Publisher's Summary

Are you ready, Max? If anyone's going to help me do this, it's you.

The heart-warming tale of a life-saving friendship.

In 2006, a traumatic car accident changed Kerry Irving's life forever.

Suffering from severe neck and back injuries, Kerry was unemployed and housebound, struggling with depression and even thoughts of suicide. He went from cycling over 600 miles a month to becoming a prisoner in his own home.

With hope all but lost, Kerry's wife encouraged him to go on a short walk to the local shop. In the face of unbearable pain and overwhelming panic, he persevered and, along the way, met an adorable yard dog named Max. As the Spaniel peered up through the railings, Kerry found comfort and encouragement in his soulful brown eyes. This chance encounter marked a turning point in both their lives.

In Max, Kerry found comfort and motivation, and in Kerry, Max found someone to care for him. This is their remarkable, inspiring story.

Heartwarming, inspiring

I stumbled across Max and Kerry et al, during lockdown in Canada and was immediately caught up in the sheer joy Max, Paddy and Harry have for every moment of their daily lives. Watching the videos (I'm working when Kerry is live-streaming, so watch the vids later in my day), I've come to appreciate both Kerry's story, and his knowledge of the countryside, woodlands, and the mountains and hills of Cumbria, which I visited at weekends during my late teen years, clambering up the hills with the gay abandon of youth, and walking beautiful paths, some 40 years ago. I need to thank Kerry, for helping me through being stuck at home, with hubby, for some 16 months now, lifting me out of the unending grind, twice daily. You have made my life more than bearable, with both your soothing voice, your educational banter, and your joyful spaniels. Thank you.

Slow beginning

The beginning is a little slow but then you learn about Max for the first time and your hooked. I had to read (hear) the book on breaks, at dinner table (after getting the family caught up) and then right before bed. I was in those fields, playing in the water and meeting all the people with Max. One of the best stories ever. But best of all, I had my black and white springer spaniel right by my side. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Man's best friend

A delightful book for everyone. Tough childhood and hard young life but then the accident that almost ruined a life.Saved by a chance meeting with a dog named Max and the rest is history. Wonderful tale of a special dog but even more the affirmation that dogs are a true gift to humans.

Love Springer Spaniels

Kerry is quite candid about his struggles and that helps everyone.
We have a Springer who we adore and this tells a story of how very sweet this breed is. Although ours is definitely not as calm as Max.

A lovely ending to sad beginnings

The story was moving, compelling and vital until the dog become integrated into the author's life, after which most content was filler. The chapters about life with disability were however excellent, as was the point that speaking openly about genuine emotions provides an opening we all desperately yearn for.

Uplifting. Entertaining. Simple. Sweet.

Excellent storytelling. Top-notch narrating. Absolutely loved this simple real life story. Reminds me that every life has something to offer. We don’t have to be flashy and over the top to make a difference. Thanks Kerry & Max.

Could've Been Good with an Editor

I hate to say this, but here goes: This story could've . . . should've been a great story, and I am sure the author had a horrendous childhood. BUT this is not the way to tell it. I could not muster much empathy for him as it droned on and on, repeating the sad tale of how he wanted to be with his brothers, but felt like he was abandoning his mother. Some people seem to wallow in their pain, and others climb on out of it, and begin to look for solutions. In telling a story like this, I think less is MORE. Focusing on the victories and how Max helped to heal him would have kept me listening.

What a story!

Max really was the miracle dog. I started following his journey on Facebook about 2 years ago with my Mum who had been an avid follower for a long time prior. This book shares some great behind the scenes stories of life with max and Kerry’s journey too. It was a wonderful book.

I started listening to this a few days after Max had crossed the rainbow bridge… so a few tears were shed too.
