About this listen

Payton

Running away from home at 17 wasn't easy. Let's face it, though, nothing before or in the ten years since has ever been easy for me. And I'm doing okay—sorta. I just need to keep scraping by, living under the radar. Staying out of people's way, off people's minds.

When a man walks through my open patio door, stepping boldly into my home and my life, I should be scared, frightened, terrified.

I must be more broken than I realized because I'm none of those things. I'm intrigued—and I'm wondering if the way to take control of my life is by giving in to him.

Nero

The first time I took a man's life, I knew there'd be no going back, no normal existence in the cards for me. Instead of walking away, I climbed a mountain of bodies and created my own destiny by forming The Alliance. And I was fine with that, content enough to carry on.

Until I stepped through those open doors, and into her life.

I should've walked away. Should've gone right back out the door I came through. But I didn't. And now her life is in danger. That's the thing about being a bad man. I'll happily paint the streets red to protect what's mine.

And Payton is mine. Whether she knows it or not.

this was my first mafia story and I really enjoyed the characters. I especially loved the friendship between Nero and king, I found most of their interactions quite comical and found myself chuckling throughout the book.
the man reading Nero's parts of the book was particularly funny when he was trying to mimic paytens voice 😂

I thought it was great, not to dark but not to light either.

⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 - I bought this because I really enjoyed other books by this author and had high hopes.
It was a little disappointing but likely it's a me thing. I wasn't a fan of either MC but I am still looking forward to King's book.
⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 - Narration was not bad but also not great. Both narrators were new to me and they did not grow on me as most new voices do.

not my favorite

it's always easier for be to do audiobooks if I like the voices and this one was great! both narrators did a great job at portraying these 2 very different and opposite characters. he's rough and possessive, she's soft and sweet. the contrast in the voices was perfect.

on the the story.

He's a very bad man, looking for an escape from the cops so when he sees her balcony door wide open he takes that opportunity.

She's sweet and broken and desperately seeking protection and love ( both of which she never had growing up)
Then comes the obsession...

I also loved the plus size representation!

This man is all kinds of red flags, everything i would never tolerate in real life but for some reason I'm swooning like Peyton is.

found my new favorite narrators

Sadly after all the great reviews I heard of this book, it was disappointed.
Nothing about the story really stood out or made it different from many other mafia books I've read. I truthfully found Payton really annoying.

It was an instant love, with not much character building or story, other than he sees her, wants her, moves her in and she gets taken shortly after that, a very common story line for these type of books.

Sadly the narration was odd too, I don't understand why they wouldn't have the male reading the male dialog in thr female chapters and vice versa for the male chapters, inside of them trying to each other lines in funny voice that just sounded off.

I'm just glad I didn't use credits or money on this one.

Just a Mafia book

It started off intriguing and then got kind of lame. The performance was good though, story not so much.

Meh.
