From the heart

It’s clear that Melissa poured her heart into this book. It leaves you feeling inspired to action yet proud of all you’ve done and who are. It gives you the courage to believe you can conquer anything. Shows you how to love yourself when you fall, because we all do. Melissa is authentically beautiful and knowledgeable and I love how she shares her story with us.

Please don’t listen to this book if you have an eating disorder.

Over all I get that this book is written to dim the inner critic within and I think that was great. But the dieting advice at the end really triggered me as someone recovering from an eating disorder. She says at the beginning of the chapter ‘I’m not going to tell how to eat’ then goes on to tell you how eat. There’s also so much focus on idealizing the thin ‘healthy’ body. I know this book was written from a place of love and Melissa’s story is remarkable but I found her to be to influenced by diet and wellness culture.

Not what I expected

Perhaps I could have read the description better, but I thought this would be a novel about mastering your "assertive side"; however, it is meant to address our inner "mean girl" - the one that leads us to negative thoughts and questioning of our self worth. Respectfully, I think this novel might be better suited to a younger audience, and tends to provide a lot of platitudes about "love over fear". Admittedly, I couldn't get into it past 1.5 hours, so there may have been more in store if I had continued listening. I think the concepts were great, but didn't find there was enough substance to keep my interest and it was a bit overly optimistic for my taste.
