Publisher's Summary

"Why do I have to have moral issues with killing someone? I feel like such a hypocrite! It's worse than a vegetarian touting organically grown steaks." (Eric, physics teacher, involuntary vampire, and part-time demon slayer)

Eric didn't ask to be a vampire. In fact he didn't even believe in them. Biting your own tongue with your fangs does a lot of convincing. Even so, being a part-time undead isn't as easy as you might think. It can let you hold down a day job, true, but sometimes the night "life" can be more than a little difficult, what with those bloodthirsty urges and predatory instincts kicking in. Luckily for Eric he can rely on his trusty steed and her unwavering support, his flaming sword and its sarcastic wit, and his own snarky sense of humor.

Good but could have been Great

I bought this out of impulse and do not regret it, this was a fun medieval fantasy with a vampire twist. I love the lighthearted tone and the nochalant personality of the protagonist, most dark fantasy tend to be moody and tense.

However, like many before me have complained, there is so much filler and side quests in this story, it's in need of a good editor.

Also, if you do not like some cliches than this novel will annoy you. The protagonist is over powered, liked universally by everyone he meets, all his buddies also swear alligence to him and will die for him, women will sway for him, he is so nice and humble that he might as well be mother Theresa.

I like the setting and the circumstances, this has a lot of potential, I liked enough to buy the next 2 books. This is the first afterall, I am hoping the story and writing gets better with the newer novels

Sean Runnette was excellent narrator, I give him 5 stars.

I keep checking for another installment

At least once a month I look on audible and sometimes the internet for the release of book 8.

I picked up this series around 2 years ago as I listened to audio while at work and this title had a long running time which is excellent for my credit and itches my audio-bug for the week.

However it did not last me a week as I ended up listening to it on my commute to and from work and while doing my household chores.

The narrator does a great job at not being monotone, has a good cadence and pace to the story and if you do find it to take a while you can use you app to increase the speed to what you find acceptable.

The story was engaging and the character was relatable as a normal human with a head on his shoulder (brains) and in good overall control of his emotions (not a drama queen). When he does lose emotional control it is Warranted. although the character is powerful it takes him time to understand that strength and use it properly which does make him an easy target for other and it shows the struggle and challenges he goes through.

my only issue with the series in general is that the main character broods a bit much, not that it's not well deserved at times - being immortal tends to do that and it blends well with the phoebe side of the storyline (Later book...much later so book one listeners don't worry about it, instead look forward to a great adventure)

Overall: In my opinion as a Fantasy listener I would say that the story written by the author had excellent sentence structure, not repetitive on words despite being a long book (unlike some other who have good stories but struggle with the English language), the narrator did well to add emotions to the characters voices and articulated clearly.

5/5

To the author and narrator. Please continue your good works as it Does bring enjoyment and contentment to many of your readers.

Signed: one who keeps freaking checking for another installment of This series.

No challenge

In theory the material could have been good but no matter how bad things were the main character is way too cheerful, he's got undeserved power, no real challenge or threat & the plot lacks twists & turns

it was a nice story all the way through until....

it was a very enjoyable story all the way through right until the very end. The end was kind of confusing and left no real conclusion in my mind and it seemed to be out of nowhere. I don't know the and left me confused and and disappointed. I don't know if the author plans on writing another book to follow it, but it did not leave me wanting to read more all because of the ending. if you take off the last chapter the book was incredibly good and I enjoyed it very much.

A recommendation and advice

This series is seven books long at this point so I will give both a review and some advice. Read this book it is fun, it is poignant, it is interesting. After that start the second novel. It follows in the same vein and is quite good. However, when you get to the final confrontation put the story down, make up your own ending and find a new series to enjoy. I literally bashed my head on a wall in frustration at the transition to book 3 and it gets worse at the end of the third book. Enjoy this novel just know when to walk away.

This is just so pointless.

Imagine for a moment that you are playing a CRPG. Also imagine that your character is infinitely powerful and absolutely irresistible to any hapless woman to fall into your path. Also imagine that your character stops constantly to whine about how hard it is being infinitely powerful, a masterful lover, and a hero/king/dark lord. Lastly, imagine that every fetch quest and kill x number of y monster quest in your average crpg IS the story.

I knew I was in trouble in the first three minutes of this recording. Sean Runette is a good voice actor, but his voice feels to old for this character. That is, I felt that way until I realized the main character is written like some weird anachronistic senior citizen from bygone decades.

The biggest sin this book commits, though, is the endless dithering of the godlike protagonist. Most of the book is just him complaining to the audience about everything. Meanwhile, the protagonist is the absolute worst case of self-insert I've ever seen. It is practically masturbatory at times.

If you are looking for vampire stories, Anne Rice novels, as problematic as they can be, at least are clear of the basic linguistic mistakes that riddle this book. If you are after fantasy, Brandon Sanderson is so much more talented a writer.

Avoid this and all the other novels in this series. Being an eternal optimist, I purchased books 2 and 3 hoping that, at minimum, the writing would improve or the story might go somewhere. Neither of those things is true. Give this one a pass.

Great read that's hard to put down!

This story goes at a great pace and while it has elements common to other books of the genre, Mr. Whited does a great job of weaving everything together in a very entertaining way. Mr. Runnette is a perfect voice for the main character and really brings out his quirky sense of humour.

I've recommended this book to all of my science fiction and fantasy-loving friends.
