Publisher's Summary

Master storyteller and internationally bestselling author Christopher Paolini returns to the World of Eragon in this stunning epic fantasy set a year after the events of the Inheritance Cycle. Join Dragon Rider—and fan favorite—Murtagh and his dragon as they confront a perilous new enemy!

The world is no longer safe for the Dragon Rider Murtagh and his dragon, Thorn. An evil king has been toppled, and they are left to face the consequences of the reluctant role they played in his reign of terror. Now they are hated and alone, exiled to the outskirts of society.

Throughout the land, hushed voices whisper of brittle ground and a faint scent of brimstone in the air—and Murtagh senses that something wicked lurks in the shadows of Alagaësia. So begins an epic journey into lands both familiar and untraveled, where Murtagh and Thorn must use every weapon in their arsenal, from brains to brawn, to find and outwit a mysterious witch. A witch who is much more than she seems.

In this gripping novel starring one of the most popular characters from Christopher Paolini’s blockbuster Inheritance Cycle, a Dragon Rider must discover what he stands for in a world that has abandoned him. Murtagh is the perfect book to enter the World of Eragon for the first time . . . or to joyfully return.

a gorgeous throwback

I grew up reading the inheritance cycle, and this was a spectacular return to that world. both similar and different in wonderful ways.

Drawn out, dark, and sad

I disliked how different the story line is from Eragon, how much darkness there is, and how little adventure. Murtaghs time with the witch seemed to drag on and on, and it seemed like there were so many stupid mistakes he made when he knew better. Probably won't bother reading anymore if there are more books in this line.

boring - slow , painful

I cannot understand the amount of praise this book is getting - this is garbage. boring. transparent , captures non of the magic of the previous series. just Murtagh doing absolutely nothing for an entire book. seriously don't listen to the good reviews. just goofy people faaar to in love with the author to admit this is garbage. pure garbage.

I loved the book, I can't wait for the next one.

Alagëasia is back!!

This is a great first read for anyone unfamiliar with the world of Eragon and a must read for anyone who has read the Inheritance cycle. I've been waiting 12 yearsfor the chance to return to this world in a fresh full length novel and this doesn't disappoint at all.

Better?

I didn’t think I could love the Inheritance Cycle more than I already did. Murtagh blew it out of the water. The author’s life experience really shines through in this deep, thought provoking, difficult, substantial story. With a great ending no less!! Well done Christopher - keep em coming!! Oh and no small thanks to the immense talents of Gerard Doyle - incomparable in skill.

I wanted to love this so much more than I did

I’ve been in love with the world of Eragon since the moment I started reading the first book. I must’ve read each book at least 3-4 times… I don’t think I’ll revisit this one. Don’t get me wrong, I’m incredibly happy I purchased it, but I was disappointed with the story. To me, I was frustrated the entire time at Murtagh’s constant failures. He trips, stumbles, is captured, freed, captured, freed, tries something, fails, rinse, repeat. It made me sad, sad for Murtagh’s character and sad for the story… Anyway, still a great book, but a bit of a let down “personally”!

What a treat to be back in the world of Eragon and get to know more of Murtagh while he gets to know himself!

My only dislike would be not knowing how long till the next instalment may be. May the winds bring swift words to Christopher and the wait for new words upon my ears and mind be short.
