Publisher's Summary

Carlos Ruiz Zafon's haunting gothic mystery, which has long been a cult classic in Spain and is now an international best seller.

"We all have a secret buried under lock and key in the attic of our soul. This is mine."

Fifteen-year-old Oscar Drai meets the strange Marina while he's exploring an old quarter of Barcelona. She leads Oscar to a cemetery, where they watch a macabre ritual that occurs on the last Sunday of each month. At exactly 10 o'clock in the morning, a woman shrouded in a black velvet cloak descends from her carriage to place a single rose on an unmarked grave.

When Oscar and Marina decide to follow her, they begin a journey that transports them to a forgotten postwar Barcelona - a world of aristocrats and actresses, inventors and tycoons - and reveals a dark secret that lies waiting in the mysterious labyrinth beneath the city streets.

beautiful

I can see why Zafon favors this one. It feels personal.
It was a gruesome, revolting, bizarre and honestly, kind of heartbreaking, part mystery, part horror, part bildungsroman. And it works. It's a beautiful read.

Spectacular & moving. Zafón true to form.

Since Carlos Ruiz Zafón's death a month or so ago, I've decided to slowly make my way through all his work, starting with a reread of Cemetery. This is my first Zafón book not of the Forgotten Books series and I'm happy to report I absolutely loved it. I'm starting to think everything this man touched is just gold. This book had the same wistfully bittersweet qualities as his main series and so if you like that, you'll definitely love this book the same way since it used the same idea as Shadow of the Wind. If you're a Guy Gavriel Kay fan, Zafón is the closest author in my opinion!

Hopefully you guys pick this book up and love it as much as I do.
