Publisher's Summary

On a bright September morning in 1939, two days after Britain declares war on Germany, a group of privileged but desperate people gather in Southhampton to board the largest, most luxurious airliner ever built - the Pan American Clipper - bound for New York.

The passengers include a fascist English aristocrat fleeing with his family and a fortune in jewels; a German scientist escaping from the Nazis; a murderer under FBI escort; a beautiful young woman heading for a new life; and a handsome, charming, unscrupulous thief.

They will be in the air for 30 hours, soothed by the carpeted lounges, the curtained beds, the gourmet dining room, and the endless champagne. But once inside the flying palace, there is no escape. Over the Atlantic, the Clipper's passengers are gripped by mounting fear and tension as their journey reaches the point of no return.

Well-crafted story

Another edge of your seat novel. Ken Follett at his best. You won’t go wrong with this one.

Enjoyable albeit predictable

Good for a beach read. An unusual premise. I've enjoyed some of his other books more but this is worth a download.

Not one of his better books

Slow to start but it catches up. A bit more of unnecessary sexual content than usual. Narration was first rate.

It should be a classic!

I loved it years ago. Maybe 30 years ago. Listening now, the writing style is a bit simplistic and the narration compounds that. However, it’s a great plot, with compelling characters and a wonderful old airplane.
Ironically, it would be great teen fiction, except for a few sexual interludes that are a bit explicit for kids.
But I am old enough to have read it when it was new.

Enjoyable Cozy Mystery

A diverting escapist story about an interesting time period. Gets a little racy at times.

I like historic fiction

This story was fun and I liked the characters. The accents may not be perfect but the story is good!

one of my favorite Follett books.

I love this story. I've read the book many times, but this was my first time listening to it. I have heard better narrators. This one was a bit rushed at times, but not awful. it is worth the time ans money.

Disappointing Narration

Enjoyed the characters and the history. Narration could have been much better. Huge fan of Historical fiction

A Good Story

This was different from the other Follet novels that I’ve read. The story line keeps moving. I did not like the narration.
