Story
Hot-shot lawyer McKenna Keaton finds herself in hot water with her own law firm when she’s (falsely!) accused of embezzlement. Placed on unpaid leave, she suddenly finds herself with the free time to return home and attend her youngest sister’s wedding activities. But it’s not all fun and games. Waiting back home is shy, nerdy Henry Blumenthal—McKenna’s high school rival for valedictorian who once took three hours to beat her at chess. Scratch that. He’s Hank Blume now, the famed documentarian, Durham, North Carolina’s, darling son.

We met in the least likely of places. It started out innocently enough. I was “ScreenGod”, and she was “Montana”, but of course those weren’t our actual names, just the virtual cloaks we hid behind. Logging in at night and talking to her was my escape - my sanctuary. Her real name was Eden, I’d soon come to find out. From the first time we connected online, I found myself transfixed. She was an addiction. At first, we knew nothing about each other’s real identities...and she was adamant that we keep things that way.

Some people are ordained for greatness. Those people usually have a lot of drama in their life. Drama I happily do without. I live in a forgotten corner of nowhere for a reason: there is safety in anonymity. I have enough problems just trying to get by. But when Kieran, a sinfully sexy demigod at the pinnacle of power, crashes into my life, suddenly my whole world is turned upside down. He’s harboring a deadly secret, one that could destroy all he holds dear. He thinks I’m the key to his salvation, and he wants me to help him claim vengeance. He also wants me with a passion.

Story
Polly, Annie, Elizabeth, Catherine, and Mary-Jane are famous for the same thing, though they never met. What they had in common was the year of their murders: 1888. The person responsible was never identified, but the character created by the press to fill that gap has become far more famous than any of these five women. For more than a century, newspapers have been keen to tell us that "the Ripper" preyed on prostitutes. Not only is this untrue, as historian Hallie Rubenhold has discovered, but it has prevented the real stories of these fascinating women from being told.

Publisher's Summary
"Happily Ever After" wasn't supposed to come with a do-over option. But when my husband of 20 years packs up and heads for greener pastures, and my son heads away to college, that's exactly what my midlife becomes.
A do-over.
This time, though, I plan to do things differently. Age is just a number, after all, and at 40 I'm ready to carve my own path.
Eager for a fresh start, I make a somewhat unorthodox decision and move to a tiny town in the Sierra foothills. I'll be taking care of a centuries-old house that called to me when I was a kid. It's just temporary, I tell myself. It'll just be for a little while.
That is, until I learn what the house really is: something I never would've thought possible.
As my new life begins, a couple of things become immediately clear: Forty isn't too old for adventure. Not by half. It is too old to take crap from anyone, however, or care what people think.
I had no idea how incredibly freeing that could be. Or how dangerous this new life would become.
I have a chance to start again, and this time, I make the rules.
More from the same

Very entertaining!
I approached this story with trepidation because of some of the bad reviews, and because I am generally picky & hard to please when it comes to audiobooks. So my expectations were pretty low. However, I really enjoyed this.
The narrator did a more than passable job of all the different characters and accents, and I enjoyed the storyline and the main character, who even made me laugh out loud at a few points along the way. Yes, the main character maybe does go on a bit too much about her aching joints and popping knees, but it's not really that bad. And yes she's only 40, and from the perspective of someone who is almost 50 (me), her complaints about being "old" seem a bit silly. However, those things were mild and easily forgotten, and outweighed by how entertained I was by this story.
It's a lightweight, humorous take on aging and magic, and I'm definitely going to be listening to the rest of the books in this series right away.
My only real complaint is that the editor (not the audio editor but the actual book editor) didn't do an excellent job. There were definitely a few sentences here and there where adjectives were repeated in the same sentence and the editor should definitely have caught that.

I loved this book, the narrator is great. Great charater voices. I laughed out loud and was on to Book 2 as soon as I completed it. This is my first series with K.F Breene. Good charater development and really interesting. Enough to keep me on the journey with Jess.

I feel your age, bro
I really, really liked this book.
Urban fantasy/Magical Realism whatever you want to call it, it's one of my favourite genres, and this book hit it out of the park.
I enjoyed the fact that the characters were all past their prime because heck, I'm past my prime and reading about characters that are aged is comfortable.
It was much more relatable than the 'chosen one' books about young heroes, or the 20-30 somethings dressed in leather kicking butt and taking names without pain or care in the world.
I will admit that the author did go overboard sometimes with the constant reminder about their ages, and there was the urge to skim some of it, but for some people, it might be reassuring.
The characters were all likable, although Edgar rode the cusp some of the time. Still, I thought it was a really good dynamic, whether they were sorta flirty, or sorta killy towards each other, the connection was there.
I would have liked for the author to go more in-depth with the power of the house. I do not feel like I got the full understanding of how powerful the house is and what the magic that is given to Jess actually entails.
There are very few people I would not recommend this book to, it was just really, really good.

Super funny and refreshing!
This is the first book I’m read by this author and it was terrific! I literally busted out laughing many time. The narrator was absolutely fabulous and I think was a big part of why I liked this book so much. I’m definitely looking forward to “reading” the rest of the books in the series.

Absolutely a wonderful series
K. F. Breene brings us a delightful cast of quirky, mature characters, not only dealing with magical mayhem but with mid-life. Nicole Poole brings their personalities to life with her excellent narration.
It is so rare to have characters who are not in their 20's or 30's and unrealistically beautiful. I love that the main character embraces and acknowledges her mid-life reality.
I hope we see a saga in this series and not just a trilogy.

NOoOOooo! It's Over
WOW, just wow. where to begin.
First of all it's over. 😭😭😭 WHEN is the next one coming out, because I will be hoovering that one too.
So, first thought about Magical Midlife Madness is holy cats it is hilarious!! So many times I laughed out loud and caused side eyes from my husband and my kids. At one point I was laughing so hard I was crying and crossing my legs so I wouldn't piddle myself.
Second thought is that it is an amazing story! I love how powerful the main character is. She might second guess herself here and there, but she knows who she is, and she is amazing.
Thirdly, Niamh is hilarious! And the play between Mr. Tom, Niamh, and Edgar is extremely awesome/hilarious/sweet.
All that being said I LOVED this book, I would recommend to anyone, and cannot wait for the next book!!

Good God she isn’t THAT old!
I enjoyed the story line and it’s refreshing to read something fun with a middle aged woman as the heroine. However...I was really put off by the incessant reminders of her age. Popping bones, droopy skin, stretch marks and on and on through the WHOLE book. The defining character of a woman shouldn’t be her age. I would have enjoyed the story more if there had been an occasional reference instead of a constant reminder. 40 isn’t THAT old for Pete’s sake!

LMAO everyone that is middle age need to listen
Cant wait for the next one in the series, I laughed my head off and all my husband could do was ask what are you laughing at.
Wives that been married for a while can totally relate to this main character. Excellent story and excellent narrator. Love it
I even went back and listen to it a second time and I normally do not give out reviews easily.

A house to watch out for.
Great story, enveloping, making one want more. Mind the begonias. The first in a new series, unfortunately the rest aren't up for preorder yet. This story is fun, funny and amazing. The world is amazing, it really draws you in. The world is very well crafted, quite believable.

Cute story, a little light on character development
First, narrator did a good job with voicing the different characters but spoke too fast. I listened at 0.75 speed. A bit too much angst about being age 40 by the main character. Beginning was slow, almost returned the book but stuck with it. Wish I could have borrowed from library instead of buying.

Magically brilliant!
What a breath of fresh midlife air! As usual the narrator, Nicole Poole, did not disappoint in her delivery of another wonderful tale.
This was my first K.F. breene book and I can’t wait to get the rest of these in my ears! The story itself is amazing and made more so with a great narrator.
