, occasionally the book can get lost in details and names. Aside from that this book has you realizing just how insignificant you can be out in the wild, up against mother nature's bare elements.

True story

If you're familiar with wilderness travel, you'll spend a lot of time shaking your head at all the mistakes the Characters make. But realizing it's a true story, makes sense.

Much Better Than I Expected

I'm not sure why I originally purchased this one, I think it was a 2 for 1 sale. I had been putting it off for a while, but I really really enjoyed it. it's a great story, I learned some stuff and already knew some of the mistakes the characters made. The narrator was great, definitely worth a listen.

Survival at its finest !

I wasn't sure if this Audible book would keep me interested but once I started it, I wanted to keep listening to it. The human spirit is amazing and it truly makes one wonder how people keep trekking on even at such odds.
