Publisher's Summary

2015 Audie Award Finalist for Fiction and Solo Narration—Male

In a mega-stakes, high-suspense race against time, three of the most unlikely and winning heroes Stephen King has ever created try to stop a lone killer from blowing up thousands.

In the frigid pre-dawn hours, in a distressed Midwestern city, hundreds of desperate unemployed folks are lined up for a spot at a job fair. Without warning, a lone driver plows through the crowd in a stolen Mercedes, running over the innocent, backing up, and charging again. Eight people are killed; fifteen are wounded. The killer escapes.

In another part of town, months later, a retired cop named Bill Hodges is still haunted by the unsolved crime. When he gets a crazed letter from someone who self-identifies as the "perk" and threatens an even more diabolical attack, Hodges wakes up from his depressed and vacant retirement, hell-bent on preventing another tragedy.

Brady Hartfield lives with his alcoholic mother in the house where he was born. He loved the feel of death under the wheels of the Mercedes, and he wants that rush again. Only Bill Hodges, with a couple of highly unlikely allies, can apprehend the killer before he strikes again. And they have no time to lose, because Brady's next mission, if it succeeds, will kill or maim thousands.

Mr. Mercedes is a war between good and evil, from the master of suspense whose insight into the mind of this obsessed, insane killer is chilling and unforgettable.

Editorial Review

Mr. Mercedes is the tense and relentless story of an unhinged terrorist, a jaded retired police officer, and a race against time as both close in on their targets. Will the crazed lunatic carry out another act of deadly violence, or will the cop piece together the puzzle and stop him in time?

Police officer Bill Hodges is preparing for retirement as the news comes in of a horrific act of violence – a terrorist has driven a Mercedes into a crowd of people at a job fair, leaving piles of bodies and countless injured in his wake. The killer disappears without a trace to plan his next attack, and officer Hodges settles into an uneasy and depressing retirement. That is, until he receives an unsettling and taunting letter from the self-proclaimed killer, signed, Mr. Mercedes.

Narrator Will Patton adds his engaging and quietly gritty voice to this audiobook, taking the suspense and heating it up to a boiling point until it bubbles over in an action-packed and unpausable finale. His entrancing work landed him a finalist position in the 2015 Audie Awards for both fiction and solo narration – male.

This electrifying thriller is the first detective story from the undisputed king of thrillers, suspense, and horror, Stephen King, and the first in a trilogy. It quickly gained international acclaim after being released in 2014, picking up the Goodreads Choice Award in the Mystery and Thriller category, and the 2015 Edgar Award for Best Novel. Soon after, it was adapted as a three-season crime drama television series.

This is why King gets the BIG BUCKS

I've never read a Stephen King novel. I don't like horror or paranormal stuff. This is different. I could not stop listening. Great story. Great narrator. Great book.

Major Recommendation to Listen To Mr. Mercedes

Will Patton's narration of Mr. Mercedes was perfect. I truly never lost interest throughout the book. The story builds to a climatic conclusion which has you on the edge of your seat throughout. The battling minds and narratives of the detective and killer creates such a tense atmosphere that you don't know what is going to happen around every corner. Truly my most favourite novel / experience I've had the pleasure of listening to on Audible. I'm becoming a major fan of Stephen King's work.

Spectacular

Just when you think you've read Kings best book, you pick up another one. Watched the first season first, listened to this next, lived both. Once you let yourself get into Will's voice he really helps you feel the different characters well I believe.

I also read The Outsider first had no idea that they were even connected, what a pleasant surprise that was. #WorldBuilderKing

Great narrative and idea, but

Generally I love Stephen King's writing and the style of this book doesn't disappoint. I have no issue with the detective story, but the convenient plot turns are too convenient for their own good. Almost every situation gets magically resolved and by the end one of the side characters almost turns into the main protagonist. The ending was just simply too convenient. Bet you, in 9 out of 10 cases in real life that wouldn't have ended well. Other than that, it was enjoyable to listen. The narrator nailed it.
