Publisher's Summary

What are the upper limits of human potential?
At the intersection of flow states, mystical experiences, peak performance, and psychedelics lies a mysterious space of possibility. In Mapping Cloud Nine, best-selling author and award-winning journalist Steven Kotler takes us on a heady thrill ride through the history of human potential - and how what we’ve learned so far might unlock even greater levels of creativity, performance, and meaning in our lives.

From Nietzsche to now - a tour of human consciousness

In this six-part audio program, Kotler bridges science and spirituality to explore how our understanding of peak experiences has evolved over time - from early inquiries into altered and mystical states; to the birth of positive psychology and research on high performers; to pioneering studies on meditation and near-death experiences; and into current explorations of psychedelics, flow states, and technological breakthroughs.

A brilliant synthesizer and gifted storyteller, Kotler paints a compelling portrait of our greatest human potential, inspiring us to leverage this growing body of research and step into new realms of possibility.

  • The evolutionary impulse for altered states of mind - psychedelics throughout time
  • The neurobiology of flow states, mystical experiences, and hallucinations
  • The spiritual path and the high-performance path - are they one and the same?

Provocative

If you are highly spiritual, or otherwise a believer in flow state psychology, this book is for you. Kotler provides a fantastic overview of where research and forward thinking ideas currently stand in these fields. Buyer beware: his style of delivery is relaxed and more like a clean versatile with his listeners. I relished in it, but I understand it may not be for everyone. 5 thumbs up.... er, 2

Inspiring

Great book with cutting edge ideas about what is possible. It made me want to go deeper into this fascinating aspect of human potential. I really enjoyed the style of presentation by the author. It made me feel like I was in a university setting listening to a lecture. I miss those days. I will definitely be reading more of his work and referenced works.

Absolutely incredible

If you’re at all interested in psychology, flow, neuroscience, or peak performance, do yourself a favor and listen to this audiobook. It’s an absolutely fascinating and honest look at where we’re currently at in terms of real data and research in these subjects. I plan on listening to it again at least 10 times.

Absolutely blown away.

this is not a book

this is not a book.
it's a well written series of episodes.

having read kotler's prior books, found only 20% of new ideas.

on the plus side, I appreciated his clear and compelling summary of how psichology faced the question of flow.

I had high hopes for this book but...

I really had high hopes for this book but it is terrible! The author should also not be doing this in his own (extremely annoying) voice. Sorry, but I just can't sit through this. The information is so jumbled that, for me, no points hit home at all. I just cannot listen to this anymore.

Fascinating Blend

Excited to read more by S.K. he is helping to find the balance between the spiritual & the scientific. I have reservations of ‘there being a there, there’ related to balancing these two...as science is predicting on facts & figures. Not on the esoteric or ineffable.

This narrative is really impressive in pointing us towards a path where we equanimously flow with one foot in the scientific & one in the spiritual. Following in the footsteps of giants like Da Vinci & Einstein.

I’ll leave it here for now.

Thank you for this. I particularly always appreciate when the author takes the time to be the one who is recorded for the audiobook

Brain Candy

Mystical experiences meet science and have a baby - that's my nature and the nature of this book. I love it! Listened twice in a row - that's the first for me :)

Steven Kotler is the GOAT

Steven provides an innovative timeline for the comparison of flow psychology and philosophy. This timeline funnels into spiritual ideology and the more recent studies being done on altered states. This audiobook combines the knowledge that was presented in his books: The Rise of Superman, Bold, Abundance, and Stealing Fire, with an added bonus at the end (spirituality addressed by science), 100000% Worth the price of admission.
