Publisher's Summary

The first official Minecraft novel! In the tradition of iconic adventures like Robinson Crusoe and Treasure Island, the number one New York Times best-selling author of World War Z tells the story of a hero - stranded in the world of Minecraft - who must unravel the secrets of a mysterious island in order to survive.

Washed up on a beach, the lone castaway looks around the shore. Where am I? Who am I? And why is everything made of blocks? But there isn't much time to soak up the sun. It's getting dark, and there's a strange new world to explore!

The top priority is finding food. The next is not becoming food. Because there are others out there on the island...like the horde of zombies that appear after night falls. Crafting a way out of this mess is a challenge like no other. Who could build a home while running from exploding creepers, armed skeletons, and an unstoppable tide of hot lava? Especially with no help except for a few makeshift tools and sage advice from an unlikely friend: a cow.

In this world, the rules don't always make sense, but courage and creativity go a long way. There are forests to explore, hidden underground tunnels to loot, and undead mobs to defeat. Only then will the secrets of the island be revealed.

Two editions, two narrators, one thrilling story. Enjoy this version read by Jack Black, and then be sure to check out the other available version narrated by Samira Wiley.

Fun read for a bored Minecraft player

This book brings story to the Minecraft universe. Mind you, this was made many many updates ago so don't expect to see everything in the game. The beginning was a bit dragging, especially if you already know most of the game. But afterwards it tells a great story. And honestly, it made me go back to the game, create a new world, and start from scratch just like The Island.

Wait for a sale

I don’t usually do reviews but I felt I needed to with this one. I love minecraft. I love rpg stories. I was very excited to get this book and read by jack black! He’s my all time favourite actor! But he’s the best part about this book. The rest. Not so good. The story was very simple. Nothing too exciting until the author writes about the chicken massacre. First off. Rpg book on a game. He’s fighting ghouls and zombies and skeletons daily but there was more detail on him killing chickens he raised then anything about the fighting with spiders and the like. Then coupled with how it was all about morals and what was ethically right. It felt very much like the author was a vegetarian and wanted to push that on gameplay and readers who are just looking for a good story. This pops up over and over. Kill to live but don’t kill the animals. Animals are friends not food. However things like monsters and witches are not included in this because they are bad mobs. It was very confusing when your trying to just enjoy listening about the game and game world but the main character can’t even make leather armour because we cannot kill a cow. The rest of the book was about personal growth which is fine. But then you get hit with how your biggest regret is your own conscious when you do something wrong. It’s a total mixed bag that I’ve never been hit with when reading or listening to a story like this before and really I don’t feel anyone should have to be worried about food choices because you wanna listen to a story about playing a game. I have no issue when it’s a deep story with plenty of things to ponder but a simple story about a guy in a game world struggling to live and prosper it was a bit much. So. I give the book two out of ten. Story was true to game. But they fell very short on potential when you feel the author was pushing a different agenda Of his own to make it feel deeper over what the game really is. The voice acting. Ten outta ten. Jack black is a great reader and so relaxing to listen too.

Max Brooks and Jack Black does it get any better..

It's a short but very enjoyable story. Jack Black does a great job narrating it. As a fan of minecraft I really didn't know what to expect. It was a good story that reminded me of all the fun I had when I first started playing the game. It's got the joy of figuring out crafting recipes, and the discovery of new items and areas. I highly recommend this to any fan of the game.

My three boys and I loved Jack Black's narration!

The story was laid out perfectly for the games actual progression, so it was fun to be able to identify with the character and understand each aspect that occurred. My oldest is 12, my middle son is 10, and my youngest is 6 and as there mom I have played the game together and found Mr. Black's narration to enrich the story line even more; we are really hoping he narrates the next one. Thank you!

Should make a sequel.

I want to give jack black a high five for this. It feels like an amazing roleplay perspective of someone playing minecraft and getting into the game over time, while making some subtle jokes about the player. Max Brooks brings in a great survival mindset and lessons as well.

Jack Black slays narration

Jack Black makes this story a treat for kids and adults alike. My 6 and 4 year olds love Minecraft and they can’t get enough of this story. They have listened to it at least 10 times all the way through and continue to ask for it. My husband and I both enjoyed listening to it as well. If your kid likes Minecraft- you can’t go wrong with this story!
