Heroes and villains created new epics and were forgotten when their successors appeared. This was the way of the Infinite World. Now a student at Wurthaven, Will is confronted with the truth of the present. The powerful magic embodied by wizards like his grandfather is but a distant memory. Though the practice of the current day is timid and uninspired, Will needs the knowledge that’s preserved and managed by the college. At every turn he finds that sorcery is supreme, while wizards are trained merely to assist and support those who hold the real power - a power based on an evil so deep that few who are living know the truth of its foundation.

Story
The ancient magic of wizards was anything but dark. It was the enlightenment that lifted humanity from the squalor of superstition, and the worship of fell spirits and capricious gods, but those days are gone. The shining glory of the sorcerers burned away the subtlety of wisdom, replacing it with easy power, held only in the hands of the elite - a new age built upon the elemental supremacy of aristocrats and the ignorance of the masses.

Half a millennium ago, in a desperate attempt to defeat the Ithonian Empire, Kanderon Crux and her allies banished the city of Imperial Ithos from Anastis. Her dread weapon, the Exile Splinter, even erased the memory of its location from the universe. Now it's returning and bringing the Exile Splinter back with it. The great powers of the continent are desperately hunting for the lost city, knowledge lost even to Kanderon herself. None know what ancient Ithonian weapons and enchantments might still be found in the ruins, but the Exile Splinter alone would be a prize to justify war.

Publisher's Summary
When Jack Vance's grandfather is murdered, his dying words are to get Jack to promise to attend Darkthorn Academy.
Jack doesn't like it, but he'll do what is necessary to honor the man who raised him. But surviving Darkthorn Academy won't be easy. Jack will have to make alliances, learn to harness magic, and face dangerous enemies - both alive and dead. If he's lucky, he might just make it to second year.
Darkthorn Academy is a coming-of-age fantasy adventure with gamelit aspects, including a slightly overpowered MC, a dragon companion, and a team of adventurers. It’s inspired by games like Skyrim, Diablo 2 and Fallout.

It's good but the writing could be better
I'm a little ignorant of the writers background, I won't pretend as if I know but, the writing, in my opinion, could've been much better. I'll avoid spoilers for this review for anybody thinking about buying the book.
I like the story itself, more the concept than anything, but I feel like a lot is rushed, major things that could've been in more detail that would've expanded on the whole story and the characters and character development, especially at the start.
Other things is that some things that happened felt as if it wasn't thought through properly, as if the writer was writing the book and suddenly decided to add something minor or major that drastically changes things somehow for the better.
Overall I still like the book and I'll still get the second one and listen to it but it's quite a few flaws in my opinion that sort of put me off as to wanting to listen to it more. If you like this type of book, please feel free to listen to it, especially if it only costs a credit or so.
Bit of a spoiler at the end here so be warned
I felt throughout the story, nothing TRULY bad could happen to the main characters, they all had the thickest plot armor, no matter how bad something may seem, they profit from it like crazy and I feel it takes away a lot of the suspense of intense moments.

Ok… but not the best
The Good:
The story is a great premise...
The Bad:
The writing in this book isn’t the best, and at times the characters seem way too synchronized in their thinking. By the third book, it seems as if the author has lost all motivation, and it shows in his writing.
Sorry, I know this is very harsh. But I want to give an accurate review of how I feel about this book.

Good Story. Ok Narration.
I have listened to the first 3 books in this series and have come to the realization that I enjoy the book but feel the narrator misses the mark. The book borrows ideas from several similar series' to this one but makes them their own in an entertaining way. I do feel it's worth mentioning that the narrator misses the mark with how the characters present themselves. A multi century dragon somehow sounds like an old lady while some of the main characters don't always seem to reflect what the author was trying to present in Narration. Overall still an enjoyable listen but could be better with different narration.

Great Introduction to LitRPG
Very PG. Light on stats. I'd say it's suitable for ages 10 and up. MC is a good role model. This series just has all my favorite elements packed in and it still manages to flow nicely. You don't get bogged down with overdone emotional content or other annoying traits. Progression is steady, comfortable and fun. Not dark. Secondary dramaless romance. Contains elements of cultivation, town building and overcoming racial prejudice.

Hard to listen to.
Very noticeable and frequent pauses through the audio. It's like the narrator needed moments between voices, and however they spliced the audio back together they left chunks of time between them.

I can't finish this.
I think there is a good story in here somewhere. I want it to be there but between the awkward audio pauses (idk if that was the speaker or an editor), lack of character tone/inflection and surface level writing I can't find it. I was on chapter 15, saw there was 12 hours left and just can't bring myself to listen to the rest.
This book needs to be taken out of production, worked on for another year and reprinted.

I was enjoying this book 5/5 and then almost halfway through jack and his friends fail 1 class out of like 7 and for some dumb reason that is grounds for expulsion?? What on earth kind of school runs like that?? The logic and world building is subpar in this book but it can still be enjoyable.
