About this listen

Mage Alex Verus is hanging on by a thread in the ninth urban fantasy novel from the national best-selling author of Burned.

When Mage Alex Verus ends up with a position on the Light Council, no one is happy, least of all him. But Alex is starting to realize that if he wants to protect his friends, he'll need to become a power player himself. His first order of business is to track down dangerous magical items unleashed into the world by Dark Mages.

But when the Council decides they need his help in negotiating with the perpetrators, Alex will have to use all his cunning and magic to strike a deal - and stop the rising tension between the Council, the Dark Mages, and the adept community from turning into a bloodbath.

This iteration of Alex Verus’s adventures put him and those he loves in greater danger than ever before, with his old enemy and master getting one step closer to dominating mage society.

After the events of the previous book, Alex’s troubles start coming to a head. Not only are Richard and his cronies working to recruit disillusioned adepts, but the Council is testing Alex’s limits, and Anne’s dark self begins to make more of an appearance. Having always been a fan of Anne, it was great to see her arc and growth in this book.

I’m coming to adore these characters more and more, and after this intense ending, I can’t wait to read what comes next!

Great action and characters

I am convinced Benedict Jaca hates Verus. He has written Verus into an impossible scenario and frankly it will reach point, no resolution will make sense or be satisfactory

It is sad because he has created something special, and with so much potential. But has systematically tortured his main character, over powered his villains and has not given us a reprieve from all the Hardships he puts Verus through.

I am on book 10 now, and it might be my last....gonna take my gate stone and gate out

Better than Book 8, but not much better
