Publisher's Summary

In a mega-stakes, high-suspense race against time, three of the most unlikely and winning heroes Stephen King has ever created try to stop a lone killer from blowing up thousands.

In the frigid pre-dawn hours, in a distressed Midwestern city, hundreds of desperate unemployed folks are lined up for a spot at a job fair. Without warning, a lone driver plows through the crowd in a stolen Mercedes, running over the innocent, backing up, and charging again. Eight people are killed; fifteen are wounded. The killer escapes.

In another part of town, months later, a retired cop named Bill Hodges is still haunted by the unsolved crime. When he gets a crazed letter from someone who self-identifies as the "perk" and threatens an even more diabolical attack, Hodges wakes up from his depressed and vacant retirement, hell-bent on preventing another tragedy.

Brady Hartfield lives with his alcoholic mother in the house where he was born. He loved the feel of death under the wheels of the Mercedes, and he wants that rush again. Only Bill Hodges, with a couple of highly unlikely allies, can apprehend the killer before he strikes again. And they have no time to lose, because Brady's next mission, if it succeeds, will kill or maim thousands.

Mr. Mercedes is a war between good and evil, from the master of suspense whose insight into the mind of this obsessed, insane killer is chilling and unforgettable.

This is why King gets the BIG BUCKS

I've never read a Stephen King novel. I don't like horror or paranormal stuff. This is different. I could not stop listening. Great story. Great narrator. Great book.

Great

Took a few chapters to start to enjoy the narration — seemed over-wrought and waaaaay too dramatic at first, but as the story hooked me It got easier to swallow. By the mid-point I found I was enjoying the narration well enough.

First Novel in a Series that I Hope Keeps on Giving

I was absolutely in LOVE with this book. Once again, a fantastic read by Will Patton and a great head rush into a series by Stephen King. It was a great length, I never felt bored and there was such a great buildup that I honestly held my breath at some parts. I even had a bit spoiled for me because I had read The Outsider first which does include Holly and a bit of back story in the Bill Hodges series but it didn’t deter anything. I still held my breath!! Can’t wait to start Finders Keepers!

(Also I loved the music they used at the end!)

Great characters

I really enjoyed listening to this book while walking, Bill is a kick ass cop, that takes no crap from Mr. Mercedes, who drove through a crowd of people for pleasure, then taunts Bill Hodges to play the cat and mouse game. Of course the cat wins. Hopefully books 2 and 3 will carry on with great characters like this first book did

Just terrible

So disappointing. Boring story line, unsympathetic character. A waste of time. I expect better from Stephen King.

This story is simply terrible

When I originally bought this book I was expecting an exciting cat and mouse, detective vs bad guy chase! This was not the case, whatsoever. I only got to 2/3 into the book before I gave up hope on this slow moving and just sucky story. It centers around a washed up retired and suicidal detective that can't even solve the mystery of where his own shoes are, let alone the mystery of the sad sap who ran over all those people in YOU GUESSED IT a Black Mercedes. Don't waste your time.... really. If I could refund this book and get my credit back I would. Gosh

Profanity

What would have made Mr. Mercedes better?

Far less use of profanity. Have read Steven King before and don't recall this much foul language. Couldn't finish listening to it.

What was most disappointing about Stephen King’s story?

The language used.

Would you be willing to try another one of Will Patton’s performances?

No, his performance was not at all compelling.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Mr. Mercedes?

All that I could listen to and I had to stop.

Any additional comments?

This is not what I thought I was getting when I downloaded it.

Really not good

Very disappointing. This actually reads like a TV version of a Stephen King book. The narrator only made the dialogue sound more corny. When Will Patton does his "female" voice it's just like nails on a chalkboard. The worst thing about this is that the main characters are really dull and sometimes annoying. Save yourself some time and skip this one. Dr. Sleep is a good book if you're looking for alternatives.

Very Disappointing

I have read many Stephen King books, some I liked more than others, this one I hated. I feel like he has run out of stories. Don't waste your time on this very thin, predictable plot, annoying characters and a whiny reader.

Disappointing

The narration was fine, but the dialogue and plot were predictable and poor at best.

What the heck did I just listen to? It's complete garbage.

The reading was good, audio quality was good. The book it's self? Horrible! Stephen King obviously has some serious pent up sexual desires regarding his mom and other women. The story had moments that were just ridiculous and would never happen in real life. I know this is fantasy but it's based on reality and Stephen King is not in touch with that. I wish I could get my money back and time that I wanted on this rubbish.
