Publisher's Summary

From Hugo and Audie Award-winning author John Scalzi comes an exciting sequel to the New York Times best-selling, number one Audible hit The Dispatcher, performed by the incomparable Zachary Quinto.

Welcome to the new world, in which murder is all but a thing of the past. Because when someone kills you, 999 times out of 1,000, you instantly come back to life. In this world, there are dispatchers - licensed killers who step in when you’re at risk of a natural or unintentional death. They kill you - so you can live.

Tony Valdez is used to working his job as a dispatcher within the rules of the law and the state. But times are tough, and more and more Tony finds himself riding the line between what’s legal and what will pay his bills. After one of these shady gigs and after being a witness to a crime gone horribly wrong, Tony discovers that people around him are dying, for reasons that make no sense...and which just may implicate him.

Tony is running out of time: to solve the mystery of these deaths, to keep others from dying, and to keep himself from being a victim of what looks like murder, by other means.

Another great short

I did enjoy this one but the first one was still my favourite dispatcher story. Looking forward to the next ones.

A new style Noir mystery

I quite enjoyed this little tale. We see a world with a major difference in it and then explore how things would change if murder wasn’t guaranteed to be fatal.
How would various slices of humanity change? Would it be worth the risk to have someone murder you to avoid the trouble of having to take an airplane back home? How much money would have to be at risk before that 1/1000 chance of it sticking is worth it?

These and many other questions are explored. I highly recommend this short tale.

Love these books!

I was hooked into the first book within one Chapter which says so much because most books I start I never finish. I love the mystery, morality and ethical questions this series caused in my mind. I was so excited to tell my husband all about this series. I am homeschooling and plan to use this series for educational purposes in a couple years. The only downside is the lack of sleep because I couldn’t stop listening for what was coming next. Bravo. I sure hope this author has other books and more in this series. I have so many questions…..I NEED MORE!

Loved it.

Very clever. Fast paced. Light and entertaining given the subject matter. Narrator was excellent.

Once again interesting story by this author.

Read alone, or after the first. Last one I reviewed I mentioned that I hoped there would be more, and there was. :) perhaps there’s more yet? Nice brain candy, again.

Obvious and boring

This plot was predictable and the story was boring. Might be good for young teens or people who aren’t too bright.

Thoroughly Enjoyable

Loved the story and the narration. Off to see if there's another Scalzi book set in this world. I really hope there is.

great!

I thought this was really good but too short. I love this series and idea. I definitely want more of it in the future. On top of that, Zachary Quinto is a great narrator. I highly recommend reading these!

Good sequel

The stakes are higher and the body count upped. The second in the series adds on what was best from the first. Narration is still the standout over the story.

In general the story is more engaging and thrilling than the first. We find out more about the sci-fi aspects, though there is still something ‘missing’ that prevents it from being great.

Definitely listen if you enjoyed the first book.

Scalzi and & Qui Deliver on 2nd Dispatcher book!!

Great continuation and fervent wish to see more from John Scalzi and his 'Dispatcher'. Will be a great plus to be able to hear Zachary Quinto continue on as narrator. There are so many possibilities for the story line. It's been delightful to listen to. May there be more short stories (or longer).

Scalzi + Quinto, for the WIN!

I am a Scalzi fan. I am a Quinto fan. Together, they deliver.

Not a typical Scalzi but then his imagination is so “out there” that I’m not sure “typical” should ever be applied to him. Some are calling this series darker” but I’m not getting that vibe. It’s perhaps “quieter” in a weird way - the 1st person narrator is a very calm guy, and though he finds himself in bizarrely violent situations, he remains calm and soothing. That brings us to Zachary Quinto’s voice: so smooth that you want to go hang out with the Dispatcher just to put your mind at ease.

Delightful Mystery

When I listened to The Dispatcher in 2016 I was disappointed. I wanted more. A novel would have been nice, but there was no mention of a sequel or even a series of stories. Now out of the blue - the sequel is here! All the pieces come together in another tale of a world where murder isn't usually permanent. I hope rumors of a third story are true.

Good follow up

Enjoyed the first installment of this titled The Dispatcher. Interesting idea of murders being almost impossible and things not being always what they seem. I enjoyed the narrator as well.
