Forever is such a long time.

Walter Tye is the best friend any adventurer needs. He is the smiling shopkeeper next to your local dungeon, the one who sells you these cheap healing potions. When you need information, Tye always knows. He wants to help; you can trust him.

A Mixed Bag (Not what you might think it is)

Author is a talented writer and I've read their other stuff before.

[Review will discuss tones of the story, ie. tonal shift, initial, etc. If you consider this a spoiler. you can skip]

This book is decently written but the audio sample and description would make you think it is a lighthearted comedy, the beginning of the book even does this, the humour not being the outright best. however things get increasingly more somber to then depressing as a sequence of events unfold. to the point where it can feel oppreseively depressing throughout. if youre fine with this, then power to you! but not what I got it for.

Theming/writing: a lot of Nordic and Arthurian legend hybridized to make a unique world, and seeing how the characters fit in this universe is interesting as well. litrpg stuff can get a bit exhausting and not as interesting as much as other litrpgs. philosophy on having to accept death or not is interesting, and does show elements of hypocrisy from "heroes" , Gods, etc. the protagonist is pragmatic and obsessive but their antagonists are very flawed as well. the problem I have is that the end message/take away after this depressing journey tries to be bitter sweet and self questioning but doesn't do so in a way I personally find satisfying, in fact it seems belittling because it feels like the readers and characters had reached this conclusion far before it and thus it seemed obvious.

Voicework: I'm familiar with the narrator and I do genuinely like their work (voiced vainqueuer the dragon, made by the same author but being a litrpg comedy), with this audible one, it can have some hit or miss moments. some voices are extremely grating (such as a certain goddess) and their range is shown to be limited due to the large cast of characters.

Overall: If you came looking for a satirical comedic litrpg through and through? look for something like Vainqueuer the dragon (again by the same author) instead. If you're going more for something with a pragmatic protagonist and causing chaos to establish order, then this should be for you but it still struggles in some areas: The book brings a lot of interesting philosophy of the meaning or lack thereof of life and death, the preconceived notions we have about it to retain a level of control, the cost reward of pragmatism, fatalism, etc. Raising some perspectives but not many I personally find myself identifying too strongly with. The characters oscillate between likable and frustrating. Overall, probably my least favourite of the void herald's work. I see ideas this book has in terms of philosophizing unseen perspectives and the litrpg system done better in its sibling series (perfect run and Vainqueuer).

not the best but worth the time.

this story has some major problems. don't go in expectationing a RPG lit or a dungeon management story. the story is a fun and crazy trip of ideas, some working others not.

if you give it some time you will find some gems.

One of my new favourites

The first couple chapters were a bit rocky, and personally I found one or two voices a teeny bit cringe but holy hell this rocked.
My personal favourite aspects were the interesting philosophical approach to immortality along with undeath, and the unique twists to standard characters from folk lore.

Not a Dungeon Management

Not a Lit-RPG
Not a Dungeon Management
Not an Adventure
Not a Comedy

Well written MC/villain and character interactions, but the Publisher's Summary for this book describes only the starting conditions of the book, and implies the book will be something it is not. I feel like this book/series could have been amazing but falls short by trying to include too much without giving any one element (with the exception of MC and his goals) the care and attention it requires.

Levels and abilities seem arbitrary and do not correspond well to actual power except where combat is hand-waved or as an excuse to do or not do something. If it were not for some lore related content, I would say the story would be just as good, if not better by leaving out all mention of levels and system abilities entirely.

While it starts to include Dungeon Management elements, it features near the start of the story, and only sporadically mentioned afterwards. Adventurers and their deeds also only feature in this book in the way a generic farmer features in a starting town of most classic hero-fantasy or RPG.

Unlike the Publisher's Summary, this book contains very little humor that I could identify, with the exception of a few slap-stick pranks the book is mostly focused on the drama reacting to events.

I feel like this story would have been better written more like a dark-fantasy novel starting from the MCs childhood and without so many flashbacks... But that might just be me.

How to Write a Villainous MC

Wonderful. This is probably one of the most well-written megalomaniacs I've ever come across. I both loved and hated the MC in all the best ways. Well done, Void Herald. You are quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. I usually wait for books to get a handful of ratings before buying them, but I'm glad I took the chance here.

For those of you coming from Vanquer the Dragon, this book doesn't have the same silliness, but it does have the quirky characters and enjoyable banter. Never Die Twice is definitely worth your time!

voice acting making it tough to continue

everything is fine for the most part... basic kind of story with average characters not showing much personality or individuality outside of what serves the plot.

Biggest issue by far is... Everytime a "female" voice is portrayed the voice actor does this crazy pitchy and incredibly whiney voice. Almost as if the female characters are constantly moaning or has to pee and refuses to stop talking to go handle it.

Not finding anything better than good or so-so in this book so when those voices come up, its too easy to be taken out of the story.

Will return credit as soon as I am able

Excellent

This book is really good, the narration is fantastic, the story solid and well rounded. Honestly, it felt like getting two books for the price of one.

Story is alright, voices are traumatic

I'm only halfway through so I can't speak on how it ended or anything of that nature. What I can say is that so far I have found the story relatively engaging. I do look forward to seeing the end.

The problem however is this narrator. Jack Voraces does passable voices for men, but downright terrible voices for women. Every now and then they almost sound ok, but generally speaking its quite awful. Like downright awful.

I feel bad for dissing what has to be hard work on a difficult task. Having distinct and interesting narration for a wide variety of characters isn't easy. For 21 hours no less. But most of the "female" voices are truly treacherous. Sounds like a DM trying to voice a goblin.

The human Inhuman

Main character was very well put together with motivation and backstory to back up his actions holes in his own thanking and flaws in his reasoning to justify his actions without admitting to his selfish desires which makes the main character one of the most human characters I’ve come across recently which is a little ironic since he’s not a human I really enjoyed how the book through all the characters scheming and planning still imposes consequences on the main character for his actions without it feeling like the character didn’t win which I see a lot of books doing a character loses something that completely overshadows the victory and the balance here was really nicely set it’s a fun book with interesting concepts and a really solid main character who even if you don’t agree with can empathize with

Performance was less than stellar the narrator reuses voices and sometimes I can’t tell a part two characters most of the female voices weren’t all that distinct and even some of the male voices I couldn’t teleport the only reason I didn’t get lost is because of situational context it was rather annoying

In all I enjoy the book is a fun main character that is very deep and nuanced with a semi open but fun magic system using some Norse mythology a rather fun way I do recommend

Unexpected

From the description I thought the was gonna be a comedy it is not. I heard leveling system thought it was a lit RPG it was not. Read about dungeons thought it was a dungeon management book it was not.
So what is this book ? I’d say it’s a love letter to Norse mythology
And a power trip fantasy

The worst type of voice work

Every character's voice was awful to listen to. Some were simply difficult to understand, but most were almost painful to hear.

Long story that seemed longer

MC starts at level 45ish stronger than anyone then in 15 levels ish becomes a god has every spell… in short no spell system development, no town building or crafting systems, no stats or skills achieved until they are suddenly used. Poor story development but excellent combination of multiple mythology systems

Interesting premise at first, but...

The story felt sluggish and shallow compared to the huge mystical events transpiring after the first arc. The RPG took much of the great myths and legends of our world and turned it into a huge conglomerate mash up where much of the inspiring meaning behind each myth felt watered down. The main character didn't seem to grow or change much like the book implied would happen, always opting for his dream over all else, so unfortunately much of the novel became predictable not leaving much to look forward to. The characters mostly felt flat, unchanging, and much like the theme of necromancy were all treated very much like expandable puppets for better or worse. Following that, nothing felt of great consequence throughout the entire book, nothing spurred my imagination or made me question Walters anti-hero ways, including the ending, which left me about as emotionless as Walter was in most situations. There were some funny parts, and I really did like the anti-hero approach Walter made, but these events were very far and few between. Overall, I would say this book tried to be too much of everything and tried to have a huge epic ending when the main premise early on was more appealing with the early banter and secret double life. Everything after the beginning arc just went down hill.

Perhaps I wasn't the intended audience for this book, but sadly it definitely felt that way. I think I would have enjoyed the book better if it played to the strength of the grueling cat and mouse game with comedic relief they had going on in the beginning with the princess.

The performance was great, Jack portrayed a lot of the characters perfectly with his great range of voices. I will always appreciate his work and dedication to his readings!
