SHORTLISTED FOR THE ABIA BIOGRAPHY BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD 2024

This is the powerful, untold story of two of the three members of Silverchair, Australia's most awarded musical act. From their beginnings in Ben Gillies' garage, this trio of high school kids from Newcastle, New South Wales, became famous with their smash-hit single 'Tomorrow', setting them on a path to domination of the Australian charts, worldwide touring and fame.

So much has been written about Silverchair over the years but very little has been said by the band's members. In Love & Pain, childhood friends Ben Gillies (drummer) and Chris Joannou (bass player) tell us tales about growing up across the road from each other and starting in Silverchair, wild stories from the peak of their days in the spotlight, and the ups and downs of how their lives have panned out since.

While there are some funny, unforgettable rock 'n' roll stories, there is also all the love and pain that came with being in the band: the cost of fame and intense pressure on two teenagers who had no way of preparing for it; the navigation of their friendships with each other and their relationships with friends and family members; the mistakes they made and the successes they cherished. Gillies and Joannou write with vulnerability and raw and blistering honesty, making for an extraordinary account of a band adored by so many.

Incredibly Eye-opening Read

This book is something I was hoping would come for some time, as there is always another side to every story. By revealing 2 additional narratives to the silverchair story, this book has tied loose ends that left many wondering. The heartache left of a broken childhood friendship is what got me the most and left a sad lingering towards the end. But despite that, everything is said gracefully and with tact. Hopefully this can be the last piece of the puzzle to completely heal from the past.

Amazing

I have been a lifelong Silverchair fan. The music was literally like therapy to me as a teenager and they were my first of many rock shows. This book was a delightful, emotional trip through memory lane where I did not want it to end. I laughed and cried many times. Thank you Ben and Chris for your honesty and being so real with this book. Also, Ben I am so glad you made it through the Edgefest show in Canada 1999 because I was there :) I recommend this book to any fan!!

Welcome To The Closing

Wonderful to hear the backstory behind the legends. I've always wondered what led to Silverchair's untimely demise. This strikes as a love letter,
not only to us fans, but to Mr. Daniel John's himself. If this book doesn't bring about their reunion, only God can.

Pleasantly suprised

I ordered this with extreme skepticism, I've been a Silverchair fan since I was 14, and really thought this book would be a slam towards Dan. But I must say, Ben and Chris were honest, open, and respectful the whole way through. I was in tears more than once and just wanted to say good job Fellas, your children will be proud!!
