Publisher's Summary

Little girls are vanishing from Deadwood, South Dakota. Fearing her daughter might be next, single mom Violet Parker is desperate to find the monster behind the abductions.

With her savings dwindling and just three weeks left to sell her first house or lose her realtor job, Violet is ecstatic when a handsome jeweler hires her to sell his century-old Victorian masterpiece - until she sees the dilapidated dwelling. Now if she could just convince her only buyer to stop rejecting vintage homes as if they're haunted.

Short on time and long on worry, Violet refuses to give up her dream of a fresh start in Deadwood. But with a malicious coworker trying to get her fired, a secret admirer sending her creepy messages, and a sexy stranger hiding skeletons in his closet, will Violet end up as one of Deadwood's dearly departed?

GAWD Awful

Characters are shallow and annoying beyond belief. The main female character is portrayed as ditzy martyr mom. The story line is convoluted and silly. The narrator needs to learn how to pace themselves and how to read in different tones to acknowledge different characters.
Don’t waste your time on this.

Good listen

most of the story is ok but honestly the fatphobia and (self) body shaming is very ugh, and often enough that it gets old fast, especially when the protagonist starts drooling over men 🙄

Performance was great. Story…

This story felt like it was a draft and could have been made a lot better with editing.
I found the main character annoying. She acted clueless or like she had no control over stringing more than one guy along, betraying her best friend, even protecting her kids. Also when she was at risk of dying it was more about the wise cracks than feeling any sense of fear from her.
Story did the big buildup and the last two hours just jumped around like the huge reveal had no impact.
Loved all of the supporting characters, particularly the old guy.

loved it!

The author did an exceptional job at masking the killer, I thought. It took only one line for me to figure out who it was though and it was so subtle I just instantly loved the story. I swayed a few times on the subplots though, which made it more fun and the characters are awesome! Cant wait to bite into book two.

It was good.

I love Caroline Shaffer. She did a good job bringing the various characters to life. The characters are believable well developed and they carry over into the next book. I love the story line.

Main character too stupid to take

Got to chapter 10 and couldn't take any more of such an idiotic immature main character. This woman is supposed to be a mother in her thirties with two children?? Too many good books out there to be wasting valuable time on this quality of writing. I gave it more time than I should have. Great narration, by the way.

Great start to a new series

I loved this book and am looking foward to reading more in the series. It has equal parts romance mystery and comedy. I actually laughed out loud at some portions. Highly recommend the book.

I'm in deep like

I had never read anything by this author and I scrolled by this series in the plus catalog a lot of times, thinking it was dark. It's so not. I listened to them one after the other and will buy them when they drop off the list. It's a mix of cozy, supernatural and steamy sex all in one. I want my own Doc, and to dig a deep hole for Ray and Tiffany, then throw Susan on top. I love the characters and the narration. All in all a win, and I will be checking out more from Ann Charles.
