An Enemies-to-Lovers Second Chance Billionaire Romance

My one-night stand.
A ruthless bastard.
A heartless billionaire.

The man who ruled his empire with a cold head and an even colder heart. And most importantly, my son’s father. Except, he wasn’t aware of that little fact. To the media, Byron Ashford is a Billionaire King. To me, he’s a reminder of the hottest, most forbidden, night of my life. And my biggest mistake.

I hadn’t seen him in years, and hoped we’d never cross paths again.

But then, my best-laid plans always seem to go astray. Now, I need his help to bail me out of trouble. He’s a billionaire and I’m just a broke, debt-riddled surgeon.

Against my better judgment, I sought him out. It should have been easy, in and out. Except, nothing with Byron Ashford was ever easy. He refuses to hand out free favors. And the price for his help?

My freedom. Literally.

He wants to shackle me to him with a marriage I don’t want then throw away the key.

His demands are scandalous. His rules are dangerous for my heart.

It was supposed to be a mutually beneficial deal, but nothing about Byron is ever that simple. Once he slips the ring onto my finger, the rules change.

His demands grow. He no longer just wants to own my body. He also wants my heart and soul. But I’m not that young, naive woman anymore.

Too bad this billionaire forgot one thing. Nobody can own your heart unless you give it freely.

And this time, I’m not blinded by his smile and especially not by his lies.

This is my second time reading a book by Eva Winners, and while I enjoyed it more than the previous listen I attempted, I'm starting to think this author just isn't for me.

I feel like the summary massively oversold the ‘Marriage of Convenience’ plot (which is what I bought the book for). Odette and Byron don't get married until around the remaining five hours of the book. This is a 12 hour audiobook and they don't get married until roughly seven hours in…

More than half of the book is basically a prologue to what the summary promised it would deliver. And when we *do* finally get to the wedding, it happens off page. After waiting all that time and wading through all the drama and shenanigans to get there, we deserved to see the ceremony on page at the very least.

Honestly, I got so impatient waiting for the MOC to happen, that I eventually started listening to the story at 1.5x speed, and only returned the speed to normal once I *finally* got there.

The connection between the two MCs was very ‘Romeo and Juliet’ instalove with the way they basically latched onto each other as soulmates and forsook all others for years after only knowing each other for a day and spending one night together. But I don't read these books for realism, so whatever, I went with it.

Once the marriage plot finally began, I did enjoy it, but there was too little of it to satisfy me completely.

I feel like Odette and Byron spent more time apart, pining, and interacting with other people as opposed to each other, and that is just never something I love in a romance.

It's like, if an author can't make a couple interesting without throwing multiple contrivances at them to keep them apart, then maybe they just weren't that interesting in the first place? The frustrating part is that I *did* like Odette and Byron together when they actually interacted, it just didn't happen enough for me.

As for the narrators, Aiden Snow was excellent (10/10, no notes), but I'm not 100% sold on Brooke Daniels. She seemed to almost fumble over her words at multiple points. She'd also add small pauses where they weren't needed, as if she was speaking faster than her brain could read, and needed a second to catch up before saying the other half of a sentence. Idk if I'm explaining it right, but it's not something I've ever heard with another narrator before. That said, those moments weren't too egregious, and she was competent overall, and delivered regarding acting/emotion.

What worked for me:

The moments of Byron being a good husband
Loved his moments of possessive jealousy too
Byron bonding with Ares (there should have been so much more of this and less “Passions” level soap drama and miscommunication)
Billie (Odette's sister) being a girl's girl and being ride or die for Odette
Aiden Snow's voice 💯

Overall, I'd give the story 3ish stars, because I didn't struggle too much to finish it (sadly, I often have difficulty maintaining my interest in a story long enough to finish it) and it was a mixed bag of stuff I liked and disliked, so not all bad.

Book safety:
Cheating: No (they are celibate during their long separation)
Sharing: For the most part, no. A threesome between Odette, Byron, and his friend River is teased in the beginning, but it never goes further than River kissing Odette and some slight groping before he leaves because it's clear Odette and Byron have a connection, and Byron doesn't want to share Odette with anyone.
OMD/OWD: Yes, Odette and Byron each have someone of the opposite sex who wants them for themselves and is attempting to keep the MCs apart. There is also a lot of ‘moustache twirling, over the top evil’ Parent-of-the-MC drama.

I bought this on sale so I'm not mad about it, but I'd probably feel differently if I paid full price.

A MOC romance where they spend most of the story unmarried...

A well done duet narration and decent story. Narration was very good by both, except the one micro moment so far where the male narrator forgot to put on his kid voice when speaking for the child which made me laugh, and the French from the female narrator. It takes two seconds to google the audio pronunciation of simple French words, which were butchered to the point that it took me second to understand. It annoyed me because the FMC is supposed to be half French and fluent, but it's infrequent enough that it doesn't get in the way of the story. I'm more than half way through and story is enjoyable when compared with others in this genre. I don't appreciate the stupid irresponsible decision from a supporting character that put a child in danger. I don't overly care about kids but it's impacting how I feel about the FMC's judgement and therefore how much I like her. I don't know that I'll read another book from this author. I've read two and there's seems to be a theme of dumb decisions by female characters as a plot point. I was primarily looking for a good duet narration book to listen to (I wouldn't have chosen to read this), so if you're looking for a fun time you don't have to look too closely at that's well performed, then certainly go for this.

great ride (except the French)
