Story
In Push Off from Here, McKowen delves deeply into each of her nine points: what they mean, how they work, and how every person can live them. She addresses topics such as the correlation between trauma and addiction, the importance of radical honesty, letting go of the illusion of control, the value of community, a reminder that healing is a continual process, and that the process is a gift. Whether you’re just starting out or have been sober for decades, McKowen instructs us to be kind to ourselves: Change is messy and progress is rarely linear, but we can always push off from here.

Story
On paper, Sarah Levy’s life was on track. She was 28, living in New York City, working a great job, and socializing every weekend. But Sarah had a secret: her relationship with alcohol was becoming toxic. And only she could save herself. Drinking Games explores the role alcohol has in our formative years, and what it means to opt out of a culture completely enmeshed in drinking. It’s an examination of what our short-term choices about alcohol do to our long-term selves and how they challenge our ability to be vulnerable enough to discover what we really want in life.

Story
From the creator of the blog Renegade Mothering, Janelle Hanchett's forthright, darkly funny, and ultimately empowering memoir chronicling her tumultuous journey from young motherhood to abysmal addiction and a recovery she never imagined possible. Pregnant at 21 by a man she'd known three months, Janelle Hanchett embraced motherhood with the determined optimism of the recklessly self-confident. After giving birth, she found herself bored, directionless, and seeking relief in wine, which she justified as sophisticated and going well with chicken.

Publisher's Summary
The true story of a wife and mother's descent into alcohol addiction. A harrowing and sometimes heartbreaking chronicle of habitual blackouts and unremembered nights, and her triumphant emergence into the light of recovery.
Before she stopped drinking for good, Kim was lying to herself and everyone she knew about her daily habit-sneaking morning sips of vodka behind her husband's back, emptying bottles of wine, hiding the evidence from her family, and convincing herself that nothing was wrong and everything was under control. Until she realized that it wasn't, and that her dishonesty could cost her everything she loved.
What would happen to her marriage if things continued in this way? And how could she be a mother to her young children if she remained trapped in this cycle of abuse?
Deciding she had to make a change, Kim threw herself into a new life of sobriety seven months into the Covid-19 pandemic. But only after severing the chains of bondage did she realize how much work there was still to do. Opening the doors to buried memories and past traumas was only the beginning. Throughout her journey to sobriety, Kim would come to terms with the secrets and lies told by her parents and loved ones, allowing her a clarity and freedom she never before thought possible.

Story was good, narrator ruined it.
This was a good story, I am sober 1 year, so there were a lot of things I could identify with. However the narrator was really bad. She sounded like a machine. I had already made the purchase so tried to listen to just the story and ignore the narrator, but it was more like listening to the story and tolerating the narrator. I have listened to a lot of audibles, and the narrator is key. I personally prefer the author read it, and think even if it was bad, it was the author so you could appreciate the effort.
So bad narrator aside, the story was a good one. It was a very honest and heartfelt story, and you can feel her pain and struggle. It was well written. I have read many of this kind of book throughout my first year of being sober, and found because I am long past raising my children that I couldn't relate to it quite as much, but for a young mother, it would be easy to relate to. I see those pressures for my daughter who is a young mom, and the gift of Mommy Juice.
Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.
