Publisher's Summary

A princess isn’t supposed to fall for an evil sorceress. But in this “bewitching and fascinating” (Tamora Pierce) retelling of “Sleeping Beauty”, true love is more than a simple fairy tale.

“Walter’s spellbinding debut is for all the queer girls and women who’ve been told to keep their gifts hidden and for those yearning to defy gravity.” (O: The Oprah Magazine)

Once upon a time, there was a wicked fairy who, in an act of vengeance, cursed a line of princesses to die. A curse that could only be broken by true love’s kiss.

You’ve heard this before, haven’t you? The handsome prince. The happily ever after.

Utter nonsense.

Let me tell you, no one in Briar actually cares about what happens to its princesses. Not the way they care about their jewels and elaborate parties and charm-granting elixirs. I thought I didn’t care, either.

Until I met her.

Princess Aurora. The last heir to Briar’s throne. Kind. Gracious. The future queen her realm needs. One who isn’t bothered that I am Alyce, the Dark Grace, abhorred and feared for the mysterious dark magic that runs in my veins. Humiliated and shamed by the same nobles who pay me to bottle hexes and then brand me a monster. Aurora says I should be proud of my gifts. That she...cares for me. Even though a power like mine was responsible for her curse.

But with less than a year until that curse will kill her, any future I might see with Aurora is swiftly disintegrating - and she can’t stand to kiss yet another insipid prince. I want to help her. If my power began her curse, perhaps it’s what can lift it. Perhaps together we could forge a new world.

Nonsense again. Because we all know how this story ends, don’t we? Aurora is the beautiful princess. And I -

I am the villain.

Couldn't stop listening.

This book is exactly what I was looking for. LGBT+ representation, fantasy, magic, overcoming oppression, strong women! A somewhat familiar story but unique enough to stand alone. A few predictable parts but it ends strong. I am very pleased with the ending and fingers crossed there's more malice to come. 20 stars!

Don’t listen while driving

I don’t even know where to begin with this review. First let me start with, yes I can’t wait for the next book. This is a very complex and emotionally challenging book. I almost feel like I’m in an abusive relationship with it. One moment we’re going through the “nice to meet you and learn more about you” phase and you sound a little beaten down and here let me help you carry your baggage to the “meet and greet the friends and family” and now I know why you’re so messed up but you still have that je ne sais quois about you. Then the abuse begins and you’re starting to piss me off. Next is the drowning. There are moments of reprieve but those are far and few between. By the end I’m so immersed I stop breathing until I realize there’s a second book on the horizon. The water recedes, my hope is back and I think maybe 🤔 we can make it.
Honestly the author did such a fabulous job of “authoring” and the narrator did a wonderful job of helping her flesh out the characters that half the time I wanted to pull the protagonist turned antagonist straight from the proverbial pages and slam her on the table! Okay it was all the characters at one time or another. I was so angry through most of this book that it’s good I wasn’t driving or I’m sure there would have been serious road rage on my part. I’m a huge fan of HEAs and hate cliffhangers but here we are. One cliffhanger (check), HEA (?) who knows but as I stated earlier I’m hopeful.

Wow! Fantastic!

Firstly, if you are looking for a HEA in this book, you will be disappointed. Wait for Heather Walter’s next book maybe it will be there — maybe it will be a trilogy. 😘 I loved the book, the imagination of turning an old story into new. Plus, being lesfic made it even better! I would give this book more of a YA feel, even with one sex scene. Definitely recommend this book and the Narrator: Ann Marie Gideon fabulously brought this book to life.

Sweet Revenge!

I love and hate the way this story ended, but it was oh so sweet revenge. I'll be furious if there's not a sequel, but it's still an amazing novel without one.

It was a decent story

It was an enjoyable enough read, until it got to the end and the story seemed to completely unravel.

Fistly, imo, there was an insane amount of exposition in the first half of the book that could have been hidden within the story or added to a preface as if it was the beginning of a storybook. It really slogged down the story for me and made it difficult to not tune out. And there was too little character development, but given what happened in the end that didn't actually matter anyway.

Second, there were whole sections of plot that started and were discarded behind the scenes by the characters, or were abruptly aborted moments after taking place within a scene.

Lastly, The final chapters read like an overly gory revenge fantasy and the turn came out of nowhere. The entire book seemed to be about being your own person, discovering who you truly are and rising from the ashes of the opinions of others. But the end negates the entire experience.

There is so much I want to say about how incredible this book is but words really don’t do it justice. Just listen to it. Narrator is absolutely phenomenal... I cannot wait for the second book!!!!!

Great story!

This story is wonderful! At first it seemed a bit simple and not as detailed and intricate as I had hoped but then the subtle little bits of the story twinned together and I loved it! I hope there is more to come with this storyline! The narrator has an amazing voice as well! One thing though is that sometimes I couldn't tell if she was talking as the "narrator" or the main character. Just every once in a while though, so not too bad!

Great Listen

The narrator did a fantastic job of keeping up with the characters and adding life to the story. The characters develop well through the book. Definitely worth a listen. Can't wait for the next in the series.
