Story
Ultra running defies conventional logic. Yet this most brutal and challenging sport is now one of the fastest growing in the world. But is it an antidote to modern life or a symptom of a modern illness? Adharanand Finn travelled to the heart of the sport to find out - and to see if could become an ultra runner himself. His journey took him from the deserts of Oman to the snow-capped peaks of the Rockies, and from a 24-hour track race in Tooting to his ultimate goal, the 105-mile Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc.

In 2017, world-class ultrarunner Hillary Allen was at the top of her sport - and it felt like she was running on top of the world as she competed in Norway's Tromsø Skyrace. Allen was nearly halfway through the 50-kilometer race when she fell 150 feet off an exposed ridge, fracturing her back and breaking multiple ribs, both feet, and both of her lower arms. Beginning with the dramatic story of her accident and rescue, Out and Back: A Runner's Story of Survival Against All Odds recounts Allen's fight to return to the life she loves.

There's no other book like this. Longtime running writer Scott Douglas marshals expert advice (including his own, cultivated from more than 100,000 miles of personal experience), and a growing body of scientific research to show how running can make us happier. How? Everyone knows that running builds stronger muscles and a healthier heart; science now shows it also helps develop a healthier brain. For those struggling with depression and anxiety, a consistent running routine can enhance the mental-health benefits of talk therapy, antidepressants, and cognitive behavioral therapy.

Story
Humans, unlike other animals that are drawn to water, are not natural-born swimmers. We must be taught. Our evolutionary ancestors learned for survival; now in the 21st century, we swim in freezing Arctic waters and piranha-infested rivers to test our limits. Swimming is an introspective and silent sport in a chaotic and noisy age; it’s therapeutic for both the mind and body; and it's an adventurous way to get from point A to point B. It's also one route to that elusive, ecstatic state of flow.

Publisher's Summary
Long before Cory Reese strapped on his first pair of running shoes, he learned the key to being a successful ultrarunner: He knew how to suffer.
In Nowhere Near First, Cory shares his deeply personal story about experiencing his father’s suicide at a young age, and how this led to a career in endurance running and a desire to live life to the fullest.
Nowhere Near First is a humorous, captivating, and uplifting account of Cory’s memorable ultramarathon experiences. Not only does Cory’s entertaining and powerful writing allows listeners a unique perspective into the challenges and rewards of running, but it also inspires each of us to turn tragedy into triumph.
“Cory Reese writes with humor, humbleness and honesty. His story is both uplifting and real, and his tales of persistence and perseverance are sure to inspire, whether you’re at the front of the pack or nowhere near first. Regardless of the title, this book’s a winner!” (Dean Karnazes, author of Ultramarathon Man: Confessions of an All-Night Runner)
“Cory Reese’s book, Nowhere Near First, is an immensely entertaining and profoundly educational story about overcoming challenges to forge a meaningful life. Reese’s story is must-read for people looking to find meaning and purpose in modern-day society.” (Karl Hoagland, publisher, UltraRunning Magazine)
“Cory has penned a very personal account of overcoming hardship in his personal and athletic life. Nowhere Near First tells his story of perseverance and survival in a vivid, down and dirty way that peaks with his extraordinarily positive way of looking at life.” (Marshall Ulrich, author of Running On Empty: An Ultramarathoner’s Story of Love, Loss, and a Record-Setting Run Across America)

Great book!
Really enjoyed this book. Great story and easy to listen to. It's always nice when the author reads their own book but in this instance I don't think the author did it justice (sorry Cory!). I just felt a professional narrator could have brought the stories out a bit more. But overall an enjoyable listen.

Beautifully captures the joy of running
I absolutely loved this book, along with his new book 'Into the Furnace'. If you think Ulta Marathoners are some high-level elite people, this book will change your mind. Cory tells us in his low key, everyman style how he began running recently in 2009 and how it has captured his life leading to marathons, ultra marathons and multi-day events. His joy and humility just burst from the pages - or the headphones if you listen to the audiobook as I did running the trails near our home. Although, as the title indicates, he is happy running at the middle or the back of the pack, given his remarkable abilities to run many 100 milers and beyond that he does, his athletic ability is definitely superlative!
Cory's personality comes through in his humble narration - he is a nice person who you'd be glad to meet - I think you'll like this book as much as I did.

HE WROTE THE BOOK!
It had good stories, but was so dry. I don't understand how the person reading their story sounded like he was reading it for the first time. No voice fluctuations or emphasis in any way.
The humor was geared towards middle aged housewife contemplating being bad and having a 3rd glass of wine.
I was expecting a little more from this book and found myself thinking of preciously read books on my long runs, rather than listening intently.

I’m nowhere near fast or first and just enjoy the experience. It’s encouraging to read a book from someone in the back of the pack too. Back of the pack runner.
totally worth my time and attention. I loved hearing from a regular guy doing regular running struggles in epic Ultra runs and getting them done. all too often we read or listen to the elites and all their accolades versus the stick-to-itiveness and Truth that comes from Cory. Love to meet him some day if I'm ever in Utah or maybe I'll bump into atta ultramarathon or rim to rim to rim. hey Corey what are you doing then September 2020?

Fun and motivating! I’m so glad I gave this a try!
I didn’t know what to expect with this book and I ended up really liking it!
At first I had to get past how the author reads out loud. I’ve been listening to so many professionally read books that I took their talent for granted!
Either way this Audiobook is still worth listening to. I liked his training stories and especially loved hearing about how he influenced his family to run and train with him too!
I’m signed up for my first 30k and 50k and my perspective has switched from “I can’t do this, what was I thinking “ to “just have fun and enjoy the process of training and running the trails”
Thanks Cory for writing this book!!!!

Not the best running book out there.
I love listening to people push themselves, their why, their story while on my runs while listening to their stories. I find them inspirational. This was a very hard listen though. From time-to-time my wife would be in the truck with me or catch snippets while I listened out loud. And after a couple of time she asked what on earth was I listening to, I felt a little embarrassed in a lighthearted way with the content she heard. I struggled to find specifically why this book (she always catches snippets of other books I’ve listened to) and I love to share their story, and she loves to dip in and out, but with this I couldn’t find anything truly inspiring about it. The lists he would reel off that he ate on a run mixed with his monotone voice had me questioning would my ears ever forgive me “a Twinkie…..a Mountain Dew……a slice of pizza…… cookies…….. a handful of cookies……. Another Twinkie…….diet Dr Pepper……..and so on. The only true benefit is that it’s only a little over 5 hours so I obviously finished it faster than my other running books. Ultimately, if you are looking to burn a credit on something before you freeze your audible account, sure give it a shot, but if your looking for a truly great book please use that credit on born to run, can’t hurt me, finding ultra, or other books.
