A goddess awakens to a new world, only to find that some things never change.

Amidst the ashes of a failed rebellion in Seven Cities, new embers are flaring to life.

There are furrowed brows at the beleaguered Malazan Legion headquarters in G’danisban for it would appear that yet another bloody clash with the revived cult of the Apocalyptic is coming to a head.

Seeking to crush the uprising before it ignites the entire subcontinent, Fist Arenfall has only a few dozen squads of marines at his disposal, and many of those are already dispersed - endeavouring to stamp out multiple brush-fires of dissent. But his soldiers are exhausted, worn down by the grind of a simmering insurrection and the last thing Arenfall needs is the arrival of the new Adjunct, fresh from the capital and the Emperor's side.

The man's mission may be to lend support to Arenfall’s efforts . . . or stick a knife in his back. 'Twas ever thus, of course. That a popular commander should inevitably be seen as a threat to the Emperor - such is the fatal nature of imperial Malazan politics.

And what of the gods? Well, as recent history has proved, their solution to any mortal mess is to make it even messier. In other words, it's just another tumultuous day in the chequered history of the Malazan Empire.

Acclaim for The God is Not Willing:

'Awe-inspiring. Prepare to fall in love with epic fantasy all over again.' ANNA SMITH SPARK, author of The Court of Broken Knives

'As good as I expected it to be . . . Erikson continues to showcase his talents as an impressive wordsmith . . . mesmerising and memorable. Add to this intense battles, witty banter, advanced warfare, new curses, new gods, and escapades with warrens and this world's supernatural and you'll see why I had such a good time.' GRIMDARK magazine

'It is beautiful, it is captivating and utterly enthralling . . . Erikson is unparalleled in both the scope of his imagination and the talent of his prose, but more importantly, he is as insightful and funny as Terry Pratchett ever was.' FANTASY BOOK REVIEW

'Erikson at the top of his game, a lean, sharply honed and powerful addition to what is already in my mind the pre-eminent fantasy universe of the last few decades.' TOR.COM

'Determined, focused, well-paced and immensely rich novel of war, peace, hubris, consequence, sorcery and compassion . . . this is Erikson bringing his A-game, turned up to 11, and delivering what is comfortably one of his three or four best novels to date.' THE WERTZONE

'Could be Erikson's most accessible novel to date . . . a must for all Malazan fans.' FANTASY HOTLIST

'Erikson burnishes his reputation as a superior epic fantasy world-builder . . . a treat both for his returning readers and lovers of George R.R. Martin-style epic fantasy who have yet to discover his work.' PUBLISHERS WEEKLY *starred review

Similar to “The God is Not Willing”, this is a faster-paced version of what Erikson perfected in the main series. All of the things you love - the marines, the philosophy, the humour, the build up - are there, only in a more trim package.

Emma Gregory is my favourite narrator of all of the Malazan book, and continues an amazing job here

An amazing follow up

the Malazan books are my fave fantasy series of all time - i’ve listened to almost all the audiobooks. i love the characters, the places and am super attached to them. my only beef has been that when changing narrators, there’s no continuity with how they pronounce names of people, places. anyway, i’ve heard different narrators interpret the words in different ways. i love Emma Gregory’s voice acting and her narration skills are great. I also love that they chose a woman since in my opinion it gives a different flavour of expression. I was irritated by the way she pronounced things at first, but then researched a bit online only to find out she checked the pronunciation with the author. so cool. anyway, long life to Steven Erikson and the Malazan books!

LOVE

The plot in this Steven Erickson book isn't all that coherent. Yes, a resurgent uprising in Seven Cities links the events described taking place all around the city of G'Danisban, but the book really follows several plotlines involving an Imperial Fist, the reincarnated Sh'aik, Gods scheming in their hidden Warrens, and Malazan Marines/Squad Mages on duty keeping order + alternately battling cultists and Claw assassins. The end result is an experience in multiple aspects of what make Erickson/Esselmont's imaginative reality so engrossing.
I found the plot a little overinvolved, but Erickson's prose is as poetic as ever, his dialogue is strikingly gritty, and the book is loaded with tongue-in-cheek coarse/ribald humor (this second entry in the 'Witness' trilogy is a well-written, highly entertaining read).
I do, however, recommend getting a paper or eBook version and reading along with the narration for this one - the story is challenging to follow.

As to that, reader Emma Gregory's voice-acting performance doubtless contributes to my "read the text" recommendation. Her diction, timbre, cadence, and tone are outstanding.. but her accents are occasionally over-the-top (+/- near-unintelligible).

Altogether, 'No Life Forsaken' merits 8 stars out of 10. It's a fabulous immersion in multiple elements of the author's world - entertaining for any fan of the 'Book Of The Fallen'. Spend the Credit and enjoy.

[Note: Erickson's near-softcore discussions of sex in this book are striking. It's as though he's trying to capitalize on one of the presumed reasons for the popularity of 'Game Of Thrones'. Yes, "Sex Sells".. but I found it kind of nonsensical]

Gennabackis "Chronicles". Read-along Suggested

Steven Erikson will grab you by the back of your shirt and push you roughly through dark warrens where you will witness his world, decades in the making. I recommend this book, and all Malazan books.

Better and better.

This narrator reads like a feminist art history major whose career as a slam poet crashed and burned and they thought they’d give a shot at narrating epic fantasy.
So many beloved names and places burned into the heart through 20+ books and this chick figures she should change the pronunciation for absolutely no reason I can think of. It’s so disappointing and distracting from an amazing story in a phenomenal world.

10/10 Story and 1/10 narrator
