This is an excellent help for those who struggle to explain to others why we hunt. Often non-hunters don't understand why we chose to hunt, and we don't always have the words to explain what we instinctively understand. This book can help put into words that understanding and maybe help someone answer the "Why" question. From an evolutionary perspective, physiological, psychological, social, and even environmental perspective. If you're a hunter, you'll see yourself mirrored on the pages, and in the voices of the authors.

The authors have an obvious passion for the subject, and it's clear that a lot of research went into this book. At certain points, the narrating author is near to being overcome by emotion. The "out-takes" at the end (and one or two inside the main book) provide a glimpse of the authors' personalities and flesh out some stories only briefly mentioned in the book.

The book has educated this not-yet-hunter on aspects of hunting that are poorly understood by non-hunters, such as the degree to which hunting funds conservation and supports the health of animal populations, and the fact that so-called "trophy hunters" do not waste the rest of the animal.

Having the different types of text - headings, summaries and stories; quotations; and the main text - read by different voices makes it very easy to follow the structure of the book despite the audio format.

the contents itself of the book is interesting subject matter, and over the course of its 12 plus hours of content covers everything from the more pedestrian and surface level of the subject matter, into the deeper cuts and more academic or challenging subject matter.

The problem here is in the performance. The book is read by the authors, which is at times a really good decision when a piece of literature would benefit from the intimacy that you can only get from the author. But in this case there is too much of a range of competency in narration. Some of the authors really chug through the words in a difficult fashion and none of them have a particular flair for speaking. To make matters worse their performances are recorded on what sounds like very suboptimal equipment. this makes the book, at times, fairly difficult to listen to just for how unpleasant it is.
They also made the decision to keep in some bloopers, and accompanying banter surrounding said bloopers. I am sure to some people this may be charming or something but when this is coupled with just having a generally low narration quality it feels less like a fun outtake and instead just feels amateurish and grating.

I really think this would have benefitted massively from poneying up a small budget to hire a professional narrator. Legitimately one of the worst narrated books I have ever listened to.

It's okay...It seems like this book is to convince the reader that hunters are the superior spices and the the rich and wealthy hunters will save the world.
