Publisher's Summary

From Hugo and Audie Award-winning author John Scalzi comes an exciting sequel to the New York Times best-selling, number one Audible hit The Dispatcher, performed by the incomparable Zachary Quinto.

Welcome to the new world, in which murder is all but a thing of the past. Because when someone kills you, 999 times out of 1,000, you instantly come back to life. In this world, there are dispatchers - licensed killers who step in when you’re at risk of a natural or unintentional death. They kill you - so you can live.

Tony Valdez is used to working his job as a dispatcher within the rules of the law and the state. But times are tough, and more and more Tony finds himself riding the line between what’s legal and what will pay his bills. After one of these shady gigs and after being a witness to a crime gone horribly wrong, Tony discovers that people around him are dying, for reasons that make no sense...and which just may implicate him.

Tony is running out of time: to solve the mystery of these deaths, to keep others from dying, and to keep himself from being a victim of what looks like murder, by other means.

The Evolution of the Gumshoe Detective Story

I enjoyed this book as much as its predecessor, The Dispatcher (which you should listen to first). The snarky humour reminds me of gumshoe detective novels, complete with swamy thugs, murders that are not murders, and intriguing plot twists. A compelling story, well told, and excellently voiced by Quinto. Full marks!

Another great short

I did enjoy this one but the first one was still my favourite dispatcher story. Looking forward to the next ones.

Fictional

I enjoy suspense and muter stories but a little to fictional for me, even thought the story was entertaining.

Great addition

Very good instalment to the dispatcher series. Lots of suspense with a satisfying ending. It also felt like you didn’t have to read the first to understand the second book. And always Zachary quinto is phenomenal

So good!

These books read by Zachary Quinto pack a lot of good stuff in a short package. Charming charactes and unpredictable endings. I hope there will be more.

Excellent short novel

Just like the first book in this series I really enjoyed it, and it kept me entertained from beginning to end

Boring and uninspired.

john Scalzi is really phoning it in for the audible dollars. It's too bad. I don't expect a whole lot of integrity in the face of Amazon but he's not hurting for cash. I'm super disappointed.

Scalzi and & Qui Deliver on 2nd Dispatcher book!!

Great continuation and fervent wish to see more from John Scalzi and his 'Dispatcher'. Will be a great plus to be able to hear Zachary Quinto continue on as narrator. There are so many possibilities for the story line. It's been delightful to listen to. May there be more short stories (or longer).

Scalzi + Quinto, for the WIN!

I am a Scalzi fan. I am a Quinto fan. Together, they deliver.

Not a typical Scalzi but then his imagination is so “out there” that I’m not sure “typical” should ever be applied to him. Some are calling this series darker” but I’m not getting that vibe. It’s perhaps “quieter” in a weird way - the 1st person narrator is a very calm guy, and though he finds himself in bizarrely violent situations, he remains calm and soothing. That brings us to Zachary Quinto’s voice: so smooth that you want to go hang out with the Dispatcher just to put your mind at ease.

Delightful Mystery

When I listened to The Dispatcher in 2016 I was disappointed. I wanted more. A novel would have been nice, but there was no mention of a sequel or even a series of stories. Now out of the blue - the sequel is here! All the pieces come together in another tale of a world where murder isn't usually permanent. I hope rumors of a third story are true.

Good follow up

Enjoyed the first installment of this titled The Dispatcher. Interesting idea of murders being almost impossible and things not being always what they seem. I enjoyed the narrator as well.
