Disappointing

A disappointment. Some of the stories bear no resemblance to a good Agatha Christie story.

Good read.

I enjoyed reading these short stories VERY MUCH. I hope to read more shortly. I had missed Miss Marple a great deal. Although some of the styles are a bit different than Agatha Christie's, they are still extremely interesting and enjoyable to read.

Hit or miss Marple

Miss Marple is my favorite Agatha Christie character. These authors attempt to recreate the charm and complexity of the original mysteries to varying degrees of success. Some only use the characters from the original stories to establish a setting but do not have the tightness of plot one would expect. Others better utilize Miss Marple’s strengths—her attention to detail and her use of the village parallel to better effect. I guess my biggest complaint is that occasionally the character acts contrary to how we expect her to behave.

I often listen to the original stories over and over. I doubt I will listen to these stories again.

The quality of the performances are excellent. I look forward to listening to these narrators again. I will also look for other stories by these writers. But, maybe not any more about Miss Marple.

Should of Passed

This was dreadful, unless you like Miss Marple does yoga. They took some liberties, you her going to NYC twice. The nephew, Raymond, was in almost every story.

The only ones that were interesting and similar to what Marple should be we're the Christmas one by Ruth Ware and the Elly Griffiths murder at the villa Rosa. One of the stories she not even in it until the end.

Really, a mixed review

I'd like to say that pretty much all the stories seem to be fun to listen to, but except for the first one (that almost could have been written by Agatha, herself) they all fall just a little bit short of capturing the essence of Christie's portrayal of Miss Marple. Some reflect a character just a *little bit* too forward, or modern, or involved than Christie's Miss Marple (seemed to be--to me).

That said, I was not unhappy listening to them--they were mostly pretty good little short stories using a much-loved character. Nobody should expect this set of stories to exactly duplicate the original Miss Marple--and I didn't--but I had hoped that the authors would be more careful about not falling into the trap of using more modern points of views than Christie would have had. (For example, in one story, Miss Marple enters into a brief exchange about the sexual overtones of Freudian theory--something that the original probably would not have done. She would not have been shocked--but neither would she have commented). I am not disappointed. This collection is just about as good as could be done by an assortment of good mystery writers. It cannot be easy to get into someone else's mind or writing style to create something close to a century after the first were written. I applaud them for the stories they turned out. And for the most part, the narration was also quite good.

Stories were of uneven quality

I enjoyed most of these stories. One of them, "Miss Marple Takes Manhattan," was truly bad. I took the author nearly all of the story to just set up the (silly) plot. It was boring beyond measure. The one where Miss Marple doesn't appear until the end is not really a Miss Marple story--it should have been omitted. But many of the stories were interesting and fun. I just wish that the editor had exercised better judgement (one must use the British spelling here) in the selection.

Not even close to Christie

Buy this audio book if you want to understand why Agatha Christie sold many millions of her books.
Because she is so superior to all other crime writers being in a league of her own.

Who is this person pretending to be Miss Marple?

I slogged through the first three stories, but that was all I could manage. I suppose that one of the stories I didn't get to would have had Aunt Jane in go-go boots, a miniskirt and smoking unfiltered camels while fighting crime in the Marvel universe. Not at all our Victorian lady.

I enjoyed the stories. A few much more than others but over all it quenched my need for new Miss Marple stories.

A mixed bag

I'm someone who doesn't like to try to figure out the mystery before it ends. Having said that, I figured out a quarter of these mysteries without even trying. Some of them were excellent. However most of them or middle of the road. And, unfortunately, a good number of them suffer from the cardinal sin of a mystery: being predictable.

Great fun, and well written

I was pleased to discover that this collection does real justice to the Miss Maple character. The plots, characters, and crimes all fall well within the Status Christie rubric. Give them a try.

New Instant Classics

Delightfully fresh vignettes in the Christie canon. Casually more relevant and diverse than the originals and still true to form, with tropes like untrustworthy narration, ephemeral alibis, and unsympathetic victims galore. Also, possibly less actual death and violence than the originals? Settle in, you will probably read these in a single sitting. <3
