Story
Though I was born with the ability to see the dead, I struggled with it until my brother was killed and his ghost was left behind. Now, I’m determined to figure out who is responsible for his death…the problem is that Detective Maddox Booker, the one working the case, is a grumpy and stubborn man who wants nothing to do with me and definitely doesn’t believe in ghosts. It doesn’t help that I keep finding myself looking ridiculous in front of the detective, thanks to interfering ghosts who enjoy laughing at my expense.

Story
Getting into the vampire-only detective unit was the easy part. What’s going to be more difficult is dealing with my new partner - an ancient vampire who keeps threatening to eat me. The unit has never had a human in it. Marcus - or, as I like to call him: Fangy McFangface - would really prefer to keep it that way. He’s grumpy, short-tempered, and broody, but I have a way with words, and I know he’s starting to like me, even if he swears he’s not.

Smart men never dabble with demons. I never claimed to be smart, but at least, I’m powerful enough to control them. When I bound Havoc to me nearly 300 years ago, I never realized how difficult he’d make my life, although “accidentally” lighting him on fire every now and then does bring a smile to my face. Havoc is handsome, mysterious, and somehow, my closest companion, even if we don’t always get along.

My whole life, I’ve been taught to despise shifters. So when I’m hired to track two escaped convicts, I’m suddenly thrust into the world I hate - or thought I did. Yet I’m inexplicably drawn to the alpha of the pack, whose land the convicts may be hiding on. He’s different than any shifter I've ever met - laidback and quick to laugh, caring, and protective. As secrets are revealed, I start to wonder if everything I’ve been raised to believe was a lie, though it may not matter, because it seems like someone wants us dead.

Ari had a game plan for life: shoot people. Get money. Hang out with fellow criminal friends. He saw absolutely no reason to change that plan until one dark night in Memphis, when a little girl reached out to him with pocket change and a desperate plea for him to help her. Adopting an abused little girl off the streets was, needless to say, not part of the plan. Ari had no idea what he was doing with an eight year old. He especially didn’t know how to juggle taking contracts and raising a little girl.

Suddenly, I find myself caught in a game of cat and mouse, determined to attract the attention of Jackson, the PI who should be my enemy. He pretends like he’s not flattered by my flowers and the mentions of my totally-not-fictitious blow-up doll, Randy (or was it Dandy?), but I know better.

Publisher's Summary
Declan
It’s really hard to pretend like life is normal when you’re staring a monster in the eyes, though he’s both tempting and irritating in his human form. I put my days as a hunter behind me, unable to cope with the death and pain anymore, to become an upstanding citizen and for what? To assist Lake, a man who claims he’s not a monster but keeps talking about me like I’m edible and–even worse–wants to woo me? Between my old organization trying to pull me in and Lake proving that things aren’t quite what they seem, I’m dragged back into this world of fighting the things that humans fear the most.
Lake
The human is exquisite. The first moment he told me he was going to hunt me down, I felt my heart burst. He’s beautiful, sassy, angry, and going to be mine (even if he thinks he can refuse my charms). But what Declan doesn’t know about me is that there’s a reason I’m hiding as a human among monster hunters. And while he definitely doesn’t know why, he’s willing to work with me because the people around us strangely want Declan and me dead at the end of this (I mean, who would want to kill us? We’re amazing).
But honestly…what’s more fun than dragging a hunter off to the dark side?
Warning: This is a chaotic monster and a chaotic human. Stuff happens. People die (but they were bad, so it doesn’t matter, right?) and there’s plenty of humor alongside a budding romance.

I laughed so hard I cried!
I adored this audiobook! The characters were fantastic with their hilarious banter. I don't think I've laughed so hard listening to an audiobook before (and that's saying something). I couldn't listen to this at work during lunch because I kept just bursting into laughter at the ridiculous and absolutely entertaining situations and dialogue and weirding out my coworkers :D. The story was pretty good and I look forward to the next book in the series (I was so bummed when I realized that this was the first in an unfinished series, but I'm dying for more!). Please please please release the next book soon!

DNF
I can't do it.
I simply can not listen to another combo by this author and narrator. All these stories are sounding the exact same.
I made it to chapter 3.
Snarky character. Grumpy character. Save the world.
It's been months since I've listened to anything by this combo, but it didn't matter, I fall right into all her other characters and stories.
Please pick another storyline and narrator.
Maybe at some point in the future, I'll try again, but for now, this is being archived.
As far as Michael, the narration was great, and his voices as always were very clever and perfect.

Monster indeed...
Usually, I listen to Michael Ferraiuolo reading to me an Alice Winters book immediately and love every minute of it. For this one, I listened for three hours, set it aside, and forgot to go back to it.
This is a beyond slow burn, slow burn. I'm glad I came back to it as once I hit 60% the story picked up and got better.
Anyways, in this new series we have Lake (Leland) a true monster who hates being one and Declan (Jackson) who was a hunter who killed monsters but retired to teach kids
I just finished rereading the first assassin's book so when I was reading this one, the characters really stood out.
The world was unique but I would have loved to know more about it. Monsters that attack and kill humans and humans getting used to these attacks is very interesting.
These two don't actually hook up until near the end but I loved the humor between them.
But the true star of the book was Sir Reginald. Please let me find out that it's not just a beta fish.

Best of Alice’s Gruff-Top/Funny-Bottom Trope!
I am a huge fan of Alice Winters characters like Leland and Jackson, Finn and Marcus, and Felix and Lane, but I think this one was my absolute fav of the pairing so far! They gruff but sweet top with the funny and sexy-cute bottom are a couple I adore in ANY form, but this one was like having Leland with Marcus (from the Hitman’s Guide and Vampire RC series), and it was fantastic! The story was also very original, and I adored the side characters.

Great fun
Very enjoyable book with fun characters. Sir Reginald FTW! There are several memorable scenes that will definitely stay with me lol. I read the ebook first, but it's one of those books that is even better in audio.
Michael Ferraiuolo uses the same voice for Lake as he does for Leland in the Hitman's guide and for other characters in various books as well. Could try to mix it up on occassion.

Didn't Care for It
for Goodness sake , Alice just keeps taking same two characters and placing them in new environments. A perky, love deprived, clever , hyper man/boy and a big, grumpy, love starved, impatient hero who needs rescued.
and this one .. the "world building" is illogical - or at least there is insufficient information provided.
I'll stick to the series I like but I will not be trying any of the new ones. Even when I have liked the first book- the second is just full of side character antics .
This review is for Monstrous Intent : Its ok. I did not hate it - but I found it difficult to focus or engage. The narrator is amazing,

Intriguing new series!
I love almost anything Alice Winters puts out, but this is an intriguing new series with a very interesting premise! Granted, the MCs are relatively similar to those in the Assassin’s Guide series, but I always enjoyed that series a lot. I would love to see Alice branch out and write characters that differ a little more, to be honest. However, this book never failed to entertain. There are some plot points that need more explanation, but perhaps she will focus on those in the next book(s). Thank you for this book, Alice! I’m very excited to see these characters return for more and to learn more about their world!
