Publisher's Summary
A character so outrageous he could only have come from the ingenious imagination of Elmore Leonard, lewd, lecherous, law-bending Florida jurist Judge Robert "Maximum Bob" Gibbs has been judged guilty by a grudge-bearing malefactor and sentenced to death - by alligator, if necessary. Maximum Bob is a delightfully dark classic thriller from "the greatest crime writer of our time, perhaps ever" (New York Times Book Review), and any listener who loved getting gleefully lost in the criminal mayhem of Get Shorty, Rum Punch, Out of Sight, The Hot Kid, or any number of the inimitable Leonard's numerous crime fiction masterworks will get maximum enjoyment out of this one.

How I Remember
As a retired from a career in law-enforcement, I happened to meet Elmore Leaonard when he was researching this very book. That in and of itself was a pretty cool experience. He was the stereotypical author with his gray beard, patched elbows, and smoking pipe. I felt I was meeting a description of an author from one of his books.
Having said that I had actually forgotten about this book and had not actually read it until recently. It is not exactly a tour de force, but it has its moments. Typically Leonard, the book is not going to light up your best book meter, unless you are a huge (Leonard can do no wrong) reader. It is not long however, and I did enjoy it. Perhaps it helped that I recognized the locations and even some of the characters, or whom I presumed they were. Perhaps that clouded my judgment, perhaps not. All in all, if you like Elmore Leonard you will probably like the book. And Wendy, if you’re out there, I do remember you saying one of the characters was supposed to be based on you, but I couldn’t find it. Cheers!

Formula
Story lacked any surprises. Powerful old man chasing younger women somewhat work connected. Very predictable.

Good but a bit darker than expected
I felt this book didn’t have the same quirkiness as others by this author. The characters weren’t as interesting or layered but more black and white.

great entertainment
Good fast moving story original plot original characters I really enjoyed it. I like that the story keeps moving and keeps moving quickly and ends up in kind of a surprising place.

Kind of fun
This is the first book by Elmore Leonard that I have read. It was an enjoyable read on the whole, but the story gave me a sense of not quite being one story. I think it may reflect life better than many other books, where everything is neatly tied together at the end. This one left a lot of threads snapping in the wind so to speak, which is not necessarily bad, but it felt like it could have gone on, more or less indefinitely. There was no complete closure, just a partial story resolved and that left me somewhat unsatisfied.
But on the whole, quite worth my time.

Vulgar and ridiculous
Great performance by narrator.
However, the story was ridiculous, nonsensical, and filled w disgusting scenarios, and many, many F bombs.
