Story
In her lively social history of American women and aging, acclaimed New York Times columnist Gail Collins illustrates the ways in which age is an arbitrary concept that has swung back and forth over the centuries. From Plymouth Rock (when a woman was considered marriageable if "civil and under fifty years of age"), to a few generations later, when they were quietly retired to elderdom once they had passed the optimum age for reproduction, to recent decades, American attitudes towards age have been a moving target.

August 1939: London is dismal under the weight of impending war with Germany as Hitler’s forces continue to sweep across Europe. Into this uncertain maelstrom steps Grace Bennett, young and ready for a fresh start in the bustling city streets she’s always dreamed of - and miles away from her troubled past in the countryside. With aspirations of working at a department store, Grace never imagined she’d wind up employed at Primrose Hill, an offbeat bookshop nestled in the heart of the city - after all, she’s never been much of a reader.

This collection of 25 Hercule Poirot adventures is compiled from short stories written by Agatha Christie for The Sketch magazine in 1923 from March to December. In these stories, including "The Disappearance of Mr. Davenheim", "The Veiled Lady", and "The Adventure of the Egyptian Tomb", the eccentric private detective slowly and surely solves mysteries involving jealousy, revenge, and greed. These stories were well-received at the time and cemented Christie's reputation as the worthy successor to Arthur Conan Doyle.

In the nearly two years since Anthony Bourdain's death, no one else has come close to filling the void he left. His passion for and genuine curiosity about the people and cultures he visited made the world feel smaller and more connected. Despite his affable, confident, and trademark snarky TV persona, the real Tony was intensely private, deeply conflicted about his fame, and an enigma even to those close to him. Tony’s devoted crew knew him best, and no one else had a front-row seat for as long as his director and producer, Tom Vitale.

It is a cold January morning and Shetland lies buried beneath a deep layer of snow. Trudging home, Fran Hunter's eye is drawn to a vivid splash of colour on the white ground, ravens circling above. It is the strangled body of her teenage neighbour Catherine Ross. The locals on the quiet island stubbornly focus their gaze on one man – loner and simpleton Magnus Tait. But when police insist on opening out the investigation a veil of suspicion and fear is thrown over the entire community. For the first time in years, Catherine's neighbours nervously lock their doors, whilst a killer lives on in their midst.

Publisher's Summary
THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
The one and only autobiography by the iconic Lucille Ball, hailed by TV Guide as the “#1 Greatest TV Star of All Time.”
Love, Lucy is the valentine Lucille Ball left for her fans—a warm, wise, and witty memoir written by Lucy herself. The legendary star of the classic sitcom I Love Lucy was at the pinnacle of her success when she sat down to record the story of her life. No comedienne had made America laugh so hard, no television actress had made the leap from radio and B movies to become one of the world’s best-loved performers. This is her story—in her own words.
The story of the ingenue from Jamestown, New York, determined to go to Broadway, destined to make a big splash, bound to marry her Valentino, Desi Arnaz. In her own inimitable style, she tells of their life together—both storybook and turbulent; intimate memories of their children and friends; wonderful backstage anecdotes; the empire they founded; the dissolution of their marriage. And, with a heartfelt happy ending, her enduring marriage to Gary Morton.
Here is the lost manuscript that her fans and loved ones will treasure. Here is the laughter. Here is the life. Here’s Lucy...
“The comic actress in her own words…intensely moving.” —San Francisco Chronicle

A great book, written by a lovely lady during Hollywood's Heyday... and the House Unamerican Activities Committee. Too bad it only goes to the early 1960s, shortly after her marriage to her second husband. Very well read by her daughter Lucy Arnaz.

I DO Love Lucy!
I thoroughly enjoyed this tape!!! I didn't really enjoy the parts wherein she speaks of ALL the films, etc. she had been involved with. I really liked the autobiography of her life, upbringing,& personality traits that made her the success that she was. I could identify with the persistence, needs, hunger, and determination to succeed! I truly loved the show as a kid and reruns as an adult, and I will still watch them today when I see them advertised on the tv. I WAS surprised at the depth of Desi. I had only heard about his womanizing! He was really intelligent, sensitive, and compassionate about his life, his business dealings, and the people around him. I even enjoyed the other shows after the I Love Lucy series. She was truly a great comedian and a good actress- right up there with Katherine Hepburn!

Pleasant Surprise
I really enjoyed listening to a book Lucille Ball wrote privately that was narrated by her daughter. Her daughter also adds some of her own insight into it which I enjoyed. I always find it interesting to see how many people think Hollywood stars are and what they are actually more like. Whether that be that the star themself thinks or the person writing their bibliography with extensive insight and research.
This was an Audible Daily Deal and I am so glad I snagged it. I finished it in one listen, learned a lot, and have recommended it to several people. One of my favourite books of 2019.
