Publisher's Summary

Fan-favorite heroes Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers join forces on a deadly maritime case in the remarkable new novel from number-one New York Times best-selling author John Sandford.

An off-duty Coast Guardsman is fishing with his family when he calls in some suspicious behavior from a nearby boat. It's a snazzy craft, slick and outfitted with extra horsepower, and is zipping along until it slows to pick up a surfaced diver...a diver who was apparently alone, without his own boat, in the middle of the ocean. None of it makes sense unless there's something hinky going on, and his hunch is proved right when all three Guardsmen who come out to investigate are shot and killed.

They're federal officers killed on the job, which means the case is the FBI's turf. When the FBI's investigation stalls out, they call in Lucas Davenport. And when his case turns lethal, Davenport will need to bring in every asset he can claim, including a detective with a fundamentally criminal mind: Virgil Flowers.

best one yet!

I love Virgil and Lucas working together. Some good twists in this one. The chicken humor near the end made me laugh out loud... you'll understand when you get to it!

Excellent narration

Hello!? The reviewer who gave Richard Ferrone a thumbs down on this book is obviously behind the eight ball. Ferrone is THE voice of Lucas and all the recent Sanford “Prey” audible books. Love LOVE his subtle intonations and way of imparting dry humor. I can’t imagine another narrator doing the series. Keep up the fine work Richard.
As for the book itself, one of the best John Sanford novels. It’s edgy. It kept me guessing what was coming next. Many authors get formulaic after so many books in a series. They start cutting the books way down. They turn and churn them into serial stories (Are you listening Stuart Woods?) Sanford has managed to keep things sharp and fresh. Good for you John, keep it up. And keep Ferrone on the team.

For the love!!!!

I have been a Sanford fan since his first Prey book was published. I am only in the first hour of this book but am astonished that a skilled author would allow his books to be narrated by someone whose voice is so annoying as to totally detract from the story and the characters of whom I am so fond! I’m not sure I can finish the book!

Excellent story

I don't think there is a book from John Sandford that I have not enjoyed, and Richard Ferrone is the best narrator for his books. This is a great book and you won't be dissapointed by it.

Deep Dive

Best Sandford Prey story in years. Loved Davenport and Flowers working together, especially outside of Upper Midwest. Interesting criminal behavior. Ferrone’s reading engaging—once I started story, couldn’t put it aside. Looking forward to reading story in about a month, enjoying the pace again.

John Sandford Does Not Disappoint

Ocean Prey is what I expect from John Sandford, which is a great story, characters I have grown to know and love over the years, and a few twists here and there.
Richard Ferrone is a master of Sandford's characters. In the 1990s I preferred Eric Conger and Ferrone was an adjustment, but I have grown to appreciate his narration of these novels. I can get my Conger fix listening to Virgil's adventures.
The book is well-written. The narration is good. Another homerun by the master!

I always dread the approaching end of these books. This one in particular because it was a fantastic wonderful read wonderful performances. I wait all year for these books and I wasn’t disappointed. Virgil is the man And a perfect complement to Lucas. I’ve read every single one of these books. Can’t wait till next year.

😕

I'm a huge fan however, disappointed in Virgil's portrayal, didn't seem like him. Not very exciting over all.

Loved the postscript

Don’t make me come over there! I don’t think there are any musky lakes in ... was it Texas?
