Publisher's Summary

Wilbur Smith has lived an incredible life of adventure, and now he shares the extraordinary true stories that have inspired his fiction.

From being attacked by lions to close encounters with deadly reef sharks, from getting lost in the African bush without water to crawling the precarious tunnels of gold mines, from marlin fishing with Lee Marvin to near death from crash-landing a Cessna airplane, from brutal school days to redemption through writing and falling in love, Wilbur Smith tells us the intimate stories of his life that have been the raw material for his fiction. Always candid, sometimes hilarious, and never less than thrillingly entertaining, On Leopard Rock is testament to a writer whose life is as rich and eventful as his novels are compellingly.

An endearing autobiography

I have not yet read any of Wilbur Smith’s books but had been close to folks who were big fans. I decided to listen to this since it was included in my audible membership and I am so glad I did. A candid and honest conversation with with listeners, tales from his childhood and dreams, hopes, opinions and perceptions shared honestly have given me much admiration for Wilbur Smith as a person and as an author. The narrator was wonderful and his accent does justice to the imagined voice of a man raised in Southern Africa while being easy to listen to for the entirety of the book.

A fascinating tale of inspiration

When The Lion Feeds was one of the first novels I ever read that pulled me deep into the world of the protagonist. Over the years, I have returned to read more from Wilbur Smith’s works, so I was delighted to see this autobiography.

The journey Wilbur takes us on winds through the years of his youth, then leads back and forth through the experiences that shaped the author’s mind. Experiences of adventure, love and heartache.

I recommend this book to all aspiring authors and Wilbur Smith fans. As for me, I think I’ll sink into the warmth of one of his novels next.
