Story
Joe Pickett is the new game warden in Twelve Sleep, Wyoming, a town where nearly everyone hunts and the game warden—especially one like Joe who won't take bribes or look the other way—is far from popular. When he finds a local hunting outfitter dead, splayed out on the woodpile behind his state-owned home, he takes it personally. There had to be a reason that the outfitter, with whom he's had run-ins before, chose his backyard, his woodpile to die in.

Story
The investigation of LaShawn Tompkins's murder seemed straightforward enough. Upon his release from death row, the ex-drug-dealer returned to his old neighborhood where he was gunned down on his mother's doorstep. Just another case of turf warfare...at least that's what it looks like on the surface to Seattle investigator J. P. Beaumont, who's been handed the assignment under the strictest confidence.

Story
In the sleepy rural town of Painters Mill, Ohio, the Amish and "English" residents have lived side by side for two centuries. But 16 years ago, a series of brutal murders shattered the peaceful farming community. Kate Burkholder, a young Amish girl, survived the terror of the Slaughterhouse Killer but came away from its brutality with the realization that she no longer belonged with the Amish. Now, a wealth of experience later, Kate has been asked to return to Painters Mill as Chief of Police. She's certain she's come to terms with her past - until the first body is discovered in a snowy field.

Publisher's Summary
The newest thrilling Beaumont suspense novel from New York Times bestselling author J. A. Jance, in which Beaumont is approached by a visitor from the past and finds himself drawn into a missing person’s case where danger is lurking and family secrets are exposed.
Years ago, when he was a homicide detective with the Seattle PD, J. P. Beaumont’s partner, Sue Danielson, was murdered. Volatile and angry, Danielson’s ex-husband came after her in her home and, with nowhere else to turn, Jared, Sue’s teenage son, frantically called Beau for help. As Beau rushed to the scene, he urged Jared to grab his younger brother and flee the house. In the end, Beaumont’s plea and Jared’s quick action saved the two boys from their father’s murderous rage.
Now, almost twenty years later, Jared reappears in Beau’s life seeking his help once again—his younger brother Chris is missing. Still haunted by the events of that tragic night, Beau doesn’t hesitate to take on the case. Following a lead all the way to the wilds of wintertime Alaska, he encounters a tangled web of family secrets in which a killer with nothing to lose is waiting to take another life.

I couldn’t stop listening. I finished the book in two sittings. Great story. What a great way to finish off Sue Danielson’s story.

Narrator awful
I am in hell. What idiot hired this guy to be JP. He has an awful whiny, high-pitched voice. Never thought I would ever return a JAJance book but audible is getting this one back.

Narrator’s Voice
The narrator’s voice was so distractive- alternating between audible to a low tone which is indiscernible. Usually the end of his sentences is where it’s most noticeable. I enjoyed the author’s storyline, but would have preferred a different narrator.

Narrator is awful.
I'm buying the book so not be distracted by the bad narration.
Love JA Jance books. Have read all her series. i wait anxiously for her books but the narration of 'Nothing to Lose' is horrible. I went back thru JP Beaumont series in Audible listened to samples all were good, this one sounds like Mike Ortego
needs to spit.

Why can’t a decent reader be kept? Does she put it out to the lowest bidder every book?

Poor reader
The reader dropped his voice often, particularly at the end of the sentence. Either you have to turn up the sound to blasting for most of the book or miss crucial words.

New narrator?
The narrator leaves a lot to be desired. Not at all what I think Beau should sound like. The story was not one of the best but still worth listening to.

Don't Listen to Nay-Sayers - Excellent!
Loved this story and performance. I almost didn't buy after the negative performance ratings. I'm glad I ignored those negative remarks. :This is quintessential J A Jance JP Beaumont! The narrator was great - clear and emotive. I thought the pathos was especially well done. The story was attention grabbing and absorbing. I can't wait for the next book from J A Jance.

Bad Narration
The story is great, but the narrator has a tendency to drop the end of his sentences making it difficult to follow.
