About this listen

Mark’s Gospel from the widely acclaimed modern literary classic The New Testament in Scots now available as an audio digital download for the first time. Tom Fleming's reading brings out the poetry, wit, and humanity of William Lorimer's translation in a way which speaks to everyone. Lorimer (1885-1967) immersed himself in the Scots language from childhood, learning the rich Angus dialect of his locality. He devoted the last decade of his life to translating the New Testament into Scots.

W. L. Lorimer's late-life labour of love was his translation of the New Testament from Greek to the Scots leid. His son maintained the project when Lorimer passed away and prepared the manuscripts for publication. The result was this now-classic contribution to the Scots language and letters. What a joy to listen to these words rendered accurately, fluidly and dramatically by the late, superb Scottish actor Tom Fleming, who recorded the four Gospels for the Lorimer Trust. I would consider Fleming's readings of the Gospels to be edifying listening for all with an interest in Scots-language literature.

Wonderful Scots prose in the Scots leid
