National Best Selle

An intimate and no-holds-barred memoir by Canada's top defence lawyer, Nothing But the Truth weaves Marie Henein's personal story with her strongly held views on society's most pressing issues, legal and otherwise.

With Nothing But the Truth, Marie Henein, arguably the most sought-after lawyer in the country, has written a memoir that is at once raw, beautiful, and altogether unforgettable. Her story, as an immigrant from a tightknit Egyptian-Lebanese family, demonstrates the value of strong role models - from her mother and grandmother, to her brilliant uncle Sami who died of AIDS. She learned the value of hard work, being true to herself and others, and unapologetically owning it all.

Marie Henein shares here her unvarnished view on the ethical and practical implications of being a criminal lawyer, and how the job is misunderstood and even demonized. Ironically, her most successful cases made her a "lightning rod" in some circles, confirming her belief that much of the public's understanding of the justice system is based on popular culture, and social media, and decidedly not the rule of law. As she turns 50 and struggles with the corrosive effect on women of becoming invisible, Marie doubles down on being even more highly visible and opinionated as she deconstructs, among other things, the otherness of the immigrant experience (Where are you really from?), the pros and cons of being a household name in this country, opening her own boutique law firm, and the likes of Martha Stewart and her commoditization of previously unpaid female labour. Nothing But the Truth is refreshingly unconstrained and surprising - a woman at the top of her game in a male-dominated world.

What the critics say

“An astonishingly well-crafted mix of observations, personal history, portrayals and self-scrutiny. . . . a finely rendered life story.”—Winnipeg Free Press

“It’s an articulate telling of the life of an immigrant to Canada, adjusting to the cultural differences, rising above adversity, and becoming a role model for Canadian women. It’s a feminist treatise.”—Boomer Broadcast

Must Read!

What an amazingly beautiful and empowering biography. It was not at all what I expected it to be, it was better. I highly recommend this book.

Great listen

I admire Marie Heinen, not because I want to be like her, but because I respect how she debates and defends the most fundamental and important principles of justice and fairness, even when such conversations are unpopular.
Her book to me is a great reminder of the importance of being in touch with oneself and her values.

Nothing but the Truth

I enjoyed the book so much that I listened to it twice.
It clearly explained how Canada’s justice system works.

Tremendous leadership, important story - very inspiring!

I’m glad Marie Heinen narrated this story herself - it was inspiring to get to know her. I’m moved by what she’s shared with us. Equally important is her perspective on the judiciary and the role of social media in diluting our collective capacity for critical thinking. This is an inspiring read from an important Canadian thought leader.

EXCELLENT READ

My first book through audible and one worth listening to. If you have an interest in her life and points of view, you will enjoy this. She is likely one of Canada's best defense lawyers.

Excellent, on many levels

A Canadian story about a family choosing this to be their country and the challenges that accompanied that, an insight into the legal system from someone who champions and respects it and takes the time to explain it the rest of us and the story of a strong woman who questions the double standards in our society and confronted them. Inspiring.

A book by a lawyer without a real “law story”.

I thought this book was fabulous. I enjoyed every minute of it. I am a lawyer myself so the legal part was a bit “old story” but the overall story arc was fabulous. I highly recommend this book.

Good listen - skip some chapters

The book is very well written and pleasantly read by the author. I really liked the beginning when she talks about the family's origin. Some parts I had to skip, like Polyester Xmas (meant to be funny but isn't) and towards the end, she gets a little too deep into her views of the justice system, for my taste. The "Sorry, Not Sorry" chapter, though, is one of the best in he book. This lawyer is an admirable character and if I am ever unfortunate enough to face the criminal justice system, I sure want her on my side.
