Publisher's Summary

"Happily Ever After" wasn't supposed to come with a do-over option. But when my husband of 20 years packs up and heads for greener pastures, and my son heads away to college, that's exactly what my midlife becomes.

A do-over.

This time, though, I plan to do things differently. Age is just a number, after all, and at 40 I'm ready to carve my own path.

Eager for a fresh start, I make a somewhat unorthodox decision and move to a tiny town in the Sierra foothills. I'll be taking care of a centuries-old house that called to me when I was a kid. It's just temporary, I tell myself. It'll just be for a little while.

That is, until I learn what the house really is: something I never would've thought possible.

As my new life begins, a couple of things become immediately clear: Forty isn't too old for adventure. Not by half. It is too old to take crap from anyone, however, or care what people think.

I had no idea how incredibly freeing that could be. Or how dangerous this new life would become.

I have a chance to start again, and this time, I make the rules.

A great start to a fantastic series

I loved this book. It is amazing to have a main character in her forties who is strong, funny and feisty with really interesting characters around her.

Fantastic, but…

Austin’s voice! It sounds too young and scrawny to be a middle aged huge polar bear. I expected gruffness, I guess. Other than that, the narrator’s versions of voice was engaging. I read this book series (the books released to date anyway) and have loved every single second. They only get better from here!

Excellent story that made me laugh hard, read extremely well. Just a few glitches with the recording.

Surprisingly good

A great fantasy. I thought it might be difficult, as a 22-year-old, to identify with a 40-year-old main character, but she couldn't stand living in her parent's cluttered house, either. That was all it took. That, and she was refreshingly human, and not willing to take anyone's crap.

It was also riotously funny in a way that didn't feel forced, and I was enthralled.

I bought it on daily deal, and I don't usually do this, but I finished it today and this month's credit will be going towards book 2.

It's the best book I've read in a while, and I can't recommend it highly enough.

I was skeptical but now have a new series!

Fun trip from reality. it was a pleasant surprise. I found myself finding chores to do so I could reach the end.

I feel your age, bro

I really, really liked this book.

Urban fantasy/Magical Realism whatever you want to call it, it's one of my favourite genres, and this book hit it out of the park.

I enjoyed the fact that the characters were all past their prime because heck, I'm past my prime and reading about characters that are aged is comfortable.

It was much more relatable than the 'chosen one' books about young heroes, or the 20-30 somethings dressed in leather kicking butt and taking names without pain or care in the world.

I will admit that the author did go overboard sometimes with the constant reminder about their ages, and there was the urge to skim some of it, but for some people, it might be reassuring.

The characters were all likable, although Edgar rode the cusp some of the time. Still, I thought it was a really good dynamic, whether they were sorta flirty, or sorta killy towards each other, the connection was there.
I would have liked for the author to go more in-depth with the power of the house. I do not feel like I got the full understanding of how powerful the house is and what the magic that is given to Jess actually entails.
There are very few people I would not recommend this book to, it was just really, really good.

Fun, entertaining, worth a listen!

Well written, love the characters, fast paced and fun. A good light read! I would have loved to give the narration a better review as her character voices were fantastic. I just found the lead character voice a bit annoying until about halfway through when she softened it a little. Also several times the word "draught" pronounced like "ought" when the correct pronunciation is "draft".
